U.S. STEPS UP ARMS FLIGHTS TO INDIA:
With reports filtering in from India’s northern border that Chinese Reds are again mobilizing, the neutralist nation is stepping up her airlift to remote outposts. C-130 cargo planes, loaned by the United States and flown by American pilots, are bringing food, weapons, fuel and other essentials to an air-strip over treacherous mountain trails to the defense posts.

FOCUS ON ROYALTY: PRINCESS GRACE AND RAINIER VISIT:
Prince Rainier III of Monoco arrives in New York with his daughter Caroline for a six-week visit. His Princess, the former Grace Kelly, arrives four hours later with the heir to the throne, Prince Albert. They left immediately for Philadelphia, Grace’s home town and while there will celebrate their 7th wedding anniversary.

GERMAN CIRCUS STAGES A THRILLER:
With the regularity of a Black Forest cuckoo clock, the famed Circus Krone raises its big top each spring, for a new season of bringing thrills and laughs to Europeans. The clowns have a field day… but the tops in thrills is mounted by three lions riding horses. They get the lion’s share of the applause, of course.

THE TACOMA BRIDGE COLLAPSE:
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, dedicated in 1940 was the pride of the Northwest. Then the third longest suspension span, it came to be known as Galloping Gertie as it swayed in the winds sweeping up Puget Sound. Four months after it was dedicated those winds sent the bridge into a rhythmic dance of death – it literally shook itself to pieces. These pictures of the bridge’s collapse have been acclaimed as some of the greates ever filmed. After World War II a new bridge was built – but Galloping Gertie will be long remembered.

FIRES RAVAGE EAST: 350 HOMES DESTROYED IN NEW YORK AREA:
Whipped by constantly changing winds, devastating fires raged from Main to Virginia in a week-end of holocaust. In Bayonne, N.J., five factories were destroyed; in Brooklyn firemen fought a fire in an oxygen plant. The worst fires, however, occurred on Staten Island, part of New York City, where it was a 24-hour battle before a hundred separate fires could be controlled. Half of New York’s fire equipment fought these blazes.

LIBERALS TAKE OVER IN CANADA:
The Liberal Party moves in to head the Canadian Government as the new Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson is sworn in and forms a new Cabinet. This ends the regime of John Diefenbaker.

BRITAIN LAUNCHES NEW ATOM SUB:
The nuclear submarine “Dreadnaught” is commissioned by the British. A hunter-killer type it will not carry the Polaris missile.

GENERAL DOUGLAS MacARHUR HONORED:
The 83-year-old General has a chair of history named for him at Columbia University in recognition of his contributions to his fellow-man.

SPORTS
DERBY TEST: 10 HOPEFULS VIE IN WOOD MEMORIAL:
“No Robbery” steals the show in the Wood Memorial, a prep race for the Kentucky Derby as he leads all the way. The odds-on favorite, “No Robbery” will probably have heavy backing in the Run for the Roses…….

KEY TO PEACE: KENNEDY SAYS LAOS MUST NOT FALL:
The Seventh Fleet stands by in the South China Sea as the situation in Laos moves toward a climax. The Red troops broke a truce without warning and the West is gravely concerned. President Kennedy dispatches Averell Harriman to Moscow and says at his news conference that Laso must not fall or the Communists will over-run all of Southeast Asia.

TWO NEW SUBS JOIN FLEET: The Polar-firing “Lafayette” joins the Navy after extensive sea trials and it is joined by the killer-sub “Jack”. These two new craft take their places in Uncle Sam’s sea defenses under the shadow of the “Thresher” tragedy.

ERHARD TO SUCCEED ADENAUER:
Dr. Ludwig Erhard, the “father” of West Germany’s postwar prosperity is named to succeed Dr. Konrad Adenauer as Chancellor when the 87-year-old leader steps down next fall.

UNEARTH MYSTERIOUS PERUVIAN CITY:
An ancient center of civilization is discovered high in the Andes. It has traces of Inca, Aztec and even Egyptian culture and scientists are probing the myster……

TINY TIGER TALE: IT’S FUN IT’S A BUNDLE LIKE THIS:
There’s a tiny bundle of love at the London Zoo who was abandoned by her mother and being brought up on a bottle. It’s three weeks old and thriving.

“THRESHER” SEARCH: DEEP-DIVING CRAFT ARRIVE FOR HUNT:
The Oceanographic Research Vessel “Atlantis II” returns to port after a fruitless search for the sunken submarine “THRESHER”. She made deep sea pictures but they revealed no trace of the craft. The “Trieste” a bathyscaph capable of diving seven miles deep arrives to help in the hunt. She can easily examine the “THRESHER” once it is located.

TORNADOES RIP THROUGH TEXAS:
Five tornadoes twist through North Texas and the damage toll mounts as they dig out. One hit Fr. Worth accompanied by 92-mile-an-hour wind and devastating hail. Damage in Fr. Worth alone is estimated at more than a million dollars.

NEW ANIMATED MAP IS PLANE SAFETY MEASURE:
With airport traffic constantly increasing on the world’s skyways the search is always on for new safety devices. This is a map in front of the pilot with a traveling pen that pin-points just where he is. A duplicate map is animated in the control towers.

NEW WEATHER SHIP FOR AIR SAFETY:
Still another aid to international air safety takes to the seas in the Netherlands. It is the “Cumulus” which will be stationed off Iceland to relay weather reports to airliners. Also in the Netherlands, the Dutch test the British Hovercraft. They are interested in its use in this low-lying country.

SPORTS
POLE VAULT RECORD AT PENN RELAYS:
The Penn Relays, 69th running, sees a soaring record in the Pole Vault as Brian Sternberg of the University of Washington clears the bar at 16 ft., 5 inches, a world record. The 440-yard relay is copped by Michigan State after they also win the 880-yard…….

DECATHLON RECORD
U.C.L.A. CHAMP SETS MARK IN 10 EVENTS
Chuan-Kwang Yang, a Senior in Physical Education at U.C.L.A. wipes out the old Decathlon record in a meet at Walnut, California. The events include the 1,500-meter run, the 100 and 400 meter dashes, high hurdles, pole vault, javelin, discus, high jump, shotput and broad jump. In chalking up 9,121 points, the amazing Yang won five events and added other points with fine performances in the other five.

CASTRO IN RUSSIA
ADMITS REGIME OWES ITS LIFE TO SOVIETS
Cuban Premier Fidel Castro arrive in Moscow via Murmanak and is greeted by Chairman Khrushchev. The Russians are still trying to placate Castro after the missile pullout of last Fall and they turn out a huge crowd to cheer him in Red Square.

YESTERDAY’S BIG STORY
The Battle of Britain began on August 8th, 1940 when the German air force tried to drive theEnglish to their knees with a rain of bombs. Within ten months more than 50,000 bombs fell on London alone, plus thousands of incendiaries. The British shook their fists in defiance, took all that the Nazis could dish ot, and, despite 30,000 casualties Londoners had the unquenchable spirit that triumphed over evil and sent Hitler to defeat.

ROCKEFELLER WED: VENEZUELAN TRIP FOLLOWS QUIET RITES:
New York’s Governor Nelson Rockefeller and his bride, the former Mrs. Margaretta Fitler Murphy leave for a honeymoon in Venezuala after a quiet wedding in Pocantico Hills, New York. Immediate speculation is rife on how the marriage will affect Mr. Rockefeller’s Presidential ambitions in 1964.

QUEEN JULIANA CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY:
The Queen of the Netherlands is serenaded by her subjects as she celebrates her 54th birthday with her husband, Prince Bernhard, and their four children. Flowers are deluged on the popular queen during the national holiday.

FREIGHTER BURNS ON BRITISH BEACH:
A Lebanese vessel catches fire as it enter the English Channel and is beached at Eastbourne. Firemen can do little but pour water in the hold after the Captain and crew are rescued.

DEAN RUSK MEETS WITH PRESIDENT TITO:
The Secretary of State stops over in Belgrade on the way home from Pakistan to meet with Tito. Relations between the United States and Yogoslavia have been strained of late and the meeting may lead to a renewed friendship….

HAITIAN CRISIS: AMERICANS LEAVE AS WAR THREATENS:
Port-Au-Prince, capital of Haiti, is a city seething under martial law as President Duvalier faces both insurrection and the threat of invasion from the Dominican Republic. Hundreds of Americans are evacuated after warning from the U.S. State Department. Meanwhile, underground forces are working against Haitian President Duvalier and threaten to topple the dictator.

NASSER VISITS BEN BELLA IN ALGERIA:
The Egyptian President arrives aboard ex-King Parouk’s former yacht for a five-day stay. On the first day, Algerian Premier Ben Bella made some hopeful statements about Algeria joining the United Arab Republic, but they were tempered later and observer see little chance of such an alliance in the immediate future.

CANADIANS TEST “HOVERCRAFT”:
A vehicle that may revolutionize travel and communications in Canada’s trackless wilderness undergoes tests on the St. Lawrence River. A land and water bus that travels on a cushion of air, the 27-ton Hovercraft is visualized for oil explorations as it will travel over snow, ice, rivers, lakes and muskeg…….

“THE SAGA OF DUNKIRD”: May 26, 1940 – the beaches at Dunkirk and the beginning of an eight-day saga that prevented the complete annihilation of the Allied Armies. With 900 small craft, the Allies evacuated 345,585 British and French troops who were trapped in a Nazi pincer movement after the collapse of Belgium. In the miracle of Dunkird these men were evacuated to Britain where they were to form the nucleus of invading force five years later.

POPE JOHN HONORED: PONTIFF RECEIVES PEACE PRIZE:
At St. Peter’s Basilica, a ceremony without precedent in Vatican circles. Pope John XXIII becomes the first Pontiff to receive a prize for peace – the Balzan Prize, worth $230,000. He immediately announced he would use the money to set up a foundation to work for international peace.

FILM FESTIVITIES ON TWO FRONTS:
In London, the British premiere of “TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD” has Princess Margaret in attendance, representing the Royal Family. She greets Gregory Peck who won an Oscar for his role in the movie. At Cannes, the International Film Festival opens with “THE BIRDDS”, Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller that if flying high around the world.

THE HANDICAPPED TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT:
President Kennedy honors the “Handicapped Man of the Year”, David Hall of Green Bay, Wisconsin, who devotes his time to traffic safety. At University of Washington, Jim Fortner shows his stuff with the freshman baseball team. He plays first base with verve and is good at bat. Jim was born legless.

PEARL HARBOR: Highlighs of that Day of Infamy! Captured Japanese films and the U.S. camera record of the attack on PEARL HARBOR, a sneak attack that plunged the United States into World War II. FROGMEN ATTACH FLOTATION GEAR TO THE “FAITH 7” AND THE MAJOR IS HAULED ABOARD, ENDING A 600,000 22-ORBIT, 34-HOUR FLIGHT IN SPACE. ELECTRICAL DIFFICULTIES DURING THE 19TH ORBIT FORCED COOPER TO TAKE OVER CONTROL OF THE CAPSULE DURING RE-ENTRY. WITH THE HELP OF COLONEL JOHN GLENN HE LANDED “FIGHT IN THE PICKLE BARRLE”, 7,000 YARDS FROM THE KEARSARGE.
