NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1963 (UE63071)

THE VIETNAM CRISIS:
Tanks manned by troops of the Special Forces ring Buddhists Temples in Vietnam as the crisis in that embattled Southeast Asian nation mounts to a climax. These troops, under the command of President Diem's brother have been mounting a campaign of terror against the Buddhists that has the United States taking a hard stand against the persecution.

COPS CAPTURE CROW:
Gilbert and Sullivan to the contrary - a policeman's lot IS a happy one… at least in West Berlin. President Kennedy's mother is the guest of honor as 100,000 see 5,000 cops put on a show that has everything - even a police dog soccer team!!

SURFING TAKES OVER IN EUROPE:
Surf-boarding has zoomed onto the European scene and in less than two years it has become the most popular seaside sport along the Basque Coast. At Biarritz they hold the first European championships with entrants from the United States mainland and Hawaii competing. There's one great advantage of surf-boarding at a famed resort -- it's but a step from a wet bathing suit to a dry martini.

YESTERDAY'S BIG STORY

September 1938 - the Eastern seaboard is lashed by a tropical hurricane. For two days the Coast, from New Jersey to New England felt its full fury. New York was whipped by 70-mile-an-hour winds and the raging sea poured millions of tons of water far inland. Three hundred million dollars was a conservative estimate of the damage. Six hundred people died in the storm.

ARKANSAS LASS NEW "MISS AMERICA":
There are beauty contests and beauty contests - then there is the "Miss America" competition. The glamour sweepstakes to pick the reigning beauty of them all. This is the 32nd year with a beauteous' bevy of breath-taking beauties. Miss Arkansas Donna--Axum - gets the nod and she'll reign as "Miss America - 1964".

PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND KING ZAHIR BRAVE RAIN:
There's a downpour in Washington, but that can't put the damper on an official reception. President Kennedy and King Mohammad Zahir of Afghanistan brave a I5-minute downpour as the distinguished visitor is welcomed on his arrival for a state visit.

"ROSIE" O'DONNELL IS HONORED:
It's a different story at the White House the next day. Someone must have gotten to the weather man. The sun is shining as General Emmett "Rosie" O'Donnell receives the Distinguished Service Medal for his wartime services in the Pacific. A record that would make Superman proud!

NICKLAUS WINS $50,000 GOLF PRIZE:
The young pro, Jack Nicklaus, wins a nip and tuck battle as four of the top professionals battle for $75,000 in prize money. He beats Julius Boros by one stroke as Arnold Palmer comes in third and Bob Charles, fourth…

LATIN AMERICA TOPS TENNIS WORLD:
It's Latin America's day of glory as Rafael Osuna of Mexico takes the U.S. Men's Singles and Maria Bueno of Brazil takes the U.S. Women's Crown. They both turn in sterling performances as each wins in straight sets.

VIET NAM CRISIS MOUNTS:
The war in Viet Nam has literally become a fight on two fronts. On one hand the government faces the Viet Cong Communists – on the other hand it faces a revolt of the Buddhist majority – a fight that has been joined by thousands of students. The capital, Saigon, is an armed camp as the regime of President Diem (which includes Madame Nhu and her husband who is head of the Secret police) seeks to maintain order while her troops fight Red guerillas. Universal cameramen go with government forces and United States "observers" as an attack is made on a Red band on
Mekong Delta. Eighty Communists are wiped out and the government loses 26 men.

UNITED STATES HONORS BOB HOPE FOR SERVICE TOURS:
The nation honors a man who has brought laughter to service men in the remotest corners of the globe. Bob Hope receives a special gold medal authorized by Congress. A singular honor for the GI’s perennial favorite who always leaves them laughing.

HOUSE OF HEROES:
A shrine to the memory of the GREATS of Professional Football is dedicated in Canton, Ohio, where the National- Football League was founded in 1920 to start the pro game on its road to glory. Present are George Halas, "Red" Grange and the famed Notre Dame "Four Horsemen". The Hall Of Fame is a touchdown for posterity.

FAMOUS FIVE --- FINE!
The most famous town in South Dakota is Aberdeen. It has a population of 25,000. The Fischer quintuplets are doing fine as they pass the critical 72-hour period. Now they are being fed a teaspoonful of milk every two hours oblivious, naturally, to all the commotion they have caused throughout the world. The chances are 1 in 54,000,000 that a birth will be five-fold and Mr. and Mrs. Fischer are still dazed from the event, it appears. Gifts have poured in and with a new house and magazine contract the future of the Fischer family seems assured.

U.N. ASSEMBLY OPENS:
The 18th session of the United Nations General Assembly opens on a note of optimism as representatives of 111 member nations meet to elect a new President for the coming year. The optimism is based on the nuclear test ban treaty and Dr. Carlos Sosa Rodriquez of Venezuela receives all of the votes cast and takes over as Assembly President.

END OF AN ERA:
The Polo Grounds, playing-field of hallowed memory, is about to give way to a housing development. Thus will end one of the most famous chapters in baseball history. The Mets play their last game here (yes, they lost to the Phillies 5 to 1) before moving to a spanking new stadium next year, now, except for a few football games this Fall crowds will no longer pour into the Polo Grounds. Casey Stengel, with his wife waves farewell to the Stadium. Only thing in baseball that
goes on forever is Old Marse Casey himself!

PRESIDENT KENNEDY ADDRESSES U.N.:
In a major address to the United Nations General Assembly, the President hails the pause in the Cold War, while taking note of Cuba and Berlin. Then he makes the startling proposal that the United States and the Soviet Union cooperate rather than compete and together try to put a Man on the Moon.

ROYALTY'S THREE R’s:
A quiet girls’ boarding school in Benenden, England receives two monarchs in one day: King Hussein of Jordan drives down from London to enter his 12-year-old sister, Basmah, in the school and no sooner has the curtseying for him ceased than Queen Elizabeth arrives with Princess Anne, the first daughter of a British monarch to attend school.

The day starts off poorly at College Park, Maryland for the University's eleven and continues to get worse as North Carolina state keeps making goal after goal while the Terrapins can scarcely make a first down. Final Score:

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DOWNS IOWA STATE:
Opening game of the season at California Memorial Stadium has a slow first half for the 31,000 packing the stands. But in the third period the home team comes to life, and with Craig Morton sparking the play, wins over Iowa State: 15-8.

ECUMENICAL COUNCIL REOPENS:
Carrying on the work of his predecessor, Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI reconvenes the Ecumenical Council with new appeals for unity among Christian faiths. Nearly 3,000 Cardinals, Bishops and other Church dignitaries are joined by 52 observer-delegates representing non-catholic faiths at the opening session. Along with a search for unity the Pope hopes to bring about reforms within the Church itself.

THE NATION GROWS:
If you've had the feeling lately that the country seems to be getting a little more crowded – you’re right! The tally-board at the Department of Commerce tells the story - the population of the U.S. has passed the 190,000,000 mark and is climbing… Every 11 seconds there's a new United States citizen.

ATOM TEST BAN:
The limited nuclear test ban treaty becomes official in the White House Treaty Room - the same room where the peace protocol was signed to end the Spanish-American War. In the presence of official witnesses and Congressional leaders, the President hails the agreement with Russia with a note of caution, calling it the first fruit of hope.

Michigan invades the Champaign home grounds of Illinois for a clash that's a cliff-hanger all the way. Northwestern goes out in front with a pass play and then misses the conversion attempt - and, that proves the BIG, BIG point of the day. Illinois gets a touchdown and the extra point and both teams make field goals. But that one kick meant the difference.
Final score: Illinois 10… NORTHWESTERN...9

BASEBALL
THE DODGERS!

The Dodgers take the Yankees in four straight games and while there may be no joy in New York – there’s bedlam in Los Angeles. In the third game Junior Gilliam is brought home by Tommy Davis for the only score of the game and Don Drysdale goes on to silence the mighty Yankee bats. In the final game Frank Howard homers to put the Dodgers ahead and Mickey Mantle comes back to tie it up with another four-bagger. Then, Gilliam reaches third on an error and is brought home with a sacrifice fly to center by Willy Davis. Then Sandy Koufax, hero of the first game, makes matchsticks out of the mighty Yankee bats. All Hail The Delirious Dodgers!
