WEST COAST RAINS TRIGGER AVALANCHE OF MUD
Torrential rains beating down on the hills of Southern California compound tragedy with every drop. Brush fires this summer stripped the hills of vegetation and there is nothing to hold the run-off of water. First a trickle, then a flood, followed by avalanches of mud in the wake of the water. One woman is swept to her death as scores of families flee their homes.
BRITISH AIRCRAFT CARRIER IS 'COMPUTERIZED'
The push-button warfare of the future is an established fact. The British carrier 'Eagle', refurbished at a cost of 100 million dollars is carrying a complex computer system that spots the enemy, figures position, range and bearing within seconds. The computer even keeps tabs on the amount of fuel in each plane and when an aircraft is running low, it is automatically recalled.
HOLLYWOOD STARS CONGRATULATE PRODUCER ROSS HUNTER ON HIS NEW CONTRACT
Universal Pictures has signed Producer Ross Hunter to a seven-year exclusive pact and film stars who have worked with him gather to do Mr. Hunter honor.

Bobby Darin, Sandra Dee, Hayley Mills and father, John Mills, Carl Reiner, Andy Williams and Maureen O’Hara. Also James Garner, Angie Dickenson and Rock Hudson, they all add their congratulations.

Producer Hunter will have $75 million budgeted for his coming productions. He hopes every one will be a blockbuster.
RACEHORSE 'KELSO' WINS THE INTERNATIONAL
IT’S KELSO AGAIN!!
The immortal Kelso finally wins the international, a race that has seen him invariably run second. Considered one of the greatest horses of all times, Kelso is the financial and sentimental favorite with the crowd at Laurel, Md., as he turns on the steam in the backstretch to make his famous run for home. The seven-year-old champion adds $90,000 to his earnings to bring his take-home pay; well, less taxes, to more than $1,800,000. Kelso is due to be retired this year.

U.S. ENDURES WORST DROUGHT IN A CENTURY
There is not a crop in most of the United States that has not been affected by one of the worst droughts in a century. From New England to the Plains States, everything has been killed, stunted or decimated by the prolonged dry spell.

Livestock suffers and well-diggers work around the clock to find new supplies deeper in the water shelf.

The New England States, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have had a shortage of rain for three years. This summer, however, is the worst in 34 years. In the Midwest it is the severest drought in a century.
GRAND DUKE JEAN BECOMES THE NEW LEADER FOR THE DUCHY OF LUXEMBOURG
A story-book country has a new leader. Grand Duchess Charlotte has stepped down from the throne of the Duchy of Luxembourg to be succeeded by her son who, at 43, becomes the Grand Duke Jean. He will be the titular head of 325,000 subjects in this nation that covers less than 1,000 square miles.

Michigan State 7
Undefeated Notre Dame, with 7 straight victories, takes on Michigan State at South Bend. The Irish are heading for their best season in 15 years and Quarterback John Huarte is one reason. He handles his team with precision, faking, running and passing. When footballs have stopped flying the Irish get a firmer grip as the Number One Team in the nation as they win 34 to 7.

MANICOUAGAN DAM ONE OF THE BIGGEST POWER PROJECTS EVER
Rising out of the forest wilderness of Quebec is one of the biggest power projects ever undertaken by man. Part of a multi-dam engineering feat that will harness 7,000,000 horsepower, Manicouagan Dam will be almost a mile long and back of it will be a man-made lake covering 800 square miles.
'SHIP OF THE FUTURE' ARRIVES IN NEW YORK FOR MAIDEN VOYAGE
Arriving in New York ready for her maiden voyage to Europe is a freighter that foreshadows the future on the high seas. 'The American Racer' is the nation’s newest ship and the most automated ever built. One man on deck can handle the engines, boilers and auxiliary equipment with push-buttons. It cuts the crew by 25%.
PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY CELEBRATE THEIR 30th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Thirty years ago a rising young politician and Claudia Alta Taylor were married in Texas. Today, that happy event is celebrated in the White House and the President and the First Lady recalls those days of whirlwind courtship and marriage.

Later, Mrs. Johnson helps inaugurate the annual Christmas Seal Drive which hopes to raise $27 million to fight all respiratory diseases.

At West Point’s Michie Stadium, the Pitt Panther roars as they claw the Cadets. The Army eleven, plagued by injuries this season, avoids a shutout late in the game as Carl Stichweh gets away a two-handed pass to Greg Steele that wipes out the goose egg.

Minnesota Vikings 14
The Baltimore fans, 60,000 strong, see the league-leading Baltimore Colts take on the Vikings. The Minnesota team is the only one that had handed Baltimore a loss this year, but the Colts go on to win this game in the last few minutes with a pass from Johnny Unitas that Alex Hawkins grabs as he tumbles into the end zone.

A NATION REMEMBERS PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY
The people of the United States pause in memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy on the first anniversary of his assassination. 40,000 people pass by his graveside in Arlington National Cemetary as Robert Kennedy leads the Kennedy family in prayer for the martyred leader. Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy remained in seclusion with her children during the day as her mother placed a simple bouquet on the grave in her name.

It was a time for self-assessment and reappraisal for the American people as they pondered the reasons and probed again for the reasons that made such a sad anniversary necessary.

Nations around the world joined with the United States in honoring the man who was growing even more in stature when his brilliant career as a statesman, writer and man of peace came to such a tragic end.
THE VERRAZANO NARROWS BRIDGE IN NEW YORK IS DEDICATED
A new beauty makes her debut in New York and she’s the Toast of the Town. The new Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is the first link between Staten Island and the New York mainland. The $350 million span brings to fulfillment a dream of many decades. Boasting the longest center span of any such structure, the mile-long bridge is crossed by 100,000 vehicles in the first day after dedication.

7,000 PERISH IN VIETNAM FLOOD
With thousands dead and 700,000 homeless, helicopters from the United States Carrier 'Princeton' rush food supplies to the stricken areas. Heavy rains and floods compounded the misery of the savage war in Vietnam and the drive against the Vietcong rebels was forgotten as all efforts turned to feeding the hungry natives.
FALL FASHIONS MEANS ONLY ONE THING - FUR!
Many things go on behind-the-scenes before Milady can luxuriate in a new fur coat. The fur auction is one, as high prices are bid for Great Lakes ranch mink. A little magic from the stylists and, presto! The result: it makes you feel warm all over.
GYMNASTS IN GERMANY WOW THE APPRECIATIVE AUDIENCES
Gymnastics and such acrobatics are not too popular in the U.S.A., but in countries like Germany exhibitions draw large crowds. At Ulm, they vie in balancing and pyramid-building contests, while at Hamburg, they limber up for the 1968 Olympics, only four years away.

Southern California’s Craig Fertig has a day that won’t readily 'pass' from mind as he bombards the University of California, Los Angeles, with touchdown passes. He throws three bombs that help Southern Cal stay in the Rose Bowl running.

BELGIAN PARATROOPERS RESCUE HOSTAGES HELD CAPTIVE BY REBELS
A dramatic camera document is recorded in the Congo as more than 500 Belgian paratroopers are flown into Stanleyville to rescue white hostages held by Congo rebels. As the troopers reach the town, machine guns are turned on the whites and 30 die minutes before rescue.

U.S. Airforce C-130 transports shuttle between Leopoldville and Stanleyville to fly out more than 1,000 foreigners. From various towns wrested from the rebels, 1,700 whites from 17 nations are freed from barbaric capture.
TV's 'MUNSTERS' ESCORT SANTA CLAUS TO NEW YORK CITY
That’s not a misspelling, TV’s way-out family, 'The Munster’s' help escort Santa Claus to New York to usher in the Christmas Season. They drive down Broadway in their $20,000 'Munstermobile' that groans on all six-cylinders, but gets only three miles to the ghoulin'.

The Kaydets come into Philadelphia looking for blood; Navy blood. The Midshipmen have come out on top in each of their last five meetings, but this year it’s a different story as the West Pointers down the boys from Annapolis, 11 to 8 in a game that was a thriller.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: USC UPSETS UNBEATEN NOTRE DAME
With nine straight victories under their belt, the Irish come roaring into Los Angeles, but leave with bowed and bloody heads. The U.S.C. eleven comes back in the second half to outplay Notre Dame to a farethewell and win the game with less than a minute and a half to play. They topple the Irish from their Number One ranking.

ALEX QUAISON-SACKEY OF GHANA IS ELECTED TO U.N. PRESIDENTIAL POSITION
Flags of 115 nations now fly at the United Nations as Malawi, Malta and Zambia become members with the opening of the 1964 Session of the General Assembly. A showdown between the United States and Russia on the Soviet debt of $52 million dollars is postponed as no voting will take place until after the holidays.

Alex Quaison-Sackey of Ghana is unanimously elected President of the Assembly for the coming year.
TINY VILLAGE IS CRUSHED AS TONS OF DIRT AND MUD SLOWLY ENGULF THE VILLAGE
Disaster is slowly descending on the tiny village of Landl in the Austrian Tyrol. The inhabitants say, 'the mountain is running away' as tons of dirt and mud slowly engulf the village of their ancestors.

Help has come from all over Europe. Heavy equipment is trying to move the River Ache back into its bed and many of the 600 evacuated inhabitants hope someday to return to the village.
JOHN HUARTE OF NOTRE DAME WINS HEISMAN TROPHY
The Irish quarterback, John Huarte is the winner of the Heisman Trophy, football’s most coveted honor. At the Downtown Athletic Club in New York he receives congratulations and newsreel films show him in action, the kind of action that helped him lead Notre Dame to one of its best seasons in recent years.

SMU 6
Texas Christian University and Southern Methodist wind up their season at Dallas in a wild and wooly game. TCU scores twice in the first half, but SMU holds them later as they score once themselves. Then Texas Christian takes three points for insurance with a field goal and winds up the winner 17 to 6.

POPE PAUL VI ARRIVES IN INDIA FOR HISTORIC VISIT
The teeming millions of India flock to Bombay to greet the 'burra guru', the great Holy Man, as Pope Paul VI arrives for the International Eucharistic Congress. No other Pope has ever visited this area of the world, and no other Pope has ever made of trip of such length. He is greeted by Prime Minister Shastri and other high dignitaries, and he donates $50,000 to India’s poor before presiding at the elevation of six Bishops. His return to Rome is equally a triumph.
JACK FROST HAS NATION IN ITS ICY GRIP
That perennial artist, Jack Frost, hadn’t been heard of around Niagara Falls and the East Coast for some time, but he blew into town to stage one of his more spectacular one-man shows. From Maine to Carolina they know that Indian Summer is over. These are days of sneezes and sniffles, anti freeze and fuel bills. Enjoy yourself!
WHITE HOUSE HONORS VIETNAM HERO WITH THE MEDAL OF HONOR
At the White House the nation’s highest decoration for gallantry first military hero of the hostilities in South Vietnam. Special Forces Captain Roger Donlon was on six months’ temporary duty at Nam Dong when, despite four wounds, he rallied his men to throw back a concerted Red attack.
PEARL HARBOR DEAD REMEBERED
There are simple and impressive ceremonies at Pearl Harbor to mark the 23rd anniversary of the 'Day of Infamy'. The battleship 'Arizona' is the tomb of 1,102 men and the flag is raised over the monument, for the 'Arizona' still remains in commission as a United States Navy vessel.

BRITON'S NEW PRIME MINISTER VISITS U.S.
Harold Wilson, Britain’s new Prime Minister, arrives for two days of talks with President Lyndon B. Johnson. Most important item on the agenda: future of the Atlantic Alliance and the allied nuclear defense.
SOVIET FOREIGN MINISTER ANDREI GROMYKO VISITS U.S.
A visitor from the other side of the Iron Curtain, Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko confers with the President and Secretary Of State Dean Rusk. Neither side seems to have offered any new initiative to reduce East-West tension.
CANADA JOINS IN WORLD WIDE COMMUNICATION NETWORK
A new ground station is being added to the world-wide communication network as an inflatable 'Radome' is erected near Halifax, Nova Scotia. Thus, Canada joins with the United States, Britain, France and Germany in monitoring the speeding communications satellites.
HIGH WIRE FAMILY IS NOW AT THREE GENERATIONS OF ARTISTS
Grandfather, son and two grandsons---three generations of the Winn family of California – are experts on the tight wire. Here’s how the boys train…they have been at home, aloft, since they were 3 years old. One is now four and the other six!
RODEO WORLD SERIES AT LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
A huge crowd turns out for the Rodeo World Series at Los Angeles as cowpokes have their championship set-to with the bucking horses and wild Brahma steers. The cowboys and animals like to go around together, but not for long.

It’s a foggy, foggy day in New York town, but it’s a blacker day for the New York Giants. Ending their worst season in 29 years, the pro footballers take a drubbing from Cleveland who wraps up the Eastern Conference Title, 52 to 20. Played under lights, though it’s mid-afternoon, the game doesn’t even come to an end as the fans rush on the field before the last touchdown is scored.
