TRUMAN ENDS HOSTILITIES
WASHINGTON – Proclaiming the end of hostilities and thereby wiping out 20 wartime laws, including industry seizure powers and excise taxes, the President announces drastic step to the nation. Other wartime emergency powers, however, are retained.

EARTHQUAKE IN JAPAN
JAPAN – Dramatic first picture of the terrible earthquake and tidal wave that brought death to several thousand and left hundreds of thousands homeless. Fifty towns and villages were leveled by the huge waves that followed the worst quake in years.

MUMMERS PARADE IN SNOW
PHILADELPHIA – The New Year’s Day pageant of colorful floats and paraders dressed in sweeping and elaborate gowns adds a new note this year, as a blizzard showers white “confetti” down upon the marchers and spectators.

G.O.P. SOLONS GET SET
WASHINGTON – On the eve of the 80th Congress, Republican Senators Taft, Vendenberg, Bricker, Lodge, White and others complete plans for party’s organization. The Republicans now have a majority after 14 years of the New Deal.

WRESTLING IN GAY PAREE
PARIS – Two French grunt-and-groan champs slug it out in a dizzy round of thumping falls bone-crushing holds. The wrestling fans at ringside are on edge in this battle royale from Gay Paree.

PRIZE SPANISH LIVESTOCK
SPAIN – Prize-winning horses and cattle are on parade in this colorful contest in Spain, where you’ll see huge percheron horses and other blue-bloods of the animal world.

WINTER FLOODS IN CANADA
QUEBEC – Floods, accompanied by snow and ice, grip many provincial towns, trapping hundreds in the homes and causing extensive property damage. Food and milk are delivered to homes by boat!

80th CONGRESS CONVENES, HEARS TRUMAN ADDRESS
WASHINGTON – For the first time in fourteen years, a Republican-dominated congress assembles to hear the presidential message on the state of the Union. He asks for moderate labor legislation and urges speeding of peace settlements.

ILLINOIS WINS IN ROSE BOWL
PASADENA – Midwest routs Far West in the Rose Bowl classic, as 90,000 fans see Illinois score at will against U.C.L.A., to win 45-14.

GEORGIA COPS SUGAR BOWL
NEW ORLEANS – Coming from behind, the Bulldogs nip the North Carolina Tarheels, 20-10, to win the Sugar Bowl Classic in rainy weather.

RICE IS ORANGE BOWL VICTOR
MIAMI – Scoring a touchdown and a safety in the first period, Rice stops Tennessee during the rest of the game to emerge victorious, 8-0.

TOURNAMENT OF ROSES
PASADENA – The scintillating pre-Rose Bowl game spectacle is replete with gala floats and lovely lassies, colorful displays that bring out countless thousands to witness the cavalcade of color.

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. – Roaring out of control for hours, a raging fire wrecks one railroad pier, damages another and consumes tons of export cargo before firemen can bring the inferno under control. It’s a spectacular blaze.

MARSHALL TO SUCCEED BYRNES
WASHINGTON – Because of poor health, State Secretary James Byrnes steps down after the arduous task of fighting for peace. General Marshall, returning from China, is named to succeed him.

FIRE GUTS TOKYO G.I. HOUSING
TOKYO, JAPAN – Flames destroy the enlisted men’s mess in the Palace Heights housing community, and force enlisted men and their families to flee from their Quonset-type homes while the fire was fought.

“IKE” DENIES POLITICAL PLANS
MIAMI – Gen. Eisenhower, in an interview at Pratt General Hospital, denies rumors that he plans to run for President in 1948. The U.S. Chief of Staff says that he has no political ambitions.

CHELSEA ARTS BALL
LONDON – Revival of the fabulous Chelsea Arts Ball after eight years of war draws thousands of gay revelers to Albert Hall for a mad-cap round of gaiety and frolic, climaxed by a midnight brawl.

SKIING THRILLS
SUN VALLEY SKI CHAMPS
IDAHO – The famed resort in the Sawtooth Mts. Opens to the public after its years of war service. Skiers from 19 colleges take part in tricky slalom races in the Intercollegiate meet.

BEAR MT. SKI MEET
BEAR MT., N.Y. – A spectacular leap of 146 feet wins the Torger Tokle Memorial Jump for Art Davlin, amateur ski champ. The only girl entrant, Dot Graves, thrills spectators with her performance. Chills – and spills!

BYRNES CALLS FOR REAL PEACE
CLEVELAND – Speaking before the Cleveland Council of World Affairs, Secretary of State James F. Byrnes declares that the U.S. must see to it that the peace is a real, lasting peace. He expresses confidence in the work of the United Nations.

JAP “REDS” DEMONSTRATE
TOKYO – An estimated half a million Japs assemble in the Imperial grounds to listen to anti-Cabinet speakers and to raise their shouts in protest to the government’s new Yoshida Cabinet.

NOVEL FIRE-ESCAPE DEVICE
ATLANTA – Not far from hotel where over 100 persons lost lives in a disastrous fire, inventor successfully demonstrates his amazing device that lowers him from the 18th floor to the ground, safely and gently.

EXCESS CHAMICAL BLOWS UP
LAKE LENORE, WASH. – Great fiery explosions and smaller July 4th varieties rip the lake’s surface when thousands of pounds of surplus metallic sodium are dumped into the lake from a 100-foot cliff.

NEW YORK – Plenty of scrappy action and plenty of Kayos mark the preliminary bouts in the Golden Gloves tourney. Watch these young contenders exchange fast blows in a round of eye-catching action.

THE MARCH OF DIMES
America falls in step with the March of Dimes! In Washington, the First Lady and Margaret Truman officially open the drive by placing theirs, and the President’s contribution, in the Missouri bottle. In New York, Mayor O’Dwyer opens the nation-wide drive to aid infantile victims. Little Nancy Drury is the campaign’s “Dimes” girl.

EPISCOPAL BISHOP INSTALLED
WASHINGTON – Impressive religious scenes mark the installation of the Rev. Henry Knox Sherrill as presiding Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Churches of America. Hundreds attend the impressive rites.

WORLD PREMIERE ON TRAIN
WASHINGTON – The first motion picture theatre on rails, the C. & O. “Chessie Theatre,” inaugurates its regular motion picture program with a premiere of the new Universal-International hit – “Swell Guy.”

RUSH INDO-CHINA DEFENSES
SAIGON – In these scenic pictures from Indo-China, where Vietnam forces are battling French troops, France’s Overseas Minister Moutet arrives by air to speed his nation’s defense of its Far Eastern possession.

GAMBLING MACHINES JUNKED
SKOKIE, ILL. – After police have rounded up confiscated pin-ball and slot machines, they toss the devices onto a junk pile and set the business on fire with gasoline. The flames “hit the jack-pot”!

COYOTE-HUNT BY PLANE
COLORADO – Flying in a special ski-shod plane, two daring hunters take the “high” road to coyote-hunting, zooming down on the marauding critters to blast them with shot-guns. It’s thrilling – and dangerous.

GOVERNORSHIP FEUD RAGES IN GEORGIA
ATLANTA – Who is Governor of Georgia? That question is still unsolved, despite lock-outs and armed guards and angry words. “Gov.” Talmadge, or “Gov.” Thompson – that’s the question the Courts will have to decide, as both men refuse to back down in their claim to the office.

ARMY-NAVY MERGER PLANNED
WASHINGTON – The long-awaited merger plan for the armed services is made public, following a meeting attended by high-ranking civilian and military heads of both branches.

GREEK SHIP RUNS AGROUND
ENGLAND – Rescue vessels give up hope of re-floating the Greek freighter Varvassi, hard aground on the “Needles” off the Isle of Wight. Thousands of gallons of wine are going to Davy Jones’ Locker.

STRIFE ON GREEK FRONTIER
GREECE – Dramatic films from the Greek frontier, where fighting is still raging between Greek troops and rebel units. The Universal cameraman brings back a vivid record of civil strife in action.

“SMALL FRY” FINERY (Exclusive)
NEW YORK – The younger set shares the spotlight with fashions in this swanky style parade for Juniors and Junior Misses at the Stork Club. The kiddies look cute in their finery by Miss L. Brogan.

BYRNES SIGNS TREATIES
WASHINGTON – Retiring Secretary of State James F. Byrnes goes through with his last official act by signing the first peace treaties of World War II. The pacts are for Italy and three other Axis allies.

FRANKLIN BIRTHDAY MARKED
PHILADELPHIA – On the 241st anniversary of the birth of Ben Franklin, Philadelphi’s most famous citizen, the Poor Richard Club presents its annual achievement medal to Robert McLean, news executive.

WAR RAGES IN INDO-CHINA
HANOI – Scenes of bitter fighting in strife-torn Indo-China. French Government forces shell rebel-held towns and then move in for bitter in-fighting with machine guns and small arms, to mop up the entrenched Vietnamese.

BATTLE OF GOVERNORS
ATLANTA – The governorship rivalry takes a new turn, with students staging protest rally against “Gov.” Talmadge and hanging him in effigy. Meanwhile, Mr. Talmadge suggests a “white primary” election to decide between himself and “Gov.” Thompson.

MUDDY MAULERS
LAKE WORTH, FLA. – The gentle art of mayhem takes a mud bath, and the results are hilarious. Local maulers fill the ring with gooey, sticky mud – and then dive in for a mad round of wrestling, a la mud!

MARSHALL TAKES OATH
WASHINGTON – Gen. George C. Marshall, wartime Chief of Staff, returns from China and assumes his new role as Secretary of State. Chief Justice Vinson administers the oath, while Pres. Truman and members of his Cabinet look on.

PENNSYLVANIA INAUGURAL
HARRISBURG – James H. Duff is sworn in as Governor of the Quaker State at ceremonies on the steps of the Capitol. Ex-Chief Justice Maxey officiates at the inaugural rites witnessed by thousands.

TEXAS GOVERNOR SWORN IN
AUSTIN – Colorful scenes mark the inauguration of Beauford H. Jester as Governor of the Lone Star State. Thousands attend the impressive ceremonies and inaugural parade.

SKI JUMPING CHAMPS
FOX RIVER GROVE, ILL. – Down the incredibly steep slide – and off into space soar the ski=jumping champions during thrill-packed seconds of the 41st annual tourney. Amazing leaps – and breath taking spills.

AURIOL HEADS FRENCH GOVT.
PARIS – All political groups in France, from the extreme Left to the extreme Right, join the new Cabinet under Vincent Auriol, newly-elected President of the Republic. Paul Ramadier is named Premier of the new coalition government. Impressive ceremonies are held when Auriol is informed of his majority.

INDO-CHINA WAR RAGED
INDO-CHINA – With more thousands of troops on the way, French forces in Indo-China continue stubborn mopping-up operations against entrenched Vietnam rebels. Full-scale bloody warfare raged in many sectors.

LATIN STUDENTS ARRIVE
NEW YORK – Nineteen students from 15 South American nations arrive by air, to begin a six-week tour of schools and homes in the United States. The youngsters are delegates to a Youth Forum to be held in New York.

WINTER GRIPS EUROPE
FRANCE – The Loire River is jammed with ice; barricades are built to prevent damage to bridges, and Bazookas are used to blast holes in the ice.
HOLLAND – The coldest weather in years blocks traffic on the canals, but provides an icy surface for ice-boats and skaters.

DOG RACES DRAW FANS
MIAMI – Dog races draw a gala crowd to the West Flagler Kennel Club where the fleet canine speedsters give the iron rabbit a run for his money. It’s close all the way – but Mr. Rabbit is an easy winner.

ICE BOAT REGATTA
OSHKOSH, WISC. – Anything can happen- and does- when the ice-boat skippers get underway in a thrilling regatta on Lake Winnebago. One boat throws its pilot on a turn; another crashes into a newsreel car.

POLISH ELECTIONS
POLAND – First pictures of the recent Polish elections that brought criticism from some nations and counter-claims from others that the balloting was conducted without violence or prejudice. In farm areas, natives in colorful costumes stream to the polls.

GRACE MOORE DIES IN CRASH
COPENHAGEN – Tragedy strikes through the air, to claim the life of the famed opera singer; the Crown Prince of Sweden, and twenty others, who perished in the flaming wreckage of an airliner that crashed during take-off.

RECORD COLD GRIPS EUROPE
In Britain, in the Ruhr, and in Hamburg, the severest Winter in many years brings added suffering to Europe’s hungry and homeless. Rivers are blocked with ice; railroads are at a stand-still, as Jack Frost rules with an icy hand.

SKI ACES VIE IN JUMP
DUBUQUE, IOWA – Thrills and breath-taking spills – and pretty ski meet queens – combine to make the Longview Ski Club’s annual carnival a colorful mid-Winter pageant of action and suspense.

ORIENTAL KINGDOM RETURNED
LAOS – This Oriental kingdom, once part of Siam but now returned to Indo-China, is given back to its rightful owner, King Sisavano-Vono, during quaint ceremonies attended by French army officials and native potentates.

CHICAGO – Fifty-six high school students get their diplomas from acting Supt. George Cassel, and half of them are twin brothers or sisters of the other half. Graduation to them is a double honor.

AUTOS RACE ON BEACH
DAYTONA – There’s many a near-miss in the 160 mile Stock Car Race on the beach famed for its speed classics. One auto loses a wheel on a turn, but the others keep right on churning up the sand

MONARCHS OFF ON TOUR
ENGLAND – On board the new battleship “Vanguard,” Britain’s royal family embark for South Africa and their ten-week tour of the vast Dominion. Cheering throngs line the streets as the royal autos carry their majesties to the train.

ON THE COLD FRONT
In many parts of the U.S., severe Winter weather continues. Milwaukee is paralyzed by a blizzard that cripples rail traffic and stalls autos. Several persons are dead in the wake of the storm.

$2,000,000 GRANARY FIRE
TACOMA – Spectacular scenes of a two-million dollar fire that sweeps a huge flour mill. Firemen fight a losing battle against the flames, which destroy the tall building and adjacent structures.

TRUMAN AND CABINET POSE
WASHINGTON – The first formal portrait of our President and his official family. Mr. Truman poses with members of his Cabinet for the newsreel camera. O. Max Gardner, our new envoy to Great Britain, calls at the White House before leaving to assume his new duties in London.

MODEL PLANES FLY HIGH
MIAMI – Tricky new “control-line” gas-powered model planes take off and zoom dizzily through the sky, as their owner-builder-pilots control them from the ground with lone wires. One model exceeds 100 M.P.H.

ST. PAUL WINTER CARNIVAL
ST. PAUL – The colorful Winter Carnival complete with parades and coronation ceremony, returns for its annual sojourn of pageantry and pomp. King Boreas is crowned and holds say over millions of loyal subjects.

OPERATION GROUNDHOG
QUARRYVILLE, PA. – Equipped with goofy search devices, and dressed in humorous costumes, members of the “Slumbering Lodge of Groundhogs” find Mr. Woodchuck. He sees his shadow, and that means more Winter.

TORNADO WRECKS AIRFIELD
MACON, GA. – One of several tornadoes that swept over the South singled out a new airport here, wrecking a big hangar and demolishing many aircraft.
SALEM, ARK. – A tornado rips through this town, 24 years after another had killed and injured scores. This time the people were safe in storm cellars, but many homes were leveled.
