NEW RECORDS SET AT THE WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES
As the Ninth Winter Olympic Games draw to a close, the crowds are treated to thrill-packed events. In the super-dangerous toboggan singles, the Germans run one, two in the women’s division and one, two, three in the men’s.

A highlight of the Games – at least for United States fans – is the performance of Terry McDermott, an apprentice barber from Bay City, Michigan. The speedy youngster pulls a major upset as he wins a Gold Medal by unseating the fabulous Russian, Yevgeny Grishin, in the 500-meter speed skating event.
ARMY BEGINS TESTING NEW JET POWERED HELICOPTER
Reporting for Army duty at Los Angeles, is a new jet-powered, lightweight helicopter that weighs a little over 1,000 pounds. It can carry a pilot and five fully-equipped troops.
A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT WAY TO SURF
San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge looks down on strange goings-on. This is a new kind of surfboarding. You get up to speed behind a towboat and then you ride the wave.

B-25 BOMBER CRASHES INTO NEW YORK'S EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
On July 18, 1945 New York Citywas shrouded in a smothering blanket of fog when scores of people heard a low-flying plane heading South. Then, an explosion! A B-25 Mitchell Bomber had crashed into the side of the Empire State Building at the 79th Floor. The crew of three and ten other people died as the plane hit with such force that parts of it passed through the building and across the street.

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME VISITS U.S.
The British Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, confers in Washington with President Lyndon B. Johnson on problems that beset the two countries. High on the agenda are Southeast Asia, Arms Control, Berlin and, above all, Britain’s trade with Cuba. Later, Sir Alec visits the Lincoln Memorial and pays tribute to another martyred President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
PRINCESS IRENE OF THE NETHERLAND TO MARRY PRINCE CARLOS HUGO OF SPAIN
Princess Irene of the Netherlands and Prince Carlos Hugo of Spain prove that love conquers all; including international politics! After days of intrigue and behind-the-throne maneuvering, the Royal lovers arrive in The Hague and it is announced that the couple will marry soon. Protestant Princess Irene converted to Catholicism and forfeits her rights to the Dutch throne when she marries Prince Carlos.
SURPRISE FINALE AT THE WESTMINISTER DOG SHOW
The Westminister Dog Show, the World Series of Dogdom, sees a surprise finale as the Best In Show goes to a Whippet breed, 'Courtenay Fleetfoot' of Pennyworth. Before he wins, however, he has to down the cream of the crop in all the six major categories.
WINTER OLYMPICS END WITH A THRILLING SKI JUMP
The Ninth Winter Games come to a thrilling end with the 90-meter ski jump that has an all Scandinavian touch. Two Norwegians and a high-flyer from Finland put on sterling performances as Toralf Engan of Norway takes the Gold Medal and the games are ended for another four years.

CUBA CUTS OFF WATER SUPPLY TO THE U.S. MILITARY BASE AT GUANTANAMO
Once more the U.S. military base Guantanamo is under strong pressure from Dictator Fidel Castro as he cuts off its water supply. Water is on short rations as the United States prepares to install de-salting plants to convert seawater, meanwhile is supplied with water shipments from Norfolk, Virginia. Service families are being rotated home as the Navy plans to cut back on Cuban employees to drastically reduce the $6,000,000 payroll that goes into the Cuban economy.
A MAGIC FLYING CARPET HAILS THE PREMIERE OF A NEW HOLLYWOOD FILM
There’s a flavor of the mysterious East in Texas as a Magic Carpet floats through the streets. It’s really mounted on an air car, but use your imagination! The Harem beauties that test-fly it are real enough. All this takes place at the World Premiere of 'The Brass Bottle'.
ITALIAN FASHION SHOW FOR EASTER AND BEYOND
The Forum of ancient Rome is as ageless as a beautiful woman. What better background for a showing of Italian fashions for Easter and beyond. In the race for milady’s attention between Paris and Rome, it seems to be a dead heat again this year.
ULTRA LIGHT DORNIER DO-32 HELICOPTER SHOWS ITS STUFF AT ELGIN AIR FORCE BASE
A 12-foot crate is all that is needed to transport this tiny helicopter to the scene of action. At Elgin Air Force Base in Florida, the Dornier DO-32 is readied for flight within five minutes and the shipping crate acts as the launching pad. Easily maneuverable, the half-pint can land on a dime – and have change for gas.

Daring rescuers save crewmen from the storm-wracked British freighter 'Ambassador]. Helpless in mountainous North Atlantic seas, the merchantmen’s plight sets off a grim drama of men against winds that reach gale force and waves rising 25 to 40 feet!
U.S. COMMANDANT ANSWERS DICTATOR FIDEL CASTRO'S CHARGES
Rear Admiral John D. Bulkeley, Commandant of the Guantanamo Naval Base, has an emphatic answer to Castro’s charges that the U.S. is stealing water from Cuban sources. With informal ceremonies, the World War II PT Boat hero has the two water lines into the base cut, declaring he did it because, “Castro is calling me a liar.”
DEFENSE STRATEGY IN THE JACK RUBY MURDER TRIAL OVERRULED BY JUDGE
The defense in the Jack Ruby murder trial pulls a maneuver designed to disqualify most Texas jurors. They subpoena a juror as a witness, saying that anyone who saw Ruby allegedly murder Lee Harvey Oswald on television witnessed the deed and they would challenge all of them. To a roar of protest from the defense, the judge overrules the stratagem of the defense and jury selection continues.
ITALIAN SET SKI FLYING MARK
Nilo Zandanel of Italy breaks the Ski Flying record at Oberatdorf, Germany, with a tremendous leap of 472 feet, 6 inches. Ski Flying differs from Ski Jumping in that 'form' doesn’t count, only distance. Zandanel makes his record leap in a trial jump and is forced to settle for third place in the meet’s final standing.

PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON MEETS WITH PRESIDENT ADOLFO LOPEZ MATEOS OF MEXICO
A capacity crowd at the Charter Day anniversary celebration of the University of California at Los Angeles see President Lyndon B. Johnson and President Adolfo Lopez Mateos of Mexico receive honorary Doctorates of Law. The President is meeting for two days with the Mexican chief to discuss mutual problems and inter-nation cooperation. Mr. Johnson receives a warm welcome on this first visit to the West Coast as President.
SAN FRANCISCO CHINATOWN RESIDENTS USHER IN THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON
More than 300,000 people manage to squeeze into San Francisco’s Chinatown to greet the New Year of 4,662. Parade officials who publicized the event to such extent didn’t know whether to be sad or glad; the crowds caused a monumental traffic jam.
GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING
The annual famous fist-fest, the Golden Gloves sees the Heavyweight sub-novices mix it up. There are things like 27-second first round knockouts. Two Irishmen pitted against one another and other thrills.
RACEHORSE 'MONGO' WINS AGAIN
The five-year-old turf horse of 1963 continues its winning ways – this time in the mud. 'Mongo' goes to the post a favorite in the Windener Handicap and doesn’t disappoint his backers as he comes sloshing home by a head.

PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON REVEALS SECRET JET INTERCEPTOR TO PUBLIC
One of the best-kept secrets in military history is unveiled by President Lyndon B. Johnson at his first general news conference since taking office just 100 days ago. He makes the startling announcement that the United States has developed a high-altitude jet interceptor that puts the famed U-2 Spyplane in the category of a limping commuter train.
ONLY DAYS LEFT BEFORE THE OPENING OF THE NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR
Everyone is counting the days until the opening of the great New York World's Fair. An exposition symbolized by the Unisphere. While most of us are counting the days, workmen are counting the hours, for many buildings are yet to be completed. However, officials are confident that everything will be in readiness when the gates are finally flung open to the public
CHILD MOVIE STAR HAYLE MILLS IMMORTALIZED AT GRAUMAN'S CHINESE THEATRE
For the first time in 30 years, a child movie star is immortalized at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, a Hollywood landmark. The teenager honored is Hayley Mills, daughter of British actor John Mills, who has scored her latest hit in the film version of 'The Chalk Garden'. Now her hand and footprints are in the sidewalk in front of the famous theatre.
SPRING TRAINING UNDERWAY FOR BASEBALL SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
Forget the cold ‘n snow. Baseball’s opening day is on the way; Spring training is under way and the San Francisco Giants training camp in Arizona presents a typical picture. Alvin Dark has Willie Mays and the rest of his boys getting in shape; eagle-eyeing the big day.

UNITED NATIONS VOTE TO SEND FORCES TO CYPRUS
In a rare example of complete accord, the United Nations Security Council votes U.N. General Secretary U Thant the power to form a peace keeping force on the Island of Cyprus and to appoint a mediator. Probably as many as 10,000 men will be sent to the Island that has been torn by strife between Greeks and Turks since late last year.
PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON ATTENDS RITES FOR MAYOR OF NEW YORK'S WIFE
Dignitaries and the humble pay a last tribute to Mrs. Robert Wagner, wife of Mayor Warner of New York. She died after a long illness. The President and Cardinal Spellman lead the mourners at the funeral.
TEST PILOT SAFELY LANDS B-52 BOMBER AFTER LOSING TAIL
A near-tragedy is averted as heroic Test Pilot Charles Fisher nurses along a crippled B-52 Bomber to a successful landing after the vertical stabilizer was torn off. The data he had collected in the five hours he kept the plane aloft before landing will prove invaluable in the study of many mysterious plane crashes.
BASEBALL LOS ANGELES DODGERS BEGIN SPRING TRAINING
The Los Angeles Dodgers begin spring training as they prepare to drive for another World Championship. The men who took the Yankees in four games last fall, are being conditioned for the season by an optimistic manager, Walt Alston.
TWO YOUNG RASCALS FLOOR PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON AND COMEDIAN BOB HOPE
Both President Lyndon B. Johnson and actor comedian Bob Hope get upstaged by a couple of young comics; and they love it! Donnie and Ronnie Cooper, age 6, are the Easter Seal Twins this year and they open the annual drive for Crippled Kids by doing headstands in the President’s office.

KING CONSTANTINE TAKES UP THE KINGLY REINS IN GREECE
The man who restored the Greek Monarchy to a position of respect is dead. King Paul I, who had reigned since 1947, has been succeeded by his son Constantine, at age 23, the youngest reigning monarch. Highlights from King Paul’s life show his many varied activities and King Constantine takes his oath as his successor.
SCHOOL CHILDREN GIVE THUMBS UP TO ANIMAL CENTER
One of the most unusual Biological Centers in the world is achieving wide fame. Located near Quebec City, it is a favorite with school children who get to be intimate with aquatic mammals and fish. The favorites, of course, are the seals; especially at feeding time.
EARLY THAWS AND HEAVY RAINS RAISE HAVOC IN VERMONT
Early thaws and heavy rains cause wide spread damage in Vermont, as many rivers become ice choked and overflow, carrying the huge cakes into city streets, crushing bridges and damaging hundreds of automobiles.
NEW YORK'S ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW MEAN SPRING IS IN THE AIR

UCLA ENDS SEASON UNDEFEATED IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL
The University of California in Los Angeles winds up the season undefeated in basketball. They take the measure of USC to make it 26 straight – the first team to go through the regular season undefeated since North Carolina did it in 1957.
