“MONTY” VISITS STALIN
MOSCOW – Britain’s war-time Army Chief, Field Marshal Montgomery, is a special guest of Premier Stalin during a visit to Russia. An impressive military review signals the end of “Monty’s” goodwill tour.

CUSTOMS SEIZES JAP GEMS
SAN FRANCISCO - $210,000 worth of precious jewels, seized by U.S. Customs authorities from an Army colonel who said he collected them as souvenirs in Japan, are displayed for the newsreel camera.

“HUSKY” CREW TURNS OUT
SEATTLE – The biggest turn-out in Washington crew history – 250 rowing hopefuls – gets in training for the 1947 season, with arduous work outs on Lake Washington. Coach Ulbrickson looks happy.

MIAMI – Steady winds and a favorable sea make it “small boat weather,” and the first across in the 14th running of the Lipton Challenge Cup race off the beach is Hostess II, a jib-headed yawl.

NEW YORK – Canada’s Governor-General, Viscount Alexander, accompanied by his wife, receives a warm welcome from Manhattan, during a colorful parade up Broadway, and at City Hall where Mayor O’Dwyer extends official greetings.

FRANCE – Snow and rain make the going tough in this cross-country cycle race, but the weather is nothing compared to the steep hills the riders have to climb enroute. It’s uphill work, and then come the spills!

Hollywood stars join in the national Brotherhood Week of the Conference of Christians and Jews. A timely appeal to all Americans to lay aside differences in race and religion and to strive for national unity and brotherhood!

ITALY – It’s Carnival time in Viareggio, and despite post-war poverty, the Riviera resort town is decked out in festive garb, and the quaint floats and their weird figures cast a gala charm over the streets.

ENGLAND – Marooned for almost a month on Bishop Rock Light, off the Scilly Isles, two radio commentators are finally rescued. In rough seas, a small lighter stands by while the men clamber down a rope ladder.

NEW YORK – The 71st annual Westminster Kennel Club Show is one of the keenest in a competitive sense in dog history. Champions in many breeds, all sizes and types, strut their stuff for the judges.

FRENCH BOBSLED RACES
FRANCE – High in the snow covered Savoie Alps, French bobsled kings hold court in a wintry setting. Picard and his crew of three win the championship race against time and treacherous turns.

SWEDE WINS SKI JUMP
ST. PAUL – Erik Lindstrom, four times Swedish Nat’l champ, wins the Central U.S. Ski Assn. jump at Battle Creek Park, with a thrilling leap of 18- feet. Some entrants have narrow escapes!

CARNIVAL SEASON
From the sunny South to snow covered hills of New England – it’s Carnival time. In New Orleans, countless thousands of merry makers jam the streets for traditional Hermes Parade, signal for Mardi Gras. In Tampa, Fla., the annual Gasparilla Pirate Carnival is a colorful, swash-buckling affair. In Hanover, N.H., snow and ice set the stage for the Dartmouth Winter Carnival, where pretty girls and ice sculpture take a bow!

BABE RUTH GOES HOME
NEW YORK – The “Sultan of Swat,” recovering from a serious operation, goes home from the hospital for a rest, and well-wishers by the score crowd around his auto to congratulate him upon his recovery.

CANADA DIGS OUT
SASKATCHEWAN – High winds and sever blizzards combine to cripple many areas of the western province. Railroads are blocked for days. Spectacular scenes are shown of a locomotive battling towering drifts!

Confiscated pictures from the private collection of Eva Braun, Hitler’s consort, reveal intimate scenes of Nazi life at Berchtesgaden. Hitler and henchmen play on the eve of defeat.

22 DEAD IN TRAIN WRECK
ALTOONA, PA. – Twisted, shattered wreckage of the locomotive and five cars lies at the bottom of a ravine, graveyard for twenty-two persons. Scores were injured, some seriously, when the crack flier left the rails and plunged down into the ravine.

ROYAL FAMILY ON TOUR
ON BOARD H.M.S. VANGUARD – Britain’s King and Queen, and the two Princesses, enroute to South Africa, take part in shipboard affairs. The royal family tries deck sports, including target shooting and deck tennis.

REX RULES MARDI GRAS
NEW ORLEANS – Mardi Gras comes to a glittering finale, and thousands jam the streets and forget their cares as the traditional Rex Parade signals finis to the 1947 Mardi Gras celebration.

LOS ANGELES – In the wake of one of the worst explosions in city history, which shattered a downtown electro-plating plant and nearby buildings, fifteen persons are dead and over 100 injured. The mystery blasts leveled several structures.

BLIZZARD BLANKETS EAST
The worst storm in six years swirls into East coast cities, blocking traffic and stalling trains. In New York, many motorists are marooned by high drifts.

WASHINGTON – The nation’s Capital is also snowbound under winter’s worst storm. The magic carpet etches its tracery of white of familiar scenes.

WAR LEADERS HONORED
NEW YORK – Nine of the men who led America’s armed might to victory receive honorary degrees at Columbia University. Secretary of State Marshall is honored, along with Admirals Halsey, Nimitz and King, and Gen. Eisenhower.

INDO-CHINA – French troops liberate a town in Annam after a bloody 47-day siege, freeing hundreds of terrified natives. In other parts of the strife-torn land, civilians are evacuated as bitter fighting continues.

WASHINGTON – In a sweeping statement to the press, Robert R. Young, gadfly of the railroads, announces formation of the Federation for Railway Progress. He outlines the ills of our present system and points the way towards improvement.

PALESTINE – British Mandate authorities clamp rigid restrictions down on Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other cities following an outbreak of new hostilities and bomb attacks. Troops and police guard all roads, as martial law is imposed in the Holy Land.

HAWAII-N.Y. AIR RECORD
HONOLULU – The Army’s twin-Mustang “Betty Jo” takes off from Hickam Field, and lands at LaGuardia Field in New York fourteen and a half hours later. Two fliers set new fighter-plane record during 5,000 hop.

FOUR DEAD IN GAS BLAST
CHICAGO – A rubble of bricks and twisted girders remains of three-story building on edge of Chicago “Loop” after gas explosions completely demolished the structure, killing four persons and injuring 35 others.

ROYAL FAMILY IN AFRICA
CAPTETOWN – Amid scenes of impressive splendor, and with thousands of loyal subjects out to greet them, the King and Queen and the Princesses arrive for South Africa tour. First on their itinerary is a garden party.

PALESTINE – These dramatic first pictures of the bombing of the British officers club in Jerusalem show the terrible terrorist blast which killed sixteen persons and injured scores. Many suspects are rounded up for deportation as the British clamp down martial law.

MEXICO HAILS TRUMAN
MEXICO CITY – Highlights of Pres. Truman’s three-day visit to our Good Neighbor across the Rio Grande. Upon arrival he is met by Pres. Aleman, and receives a tumultuous welcome. A spectacular student festival is held in his honor.

HOOVER URGES EUROPE RELIEF
WASHINGTON – Deeply concerned over the “grim” conditions in Europe, our former President, just back from an emergency food relief study, declares that the U.S. must feed Europe’s staving millions if it wants peace. He paints a bleak picture of conditions abroad.

NAVY CAGERS “SINK” AWAY
ANNAPOLIS – In the 24th meeting of the two service teams, the future Admirals scuttle the West Pointers in a see-saw basketball contest marked by several nasty falls. The final score is; Navy 64; Army 42.

WACO, TEXAS – Receiving an honorary degree from Baylor University, the President declares that an economic was will result if trade barriers are not removed. He says that the world looks to this country for leadership in reducing international tariff walls.

LEWIS BLASTS GOV’T
WASHINGTON – The fiery, beetle-browed labor chief, appearing before the Senate Labor Committee in the wake of the Supreme Court decision adversely affecting his UMW fortunes, calls the government “the muscle man” for the coal operators.

178 DIE IN R.R. WRECK
HACHIOJI, JAPAN – Six coaches are twisted, smashed coffins for almost 200 persons following a disastrous railway wreck. Bodies are lined up along the tracks, and relief agencies are hard up to aid the survivors.

MT. ETNA ON RAMPAGE
SICILY – Mount Etna, Sicily’s famed but temperamental volcano, goes on a rampage, pouring molten lava down its sides and engulfing several villages in its path. Terrified natives flee for their lives.

BLAZE WRECKS LINER
NEW YORK – Smoke and flames gut the S.S. John Erricson, formerly Swedish liner “Kungsholm,” thwarting fire fighting efforts and endangering the “Queen Elizabeth.” Officials fear the ship is beyond repair.
