ELECTION UPSET IN NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY
A heavy snowfall in New Hampshire as the people go to the polls in the Republican Presidential Primary is an omen of things to come. The hope of Barry Goldwater and Nelson Rockefeller are snowed under by a winning write-in vote for Henry Cabot Lodge. The winning candidate, who polled 35% of the vote was half-way around the world, in South Vietnam as Ambassador from the United States.
FLOOD WATERS IN THE MID WEST
From Missouri to Pennsylvania, river towns have been inundated by the rising water of the Ohio and its tributaries plus other rampaging rivers. More than 100,000 people have been affected by the flood.

In Cincinnati, for example, the crest of the Ohio reached 66 feet, that’s 14 feet above flood stage! Several governors have appealed to have many sections declared disaster areas.
TRIBUTE PAID TO BRITISH ACTRESS DAME EDITH EVANS
An impressive array of celebrities gather in New York to honor Dame Edith Evans. Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Sybil Burton are among the Britons on hand to honor their English countrywoman. She receives a very secret token from Ross Hunter for her outstanding work in his production of the film version of 'The Chalk Garden'.
BRITISH SALVATION ARMY FORMS MUSIC GROUP - WATCH OUT BEATLES!
The British Salvation Army has taken a leaf from the Beatles’ music sheets and formed 'The Joystrings' in a modern-day effort to bring religion to the people. From street corners, they have moved to a night club engagement and soon they will go on tour. Gone are the tambourines and trombones.

PRESIDENT CHARLES DE GAULLE OF FRANCE VISITS MEXICO
Mexico City gives French President Charles De Gaulle the most tumultuous welcome ever given a visiting Chief of State since the late President John F. Kennedy’s arrival here two years ago. President De Gaulle is in Mexico as part of his program to advance French prestige in Latin America. The warm reception he receives augurs great promise.
GALE FORCE WINDS FUEL BRUSH FIRES ACROSS WEST COAST
Wicked winds, 70 to 100 miles an hour sweep unseasonal brush fires into the Glendale and Burbank suburbs of Los Angeles. Forty fire companies with the most modern equipment are rushed to the scene. Efforts are almost futile to halt the relentlessly advancing flames. Twenty homes are completely destroyed. Others are badly damaged. 11,600 acres burned. Fortunately, there was no loss of life.
AMAZING 'AVENUE OF SPHINXES' UNEARTHED IN EGYPT
A two mile Avenue of Sphinxes connecting the ancient Egyptian temples of Karnak and Luxor is being unearthed in one of the greatest mass excavations of recent years. 700 Sphinxes – spaced 15 feet apart, are expected to be surfaced when the centuries of dust and debris have been removed.
NEW YORK GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING FINALS
Highlights from the 38th Golfen Gloves Championship Finals in New York. The 175-pound title goes to Don Waldhelm after a hard fought match against James Joiner. The 126-pounders throw more leather per minute per pound than any other class. Undefeated Pete Spanakos takes the crown.

U.S. AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN EDWIN O. REISCHAUER ATTACKED AND STABBED
Japan apologizes for an attack on the United States Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer who was wounded by a young Japanese who scaled the wall of the Embassy compound in Tokyo. The Ambassador suffered a deep wound in the thigh. He is recovering. His assailant, mentally deranged, said he wanted to dramatize the plight of near-sighted people.
FIRST LADY LADY BIRD JOHNSON TOURS SPACE CENTER
The First Lady returns to Alabama, scene of her childhood. Things have changed. For instance, the Huntsville Space Center was not there then.

A new starter this year at the INDIANAPOLIS “500” on Memorial Day. For the first time, there will be no home TV. It will be broadcast on closed circuit to selected theatres and auditoriums.

ARMY REBELLION IN BRAZIL OUSTS LEFETIST PRESIDENT JOAO GOULART
Joao Goulart flees Brazil as he is ousted as President by an army rebellion. It was Loulart’s leftist leanings and the fear that he would turn Brazil into a Castro-style state which led to his downfall.

He began his regime as a middle-of-the-roader but runaway inflation and worker discontent led him to institute land reforms and legalize the Communist Party.

WASHINGTON PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE PASSING OF GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
\America’s final salute to it’s greatest military hero. President Lyndon B. Johnson leads his countrymen in tribute to General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. His body lies in state, sans his 55 decorations of honor, in the rotunda of the Capitol where many thousands file by throughout the night.
RAILROAD STRIKE AT ILLINOIS CENTRAL
A surprise strike against the Illinois Central Railroad brings to a climax the management-labor controversy that has been simmering for nearly five years. The railroads put new work rules into effect and the Unions threatened a strike. President Lyndon B. Johnson’s persuasive powers halted the strike for at least 15 days, having called both sides of the dispute to the White House for a meeting.

FINAL RITES FOR GENERAL OF THE ARMY DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
Six days of national honors and mourning are climaxed at Norfolk, Virginia, as the body of General Douglas MacArthur is borne to Saint Paul’s Church for services. Many prominent persons are present for the final rites. President Lyndon B. Johnson is represented by Attorney General Robert Kennedy. From the Church, the body is taken to the MacArthur Memorial for internment.

Douglas MacArthur is gone but his courage and gallantry will live forever, in the hearts of all Americans.
HOLLYWOOD STARLETS GIVE A FASHION PARADE
All the glamour of Hollywood is on display at Universal City as a parade of stars model $100,000 worth of gowns by 35 of the world’s outstanding designers. It is a display that honors Universal’s new movie 'The Chalk Garden'. The new Hollywood Museum is beneficiary.
GOLFER ARNOLD PALMER TAKES HIS FOURTH MASTER GOLF TITLE
The 30th Annual Masters sees Arnold Palmer turn in a four-round score of 12 strokes under par to win an unprecedented fourth Master’s title. It’s his first tourney victory in six months. The old 'young master' seems on his way to rule the pro circuit once more.
PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON PRESIDES OVER THE START OF THE BASEBALL SEASON
In Washington, it’s proven again that despite the spring equinox, the season never really arrives until the President of the United States throws out the first ball at the opening game of the season. Mr. Johnson plays his role well. As usual, the Washington Senators go down to defeat as Los Angeles wins 4 to 0.
