NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1960 (UE60021)

SPACE PIONEER:
The Pioneer V space laboratory, launched by a Thor-Able rocket, soars Sunward at an initial speed of 25,000 miles-an-hour. Its radio, powered by solar cells, broadcasts data from deep space farther and longer than any other cosmic probe ever.

CRASH IN SPANISH SIERRA:
Spanish and U.S. rescue teams reach a crashed Navy transport atop an 8,000 foot peak in the Sierra Nevada range, to bring out all aboard alive, after 2 days in which blizzards force rescuers to take shelter with the rescued in the wrecked fuselage.

JAPAN'S ROYAL BABY:
First scenes of Japan's royal baby Prince Hiro as with his mother, the commoner Princess Michiko, he leaves the hospital. The entire nation cheers and eagerly watches every step in his upbringing as marking further progress in the new tradition of Democracy.

COLOMBIAN ART SHOW;
In Miami, an exhibition of Colombian art spans 3500 years, revealing a rich and ancient culture far pre-dating Christopher Columbus in our South American neighbor, and showing a vigorous modern school of art as well,

TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS:
In Washington, D.C., the National Table Tennis championships. In doubles and singles matches, flashing action and a blazing pace, as the favored New York champions are upset and the crowns pass to new heads.

FIGURE SKATING CHIMP-IONSHIP:
In Switzerland, Davos the Chimp cuts some stylish capers on the ice, skating with a skill and artistry many people would be happy to match. Davos pirouettes, somersaults, and carves many a fancy figure in a hilarious and near-incredible performance. No monkey business about it!

CARIBBEAN WAR GAMES TEST HEMISPHERE DEFENSE:
Two massive shows of military power test hemisphere defenses and add fuel to the current defense debate. In Exercise Big Slam, the largest peace-time military air-lift pours troops into Puerto Rico on a round-the-clock schedule for two weeks. In Operation Banyan Tree, units from Latin American nations join Caribbean Command forces in war games that include large-scale para-drops.

FLOODS SWAMP SUNSHINE STATE:
From Cape Canaveral to Tampa, Central Florida is swamped by more than four days of torrential rains that send swollen rivers pouring over their banks, and burst one flood-control dam outside Tampa.

SUPER-LINER LAUNCHED:
Norther Ireland shipyards launch the Canberra, largest built in Great Britain since the Queen Elizabeth in 1938. The super-modern luxury liner, carrying 2,250 passengers will cruise from Britain to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

NATIONAL GYMNASTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS:
At Penn State University, top college gymnasts turn in a brilliant series of routines in each gruelling event, and Penn State, the defending champ, retains the title, thanks to the individual star, Jay Werner, who scores in 8 events.

ROTARY ICE CARNIVAL:
In Toronto, the famous Rotary Ice Carnival presents top amateur skating stars for charity. Russia's top twosome, Olympian runners-up, and other national and world champions contribute to a dazzling review.

BUCK-EYES TOPPLE BEARS FOR HOOP HONORS: In San Francisco, the N.C.A.A. basketball championships, with Ohio State's underdog Buckeyes taking charge from the outset to topple the defending champions, California's Golden Bears, in a fast paced action packed game.

WORLD LEADERS ON THE MOVE:
In Tokyo, West German Chancellor Adenauer compares notes with Premier Kishi on common problems of post-war reconstruction; travels to the Imperial Palace for an audience with the Emperor and Empress; and inspects Japan's booming industrial and cultural centers.

In France, Nikita Khrushchev makes a pilgrimage to the apartment where Lenin lived in exile before the Russian Revolution. He begins his six day swing through the provinces in Bordeaux where he is guest of the Mayor.

GRAND NATIONAL WON BY FAVORITE, MERRYMAN II:
More than 100,000 crowd the stands at Aintree for the 121st Grand National. A field of 26 line up for the greatest test of riders and jumpers in the world - a gruelling event that results in the death of one horse and injuries to eight jockeys. Merryman II finishes 15 lengths ahead of the 7 other survivors.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The coming of Spring ushered in the TORNADO SEASON. One twister, still remembered for its shattering fury, ravaged Metropolis, Illinois with whirlwind speed. On the 20th Anniversary of the opening of UNIVERSAL CITY STUDIOS, a host of old-timers lined up to congratulate movie pioneer, Carl Laemmle. GADGETEERS were very active a quarter of a century back, although not very successful. A combination revolver and movie camera; a fire alarm box with cunning automatic manacles for the unwary;, and a nifty idea for sailboats intended to make sails obsolete were a few inventions that bit the dust. A new salt water record was set by GAR WOOD with his Miss America Tenth.

WEATHER-EYE SATELLITE IN ORBIT:
"TIROS", the first weather satellite, is placed in orbit from Cape Canaveral. Its cameras record and broadcast back the first systematic viev of the earth's weather over continent-wide ranges, marking a gigantic stride for the science of weather study. Remarkable animation films graphically depict how TIROS performs its historic mission.

FRENCH TEST SECOND A-BOMB:
On the Sahara, France tests her second A-Bomb, and shows enormous technical strides thanks to the lessons learned from her first. The fiery mushroom cloud marks another stride by France towards equality in the "nuclear club".

POPE ELEVATES NEW CARDINALS:
In solemn rites in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope John XXIII completes the elevation to the red hat of the new Cardinals who swell the ranks of the Sacred College to its greatest number in modern times. Among them are the first Japanese and the first native African Cardinal.

CULINARY ART TEMPTS CALORIE COUNTERS:
In Toronto, 12,000 delegates to a national restaurant convention see a tempting, tantalizing array of culinary wizardry that would send a waist-line watcher into a tantrum of frustration. Working in goodies such as lobster, ham and pure candy sugar, the sorcerers of the kitchen recreate even the Taj Mahal.

BALLY ACHE WINS FLORIDA DERBY: Bally Ache moves into top contender's position for the Kentucky Derby with a thrilling victory at Gulfstream in the $120,000 Florida Derby, edging Venetian Way by a nose after a sensational mile and a quarter duel.

BRITAIN'S ROYAL RECEPTION FOR De GAULLE:
President De Gaulle of France is greeted by Britain with a rousing enthusiasm that recalls the solidarity of World War Two. After a ride with Queen Elizabeth from the station through crowd-filled streets, that night the largest crowd since V-E Day gathers before the Palace to cheer the visitor and witness a spectacular fireworks display.

POLITICS - 1960: Presidential politicking moves into high gear as the Wisconsin primaries pit Democrat front-runners Humphrey and Kennedy in a test of strength, won by Senator Kennedy with a 106,000 vote margin. On the G.O.P. aide, a host of party hopefuls at a box lunch session of the Republican Women's National Conference, Ike delivers a strong endorsement of Vice-President Nixon.

IKE GREETS COLOMBIA'S PRESIDENT: President Alberto Camargo Lleras of Colombia is welcomed by President Eisenhower as he begins a 13-day State visit. The Latin-American leader, one of America's staunchest allies in the Hemisphere, later addresses Congress.

ACADEMY AWARDS 1960
Highlights of Hollywood's BIG night, the glittering, dramatic Oscar Awards for the year's finest motion picture achievements at ceremonies in the Pantages Theatre that are the focus of attention for millions across the nation.

SPACE BEACON SATELLITE
At Cape Canaveral, a Thor-Able-Star rocket places the "Transit" satellite in orbit - an experimental space "lighthouse" whose radio beacon will make possible new and enormously improved navigational systems for airmen and mariners throughout the world.

PRINCE HIRO AT HOME
In Tokyo, intimate family scenes of the infant Prince Hiro with his parents Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko, despite the grandeur of imperial palace setting and the nobility of his descent, looking and acting like any adorable, weeks-old tot.

AMPHIBIOUS CAR SHOWN
On Long Island, New York, a new amphibious sports car is shown. The amazing import can scoot along the open road, dart through traffic, or plunge off a ramp into deep water and cruise along at a brisk clip, navigating in fine style. This could make bridges out of style.

MINI-MIDSHIPMEN BOXING
At Annapolis, the peanut brigade turns out for fisticuffs. Pee-wee pugilists from Navy families face off in the squared circle, slinging gloves almost as big as they are themselves, in helter-skelter hi-jinks.

25 YEARS AGO

In Italy, leaders of Britain, France and Italy confer on German rearmament in violation of the Versailles Treaty. American college students across the country join in tumultuous pacifist demonstrations. President Roosevelt returns from a two week fishing trip to face the problems of the nation. Old political foes Herbert Hoover and Al Smith join in a plea for aid to the Salvation Army. Notables of the nation lead the high-style Easter Parade up New York's Fifth Avenue. Amelia Earhart completes a 1700-mile flight from Burbank, California to Mexico City. Aviatrix Bernadine King, flying less than a year, sets a new record, for upside-down flight!
