U.S. TO SELL GRAIN TO SOVIET BLOC:
At his news conference President Kennedy makes the announcement that the United States will sell surplus wheat to Russia and her satellites. The $310,000,000 purchase will be from U.S. surplus stocks and will help reduce the 1,000,000,000 tons in storage while at the same time benefit the U.S. balance-of-payments deficit.

HAITI AND CUBA SWEPT BY HURRICANE:
Reports remain meager from isolated sections of both Haiti and Cuba as the two island nations assess deaths and damage as Hurricane Flora swept over their countrysides. The death toll in Haiti is estimated at 4,000 and it is feared the Cuban toll will be as gruesome.

CONVICTS RIDE HIGH, WIDE AND HANDSOME:
Inmates of the Texas prison at Huntsville stage their annual rodeo that draws thousands of outsiders to the penitentiary. It's their day to shine and the convicts stage a thrilling show.

The Air Force Academy is toppled from the unbeaten ranks by an inspired SMU eleven. A blocked kick leads to an SMU field goal and a recovered fumble sends them on the way to the game's lone touchdown. The underdogs come out on top:

TOWNS WIPED OUT IN NIGHT OF HORROR:
In one of the most horrifying disasters of modern times a flood in Northern Italy takes 1,800 lives. A great wall of water was sent over the Vaiont Dam by a landslide that poured from Mt. Top. The wall of water roared down the valley of the River Piave and wiped out towns and hamlets. In the village of Longarone, for example, 80% of the inhabitants died in the cataclysm.

At Ann Arbor the largest crowd of the season, more than 100,000 see Michigan take on Michigan State. The underdog Michigan eleven starts rolling in the first quarter and takes the lead 7 to 0. Michigan State doesn’t get up to speed until the third quarter. Then the combination of Steve Juday and Sherman Lewis score and the game winds up in a tie - but a moral victory for underdog Michigan.

The Cleveland Browns meet the Giants in New York in a game that decides the first place pro standing in the Eastern Division of the NFL. The New Yorkers run into a Giant-killer: Jimmy Brown. He makes tissue-paper of the Giant line - there is no stopping the great man. He takes a screen pass for 72 yards and a touchdown then gives a brilliant example of broken field running as he scoots 32 yards for another score. Cleveland - Jimmy Brown 35, N.Y. Giants 24.

TITO VISIT: YUGOSLAV CHIEF WOOS THE U.S.
With a foot in both the Communist and Western camps, President Tito of Yugoslavia is welcomed to the White House by President Kennedy. This is an informal ten-day visit to the U.S. but the Marshall is given the Red carpet treatment.

NEW GERMAN LEADER ERHARD SUCCEEDS RETIRING ADENAUER:
Konrad Adenauer steps down as West German Chancellor after 14 years that saw the nation rise from ruins of World War Two to a position of incredible prosperity. He is succeeded by Ludwig Erhard who was Economics Minister – “architect of German recovery.”

NEWS BRIEFS: FIRST WORLD’S FAIR BUILDING OPENS
The initial structure at the 1964 New York World’s Fair to make its bow is the heliport~restaurant. It boasts a landing field for quick trips to the grounds and a sky-high restaurant that gives a sweeping view of the fair grounds.

“SUNSHINE BUS” TRANSPORTS KIDS WITH JOY
A custom-built coach for crippled children is presented to Mayor Wagner by Henry E. “Hi” Martin, Universal Pictures vice president. The movie company bought the bus and gave it to the Variety Clubs to donate to a rehabilitation center. It is specially equipped to care for crippled kids on their way to circuses, sports events and the like.

"IKE” CELEBRATES 73RD BIRTHDAY
The former President is guest of honor at a birthday dinner in Washington as Mr. Eisenhower marks his milestone. Barry Goldwater is present to put an end to rumor of a feud as Ike cuts a giant cake.

The Sooners of Oklahoma would have sooner stayed home after the Texas eleven began to rip them apart. The underdog team from the big state runs wild as they hog-tie their arch-rival,

LORD HOME NAMED:
A new Prime Minister takes up residence at No.: 10 Downing Street, after a power struggle that threatened to split Britain’s Conservative Party. Lord Hailsham, Minister of Science; R. A. Butler, Deputy Prime Minister under Harold MacMillan and Reginald Maudling, Chancellor of the Exchequer were all candidates for the job. However, Lord Home is named by Queen Elizabeth after she visits Mr. MacMillan in the hospital where he had undergone an operation. Lord Home and his party are facing a crucial election.

DROUGHT CRISIS:
Blazing sun beats down on parched earth from Maine to Texas as the nation suffers one of the worst droughts on record. Fires blaze in 21 States – fires by the hundreds ravaging woodlands that are tinder dry. Rainfall has been negligible for a month and since January precipitation has been only 54% of normal. New York City’s reservoirs are filled to only 1/3 of capacity – a predicament faced by every major city. The Croton System – a New York reserve – is so low that revolutionary farms are visible for the first time in decades.

WISCONSIN SNEAKS BY IOWA:
I-O-W-A spells “thrilling” today as the Buckeyes take on undefeated Wisconsin. The Iowa line proves a surprise as they hold Wisconsin and force them to settle for a field goal in the first quarter. Iowa takes the lead with a TD as the second half opens but Wisconsin comes back with a score and wind up on top – 10 to 7.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 32
OHIO STATE 3
The Southern California powerhouse sparked by Pete Beathard at quarterback, rolls over Ohio State to hand them their first defeat of the season. Ohio tries desperate aerials in the final quarter but an alert Southern California intercepts one to score anew.

OPERATION “BIG LIFT”:
The greatest military maneuver in history begins in the dark of a Texas night as the first members of the Second Armored Division go aboard transports for the long flight to German bases. Day and night the airlift continues until more than 15,000 men are winged to Europe where they pick up heavy tanks and armor for maneuvers. Operation Air Lift concludes without a hitch 63 hours later, 9 under schedule. The $20,000,000 experiment casts a long shadow into the future.

THE AIRBORNE SOLDIER TRAINS IN TAIWAN:
On the other side of the world the flexibility of the airborne soldier is demonstrated as thousands of ‘chutists take part in maneuvers on Taiwan. Both Chinese and American combat-ready men jump into the target area with a million pounds of equipment.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

A quarter of a century ago, history recorded 15 days of international crisis that forever shaped the destiny of man. There were riots in Sudetenland as pro-Hitler Germans backed his demand that this Czech territory and its people be returned to the Reich. As Munich, England and France allowed Hitler to take over – appeasement did not work. Less than a year later, war raged in Europe.

THE UNITED STATES IN EUROPE:
RUSK TELLS GERMANS “TROOPS WILL STAY”: Secretary of State Dean Rusk visits West Germany’s new Chancellor, Ludwig Erhard, in Bonn. After the success of “Operation Airlift”, the West Germans feared that the United States would withdraw some troops in Europe. Mr. Rusk gave assurances that this would not happen.

In Frankfort, Mr. Rusk joins in honoring George C. Marshall, father of the Marshall Plan, as a fountain is dedicated to his memory.

FLY AWAY WITH ME:
The trouble is – there’s only room for one in this jet turbine helicopter. It is transported to the fly-away spot in a 12-foot box-trailer and can be assembled and flown in five minutes. Its uses can be enumerated by the dozens.

NEVER MIND THE WEATHER – WANNA SKI??
The drought and long Indian Summer don’t stop skiers in Los Angeles who build a 165 foot slide in the Dodger Ball Park and have themselves a ball jumping on artificial snow.

The Pittsburgh Panthers stalk into Annapolis all primed to claw the Navy. But the Midshipmen prove themselves big game hunters. Sparked by Quarterback Roger Staubach, they riddle the Pitt defense and hold the undefeated team to 12 points as the Middies score 24.

DARTMOUTH 13
Harvard takes the measure of Dartmouth, undefeated in 15 games until they meet a fighting Crimson team that turns the Dartmouth Green, red. Interceptions and fumbles help John Harvard to a 17 to 13 victory.

GERMAN DISASTER: 43 TRAPPED IN FLOODED MINE:
The collapse of a reservoir on the lip of an iron mine at Broiatedt, poured tons of water down the shaft to trap 129 men working below. 86 escaped and immediate rescue efforts were put into action to rescue three men who were known to be alive. It’s a ‘round the clock operation as workers drill through 250 feet of rock to the men. Air pressure in the mine is higher from the flood waters and it’s a week-long effort to reach the climax of this drama of life and death.


SUB FIRES POLARIS FROM UNDERWATER:
The nuclear submarine “Andrew Jackson” makes a successful firing of the A-3 Polaris. From a position off Cape Canaveral the sub launches the mighty missile down the Atlantic Missile Range to unveil a new and mighty force in the defense of liberty.


FLY AWAY, FLY AWAY, WHIRLYBIRD:
The helicopter is assuming a bigger and bigger role in today’s aviation history and at Hurst, Texas, 39 are recruited into the Army in the largest single-day delivery of the “choppers” in history.


WHAT THE WELL DRESSED SHEEP WILL WEAR:
The Cumberland countryside in Northern Britain is a bleak and hazardous place for sheep when winter blizzards sweep in from the sea. What to do? This farmer has outfitted his flock with burlap overcoats and they don’t look a bit sheepish.

The nation’s Number One team, TEXAS, takes on Rice and avenges the tie game that Rice managed last year to knock Texas out of the top spot. Duke Carlisle, Tommy Ford and Tony Crosby spur the Longhorns to a performance that keeps them on top.

THE VIET NAM REVOLT:
The regime of South Viet Nam’s President Ngo Dinh Diem comes to an end in a wave of violence. Pictures made a few days before the revolt are the last ones made of a man who seemed to have no premonition of the horrible death he was to meet. Units of the Seventh Vietnamese Army slipped into Saigon quietly and within 18 hours, they succeeded in setting up a regime headed by Diem’s former Vice-President. The leader of the revolt, General Duong Van Minh, called for the Vietnamese to turn to the business at hand – the defeat of the Viet Cong Communists.

HONOR TWO UNIVERSAL STARS

At the Theatre Owners of America Convention in New York City, Cary Grant is awarded a trophy as “Star of the Year”. Milton Rackmil, President of Universal Pictures is on hand and also sees another of his movie players, Angie Dickinson, awarded the title of “Most Exciting New Star”. Both will be seen in forthcoming Features: Cary Grant in “CHARADE” and Miss Dickinson in “CAPTAIN NEWMAN, M.D.”

WASHINGTON UPSETS U.S.C. - 22 to 7:
Starting with a blocked punt that they grab for a touchdown, Washington’s Huskies go on to down favored Southern California, 22 to 7. Bill Douglas stars at quarterback for Washington, which can already sniff those blossoms in the Rose Bowl.

ARMY SHOOTS DOWN AIR FORCE: 14 to 7
The Air Force Academy takes on West Point in Chicago and almost pulls off an upset in the final quarter. They go out in front with only six minutes to play. However, Army bounces back with only 80 seconds to play. On fourth down, Kenny Waldrop bulls over and Army snatches victory from defeat, 14 to 10.

600 DIE IN JAPAN: MINE & RAILROAD TOLL SHOCKS NATION:
Within the space of seven hours, tragedy struck twice in Japan. First, a mine explosion on the southern island of Kyushu took at least 446 lives and another 348 miners were injured, many seriously. Then, 300 miles to the north, two commuter trains plowed into a derailed freight. In this accident, 162 people died, one American. The mine disaster is the second worst in Japanese history. The railroad accident is also one of their most horrible.


DOUGLAS-HOME WINS ELECTION:
Until he renounced his titles to become Prime Minister, he was better known as Lord Home, Britain’s Foreign Minister. He easily wins a by-election to the House of Commons and now, within the year, he must call a general election which the Laborites hope to win.


AH, BEAUTY, IS A GLOBAL AFFAIR:
They hold the “Miss World” Contest in Great Britain and it’s a girl from the Island of Jamaica who walks off with the honors. She’s just 20, and 5 Ft. 2 Inches – but Carole Joan Crawford proves that nice things come in small packages.

MICHIGAN STATE BLASTS PURDUE
The Spartans of Michigan State rout the Boilermakers of Purdue at Lafayette, Indiana – 23 to 0. Fumbles and an alert pass defense give the Spartans a victory, which puts them in first place in the Big Ten Conference.

TEXAS KEEPS ROLLING ALONG
The Number One Team in the nation, the Texas Longhorns, win their 8th straight game as they down Baylor – 7 to 0. Under Duke Carlisle, the Longhorns manage to break down the Baylor defenses in the third quarter to make the only TD of the day. Texas remains the only major undefeated college eleven in the nation – THE EYES OF THE OTHER TEAMS ARE UPON THEM.

CAMERA RECORDS MISSILE IN FLIGHT:
A Titan II ICBM takes off on a flight down the South Atlantic Missile Range and makes history. A motion picture camera is mounted on a second stage and on the fringes of space it records the separation of the first stage as the Titan speeds at 17,000 miles an hour. Through this magic, earthlings get a view of what astronauts will be seeing when the Gemini space vehicle is launched.

POPE INSTALLED AS BISHOP OF ROME:
Pope Paul VI is carried into the Basilica of St. John Lateran, seat of the Bishop of Rome, to formally take possession of the Church. As Pontiff, Pope Paul is also Bishop of Rome and he intends to make periodic visits to his flock.

MOVIE WRITERS DINED AT UNIVERSAL CITY

More than 200 motion picture writers and critics, including 80 from Europe, Asia and South America attend a luncheon at Universal City, a hub of the entertainment world. There are so many celebrities on hand that MC Edward Muhl has a hard time keeping track of them.


AH! CAN YOU HEAR THE PIPES??????
The White House is taken over by foreign troops but everybody loves it, including the President and Mrs. Kennedy. She has 1,700 under-privileged children as her guests on the White House lawn as the Black Watch pipers and band give a march-by. John, Jr., and Caroline are a hit of the show as they show off their good manners.

GEORGIA TECH TOPS FLORIDA STATE:
On their homegrounds at Atlanta, Georgia Tech falls behind the team that tied them in a surprise last year as Florida State scores first and holds the lead in the first quarter. Tech really doesn’t get started until the third session when Bill Lothridge takes to the air to complete 12 of 14 passes and Georgia Tech winds up on top – 15 to 7.
