POPE JOHN XXIII----A TRIBUTE
At no time in history did the lingering illness of a Pope cause such concern among peoples of all faiths as did that of Pope John XXIII. Protestant and Jew, Buddhist and Catholic – all prayed for the man who had become a symbol of interfaith cooperation and goodwill. Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli became a Cardinal in 1953 and a brilliant career as a Papal diplomat led him to the throne of St. Peter in 1958. He plunged energetically into the duties of office and became known as the “Pope of Peace” and noted for his calling an Ecumenical Council to work for Church reform and the Unity of all Faiths.

Valuable lessons were learned in the strike that was used 22 months later when D Day arrived.

JOHN XXIII
DEATH COMES TO THE POPE
The ordeal of Pope John XXIII is ended, the Pontiff is dead. His lingering illness brought thousands to pray outside his window… day and night they filled St. Peter’s Square and their prayers were exhoed around the world. FINAL HONORS FOR POPE JOHN
With all of the solemn homage that can be paid by mortal man a great figure is carried to rest. Tens of thousands jam St. Peter’s Square as the body of Pope John XXIII is borne from the Papal apartments to the great Basilica to lay in state. His face appears serene and peaceful, showing little of the ordeal that marked his last four days of life. Rarely in history has a man been so mourned by all races, by all sects. The tears and the murmured prayers are like the sound of a vast sea of emotion as the body is carried into the Basilica to rest on the main alter. A million people pass by the catafalque within two days. Here, in truth, passes greatness.

THE BIG DAY: 1,868 OFFICERS ARE GRADUATED:
The Air Force, Naval and Military Academies graduate their new officers.
AT the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, President Kennedy calls for the partnership of government and business in developing a supersonic passenger pland to hold the U.S. lead in commercial aviation.

Across the country at Annapolis the Navy Academy graduates receive their diplomas from Vice-President Lyndon Johnson who asks them to remember that America did not “strive for peace because we are weak, but rather because we are strong.”

Graduation day at West Point recalls the first dark weeks of World War II. Commissioned is Colin Kelly, III son of Uncle Sam’s first national hero who was killed in the sinking of a Japanese battleship. President Roosevelt requested whoever would be President when he grew up to appoint him to the Military Academy. In 1963 comes the sequel to a story begun in 1941.
