The College Bowl Games Of 1964
The 75th Tournament of Roses, with former President Dwight D. Eisenhower as Grand Marshal, is the curtain raiser to the College Bowl Games from Coast-to-Coast.

In the Rose Bowl, the University of Illinois meets University of Washington. The Huskies score first but a bruising Illinois team gets moving in the 2nd half. Mike Taliaferro (pronounced Toliver) pushes Illinois over in the 3rd quarter and they lead going into the final period. Then they mount an 85-yard march with the help of Player of the Day, Jim Grabowski and sew up the game.

Auburn 7
Nebraska goes into the Orange Bowl as the underdog but with the help of a 68-yard touchdown run by Dennis Claridge in the first minute and 13 seconds of play, the Cornhuskers take charge. Auburn scores once in the 3rd quarter but it’s too little too late.

Navy 6
University of Texas manages to contain Navy ace Roger Staubach at critical points as Duke Carlisle quarterbacks' the Longhorns to glory. He throws two touchdown passes to Phil Harris. One of the Carlisle pass plays is 58 yards and the other is 63 yards. Navy Ace, Staubach, completes 21 of 31 passes to no avail, though he does score the only Navy touchdown.

There’s a sweet football on tap at the Sugar Bowl in a game that becomes 'The Case of the Educated Toe'. Alabama’s Tim Davis, kicks four field goals to score all of Alabama’s 12 points. Again, this is a game where the losing team, Mississippi, manages to squeeze out a score in the final quarter to avoid a whitewash.

PRESIDENT ANTONIO SEGNI OF ITALY VISITS U.S.
President Antonio Segni of Italy is welcomed to the United States as he arrives on a State Visit. The Italian President emphasized in his statements that he was seeking closer ties between a unified Europe, including Great Britain, and the United States. After conferences with President Johnson at the White House he went to President Kennedy’s grave to honor the martyred leader.
SNOW REMOVAL FROM MIDWEST TO THE EASTERN SEABOARD BEGINS
From the Midwest to the Eastern Seaboard, the winter’s worst snow storm threw an icicle into the wheels of progress. As the near-blizzard blows out to sea the back breaking job of digging out is begun. Family cars are rescued, sidewalks and streets are cleared and once more traffic, trains and planes begin to move.
FORMER FIRST LADY JACQUELINE KENNEDY EXTENDS THANKS TO PUBLIC
In her first public statement since President Kennedy’s assassination, Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy thanks the hundreds of thousands who sent her expressions of sympathy. She promises to acknowledge each one no matter how long it takes.
WINTER FASHIONS MEAN ACTION APPAREL
When they hand out the Olympic Games Gold Medals, these fashions look like winners. Inspired by the official Olympic travel uniforms and parade blues, they dress up the slopes at Stratton Mountain in Vermont. In front of the fire later, Burlington manipulates the strings as the gals model action wear that makes everything about skiing so delightful.
SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP AT MAKAHA BEACH, HAWAII
Just what the doctor ordered for those of us who are being nipped by winter’s breezes. At Makaha Beach in Hawaii, it’s the world surfboard championships with Midget Farelly of Australia defending his title. Heavy seas push in 25-foot waves and when the commotion dies, it’s Joe Cabell who brings the title back to the U.S.

BOSTON SERVICES HONOR SLAIN PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY
The City of Boston honors its own. At the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, a solemn Pontifical Mass is celebrated in cherished memory of President John F. Kennedy. Richard Cardinal Cushing pays tribute to both the President’s widow and his mother for the strength they both showed during their ordeal.

TWO NEW PACTS RATIFIED BETWEEN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES
Prime Minister Lester Pearson of Canada and President Lyndon B. Johnson preside as two agreements are reached between the North American neighbors. First there will be a multi-million dollar power and flood control project in the Pacific Northwest. The other accord is to make an International Park at the summer home of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt on Campobello Island off the coast of New Brunswick.
QUEEN FREDERIKA OF GREECE VISITS THE U.S.
Queen Frederika of Greece arrives in the U.S., on a 17-day unofficial visit. She receives an honorary degree from Columbia University.
ATTORNEY GENERAL ROBERT KENNEDY ENDS MISSION TO INDONESIA
The Attorney General pauses in Korea on his trouble-shooting trip to end tensions among Indonesia, the Philippines and the new Malaysian federation. His efforts appear to be successful.
KING BAUDOUIN AND QUEEN FABIOLA OF BELGIUM VISIT JAPAN
It is a week for royal travelers. Emperor Hirohito and the Crown Prince join with their spouses in welcoming King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola of Belgium, to Japan for a state visit.
BALLOON RACE ENDS IN TRAGEDY NEAR CATALINA ISLAND, CALIFORNIA
A 42-year-old grandmother flies to her death in a balloon race from Catalina Island to the mainland. The hot-air craft are buffeted by high winds and only one entrant reaches the mainland. The body of Mrs. Barbara Keith is found miles off course – two days after the race.
EGYPTIAN TEMPLES SAVED FROM RISING WATER OF THE ASWAN DAM
An art treasure of the ages is being salvaged through modern engineering sciences. The temples of the Egyptian Pharaoh Rameses II are in the path of flood waters from the Aswan Dam on the Nile. In a $36,000,000 project, they will be saved into sections and reassembled 200 feet above their original site.

In the $100,000 Strub Stakes at Santa Anita, 13 horses go to the post and that’s an unlucky number for 'Lamb Chop'. The top filly of 1963 breaks her leg as 'Gun Row', the co-favorite equals the track record.

SATURN ROCKET IS A NASA SPACE TRIUMPH
The mighty Saturn Rocket, sixteen stories in height, is launched from Cape Kennedy and for the first time in the Space Race the United States has surpassed Russia. The rocket and payload total 19 tons and the 20,000 pounds that is put into orbit is, by far, the heaviest space vehicle ever launched successfully.
FIRST GRAIN SHIPMENT READY FOR RUSSIA
The first grain to be shipped to the Soviet Union under the $250,000,000 deal negotiated last Fall is loaded in Norfolk, VA. Russia has contracted to buy 148,000,000 bushels and her satellites more millions of bushels. Capitalist wheat for Communist dinner tables.
AUTO EXECUTIVE SEE HIS COMPANY'S HANDIWORK IN THE MOVIES
Chrysler executive, George J. Huebner, Jr. is welcomed to the set of the new Hollywood picture 'The Lively Set'. He accompanies a new star; the turbine-engine automobile that is featured in the picture along with actors Doug McClure, Marilyn Maxwell and others.

SPACE VEHICLE RANGER VI HITS TARGET BUT CAMERAS FAIL
Ranger VI leaves on a trip to the Moon. Like any good tourist, the space vehicle is equipped with cameras. Six of them; designed to send back 3,000 pictures of the lunar surface just before it crash-lands. The entire 230,000 mile trip is a success right to the end. The cameras fail to function as Ranger VI hits the Moon just a mile from target.
HOLLYWOOD FILM 'MAN'S FAVORITE SPORT?' HAS A FLORIDA PREMIERE
Hollywood starlet Paula Prentiss stops traffic in Miami as she leads a parade of beauty contestants. 'Miss Fort Lauderdale'; Beverly Sternberg, is chosen as 'Florida’s Favorite Girl' as the Rock Hudson and Paul Prentiss romantic comedy “Man's Favorite Sport?” has its world premiere.
RECORDS FALL AT INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA WINTER OLYMPICS
The eyes of 37 nations are on Innsbruck, Austria as their favorite sons and daughters vie for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

A Russian husband and wife team win the pair figure skating.

The Ski Races are highlighted by Egon Zimmerman’s victory in the downhill.

Great Britain wins her third Gold Medal in the history of Winter Olympics as the team of Bony Nash and Robin Nixon win by 12/100th of a second.

Christine and Marielle Boitschel, representing France, run one and two in the women’s Slalom. Jean Saubert wins Uncle Sam’s first medal – a Bronze – as she places third.
