REDS WOO CASTRO - CUBA:
U.S.S.R. Deputy Premier Mikoyan visits Cuba, to officially open a Soviet Fair, as part of a broad-scale program to win the good-will of Castro and Cuba. Castro tours the Fair with Mikoyan, who despite isolated hostile demonstrations, seems to have made significant progress.

HAWAII VOLCANO RAZES VILLAGE:
From the Puna volcano fielsds, the worst eruption in a month of flame and thunder. A river of fire overflows natural barrier, and pours down a slope through the village of Kapoho, bringing desturction on a mile-wide front.

CARNIVAL PREPARATIONS:
The aritsans of Viarregio work overtime to complete preparations for the 1960 edition of the traditionally gargantuan, gala pre-Lenten celebration. Monster papier-mache puppets and animated caricatures get the finishing touches.

WOMAN WALKING CHAMP:

A British lady doctor completes an epic hike from the norhernmost tip of Scotland to Land's End in Wales, 1,028-miles in 23-days. A boost for the equality of the sexes, and the superiority of her natural health food diet.

PYGMY HIPPO NEWS TO ZOO:
Totota, a rare male pygmy hippo, takes up quarters in the Washington Zoo - good news for zoo officials and the few lady pygmy hippos in this country. Totota's the first male on the scene in five years!

EGYPTIAN YOUTH FESTIVAL:
In Cairo, President Nasser watches a national youth festival, featuring exhibitions of judo, military drill, and parachute jumping by teen-age boys and girls.

WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB SHOW:
In New York City, the opening of the Annual Westminster Kennel Club Show, bringing together over 2,500 of the elite of dogdom in eight-five categories, from the exotic such as the Saluki, to battalions of beagles and poodles and such. All seeking the most coveted honors of the dog-show world.

IKE VISITS CAPE CANAVERAL:
As controversy over America's defense status mounts, Ike pays his first visit to the Missile test center at Cape Canaveral, a personal inspection by the Commander-in-Chief of the nation's mightiest defense "hardware".

WORLD BOBSLED CHAMPIONSHIPS:
At Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, Eugenio Monti pilots his four-man bob sled down the winding, treacherous course to outspeed entries from a dozen nations and brings Italy its first team title in thirty years.

WESTMINSTER DOG SHOW FINALS:
At Madison Square Garden, the creme de la creme of dogdom are chosen in the finals of the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club dog show. Champion of champions, a British import, Pekinese Champion Chik T'Sun Caversham, best in show!

GOLDEN GLOVES SEMI-FINALS:
At sunnyside Gardens on Long Island, the Golden Gloves semi-finals, with 135-pounder Vince Shomo showing style and power in his bout, and heavyweight Jimmy Howard winning on sheer blasting power.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:

Victims of the depression, destitute miners at Uniontown, Pennsylvania, make their homes in idle coke ovens. Hopes of an upswing in the economy spur a new series of Baby Bonds; F.D.R. buys the first from Postmaster-General Farley. Louisiana's Kingfish Huey Long lashes out at critics. Wiley Post readies his plane for a stratosphere ascent. And speedster Sir Malcolm Campbell sets a new mark on the sands at Daytona Beach in his Bluebird, wearing the huge cat's tires to the fabric!

SAHARA A-BLAST
Deep in the Sahara Desert, France explodes her first atomic bomb, despite objections from the Afro-Asian nations, and the disapproval of both the United States and Russia. A fireball with the destructive power of the Hiroshima A-bomb signals the French claim to membership in the "nuclear club" of nations.

MR. K. INDIA:
Nikita Khrushchev visits India, at the start of another barnstorming tour of the Orient. In New Delhi, a quarter of a million line the Soviet leader's route from the airport.

CARDINAL STEPINAC FUNERAL:
Thousands of Yugoslavs fill Zagreb Cathedral for the last rites of Cardinal Stepinac, in his lifetime a symbol of steadfastness against Red oppression of the Church.

"OSCAR DAY" PROCLAIMED:
In New York, Mayor Wagner proclaims April 4th, date of the Academy Award ceremonies, as Academy Award Motion Picture Day in New York City. Artist Avram Winfield, meanwhile is honored for his 1960 competition-winning Academy Award poster.

LARGEST BLIMP WRECKED:
At Weymouth, Massachusetts, the world's largest blimp is wrecked when a gust of wind causes the huge gas bag to brush against the huge housing in which it is being berthed.

SQUAW VALLEY READY:
Squaw Valley, California, presents a gleaming face of snow and glorious winter terrain in readiness for the 1960 Winter Olympics. Scenes of the spectacular fourteen million dollar plant specially built to provide a dream setting for the classic event.

RACK AND FIELD UPSET:
At the N.Y.A.C. games in New York, miler Jim Beatty comes from obscurity to win a photo-finish upset victory over America's number one miler, Dyrol Burleson, the upset of the season. Hayes Jones wins an historic double in the sixty yard hurdles and spring events.

IKE BLASTS "DESPICABLE" SLURS:
At his White House Press Conference, President Eisenhower comments on the current and bitter defense debate. Ike denounces personal criticism of his intentions as "despicable".

NEW "NO-NEEDLE" VACCINE TESTED:
In Dade County, Florida, a mass test of a new polio vaccine begins. Half a million will receive shots of the new protective, taken by mouth instead of by needle. Since its cherry-flavored, the kids are eager participants.

FALL-OUT SHELTERS:
In Georgia and Maryland, the Government displays new fall-out shelters, designed to be built by the handy-man. Plans and details are available free in a Civil Defense pamphlet. A blue print for survival in the age of nuclear peril.

PENGUIN ISLAND:
On the shore of Argentina's Santa Cruz province, over 40,000 penguins move in for the Southern Hemisphere summer, raising broods of downy, comical chicks, and splashing and cavorting in the water en masse - just like Coney Island.

SPORTS:

NEW YORK GOLDEN GLOVES: Highlights of the New York City Golden Gloves finals. Vince Shomo wins his fourth title with a quick kayo. 147-pounder Pete Toro is another winner, completing a six year climb up the comeback trail.

MOTORCYCLE SKIING: In Czechoslovakia, the newest and zaniest of sports. Skiiers towed by motorcycles on a flat slick course, at breakneck speeds and pandemonium waiting at every turn. All concerned survive, and a hair raising good time is had by all.

OLYMPICS OPEN:
An hour long cermony filled with color and pageantry marks the opening of the 1960 Olympics at Squaw Valley, California. Against a background of superb natural beauty, Vice-President Nixon formally declares open the 11-day international competition.

BRITAIN HAILS NEW PRINCE:
Britain and the Commonwealth resound to artillery salutes signalling the awaited birth of Queen Elizabeth's third child - her second son, and the first infant born to a reigning sovereign in 103-years. Nation-wide celebrations hail the new addition to the Royal Family.

QUAIL BAFFLES RADAR:
The Air Force reveals films of a new addition to the Strategic Air Command, a 10-foot plane, robot controlled, which far-ranging B-52 jet bombers will carry deep into enemy territory. "The Quail" robot will travel in a different direction, but produce a similar radar "Blip" to baffle enemy radarmen.

MASS FOR CARDINAL STEPINAC:
In St. Peter's Basilica, Pope John XXIII delivers the eulogy at a solemn funeral Mass for Cardinal Stepinac who died last week in Yugoslavia, after years in which he became a living symbol of steadfastness against religious oppression.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:

War clouds loom over Ethiopia as Mussolini's BLACK SHIRT legions embark for Africa.

PRIMA CARNERA trains hard in a come-back campaign for ring greatness.

SLEET STORMS isolate Duluth from the outside world. Cutting transportation and all communications.

BASEBALL SPRING TRAINING, the St. Louis Cardinals, with Dizzy and Daffy Dean, aim to win another Series crown.

THE GIANTS look to the pitching greatness of Carl Hubbell. The Detroit Tigers boast Schoolboy Rowe. But the Spring training star 25-years ago is with the Braves - in the twilight of his career, but a diamond immortal - Babe Ruth!

IKE'S HEMISPHERE TOUR:
President Eisenhower carries his historic peace crusade into Latin-America, arriving in the modernistic Capital city of Brazil, Brasilia, still under construction, to be greeted by President Kubitschek, and receive the acclaim of thousands in the strange wilderness city. Despite occasional mishaps, Ike's 3-day visit to South America's largest nation is a resounding, popular triumph.

JAPAN HAILS IMPERIAL PRINCE:
All Japan rejoices as news is flashed of the birth of a son, second in the direct line of Imperial succession, to Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko.

FORMOSA PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN:
In Formosa, the over 1,400-man National Assembly debates the choice of successor to President Chiang Kai Shek, and weighs suspending the constitutional bar to Chiang's succeeding himself again.

VIAREGGIO CARNIVAL:
Viareggio's traditional Carnival parade in its 1960 edition is more grand, garish, gargantuan, and gala than ever, with enormous and witty animated lampoons of topical figures, including the "big four" looming over the merry-making that whirls through the streets.

DESIGN AWARDS:
The New York Couture Group, composed of America's leading high fashion designers, presents members' collections for Spring, in an important first showing, and also honors examples of stylistic excellence outside the field of apparel.

CAROL HEISS BRINGS U.S. FIRST OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL:
At Squaw Valley, California, 20-year-old Carol Heiss of Queens, New York, gives a superb performance in the figure skating event, triumphing with a wide margin to bring America its first Gold Medal in the 1960 International Contest.

EARTHQUAKE SMASHES AGADIR: The Moroccan port and tourist center of Agadir is shattered by two earthquakes coming within an hour. A calamity that destroys 80% of the city, and takes a fearful toll - some 5,000 bodies recovered, and an estimated 5,000 more still buried in the ruins when health authorities order rescue work stopped.

IKE RELAXES ON WAY HOME: On his return to Washington from South America, Ike stops over in Puerto Rico for a four day interlude of golfing and relaxation in the sun.

MUNITIONS BLAST IN HAVANA: A thunderous explosion rips Havana harbor, taking some 100 lives and injuring hundreds more. The blast of the French munitions ship is immediately blamed by Castro on American sabotage, and as Cuba mourns her dead, a new diplomatic crisis flares angrily.

"IDEA CAR" ON THE ROAD: On a Detroit proving ground, a glimpse of the XNR "Idea Car", a new departure in styling and radical design that may foreshadow things to come on our highways in the years ahead.

FIRST JAPANESE CARDINAL: In Tokyo, scenes of Archbishop Peter Tatsuo Doi, the first Japanese ever to become a Prince of the Church. He's one of 7 new Cardinals named by Pope John XXIII, including the first Black and the first Filipino.

FLOWER SHOW OPENS: The International Flower Show opens in the New York Coliseum, its theme "Flowers Around The World . Half a million blossoms and 37 major gardens contribute to a beauteous Spring pageant.

INTERNATIONAL ICE CROWN: In Vancouver, B.C., the International Figure Skating Championships, 21-year-old Alain Glletti brings the men's crown to France for the first time in history with a dazzling performance. The flawless grace of Carol Heiss again wins the crown for the defending queen.

GOTHAM HAILS CAROL HEISS
New York City hails a favorite daughter, Carol Heiss. Olympic Day is proclaimed, and the pretty winner of
the Olympic and the World's Women's Figure Skating Championships receives the traditional ticker tape parade along the path of heroes to City Hall.

KING INSPECTS 'QUAKE SITE
King Mohammed of Morocco inspects the nearly completely destroyed city of Agadir, where 10 days after the disastrous earthquake, 13 near-miraculous escapes from death amid the rubble are found.

"SNOW QUEEN" FESTIVAL
At Grossinger!s, New York, a world press premiere of U-I's forthcoming release "THE SNOW QUEEN" is the highlight of a winter festival week-end, attended by notables of both the world of entertainment and of winter sports.

GERMAN FASHION PARADE
In Hamburg, styles for Spring, ranging from a smart collection of bright and cheery umbrella and raincoat ensembles to a stunning set of truly elegant formal gowns.

BOWLING CONGRESS OPENS:
In., Toledo, Ohio, the mammoth American Bowling Congress opens, 11 weeks of hammering the hickories, with Joe Bowler turning out en masse. Over 30,000 keglers will take part, from nearly 12 hundred cities.

GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association presents its Annual Golden Globe Awards, based on votes of foreign correspondents, and of millions of foreign film fans. A gala, star-studded event, with the top awards of all, as World's Favorite Actor and Actress going to ROCK HUDSON and DORIS DAY.
