BOSTON, MASS. – At Faneuil Hall, “Cradle of Liberty,” Dr. Karl T. Compton of M.I.T., U.M.T. chief, tells delegates at National Security Committee meeting that America must adopt military training to meet the threat of attack.

TRUMAN ASKS EQUALITY
WASHINGTON – Pres. Truman, speaking at the Lincoln Memorial before vast throng of Americans, demands that we fight harder to provide equality for all our citizens. He calls for end of racial barriers.

OLD-AGE GROUP AT CAPITOL
WASHINGTON – The Townsend pension-plan bandwagon rolls into the Capital to spur passage of the national prosperity plan - $100 a month to all over sixty. Dr. Townsend and thousands of his followers convene on Capitol steps.

FRENCH “REDS” DEMONSTRATE
PARIS – In a renewal of demonstrations protesting French policies, thousands of communist workers assemble at the National Assembly. Police battle the rioters, and several are injured.

SEATTLE – A great Harvard crew rows to victory on Lake Washington, noising out a determined Yale shell by less than a length, and setting a new speed record for the course. The Washington oarsmen finish third.

MARBLE CHAMPS KNUCKLE DOWN
WILDWOOD, N.J. – Trick shooting boys – and girls, too – from all parts of the U.S. gather for the National Marbles Tournament, with some fancy knuckle-work in evidence. The champ is Ben Sklar of Pittsburgh.

STUNT MEN COME TO GRIEF
FRANCE – The odds catch up with the motorcycle stunt men, rehearsing for thrill show. The trapeze-cycle crashes into the barrier – and oops! The driver takes a nasty spill, is carried from the arena badly injured.

SPAIN – Argentina’s First Lady receives a triumphant welcome during her good-will visit in Spain. The attractive Ambassadress from the Argentine dazzles countless thousands, during a tour which includes a huge reception by Franco in Madrid.

BALTIMORE – The Army Air Force’s great new XB-48, a six-motored jet-propelled bomber, undergoes test flights at the Glenn Martin plant. She’ll carry ten tons of bombs at 480 miles per hour.

FRANCE – Alluring French lassies in alluring (meaning “brief”) bathing suits strut their stuff for the edification of the judges (AND the male populace). One excitable spectator really falls for this sort of thing!

DUTCH HERRING FLEET SAILS
THE HAGUE – Holland’s famed herring fleet – sixty boats and hundreds of skilled hands – sets out for calm seas and a huge harvest from the deep. In the North Sea, the nets are set and the “net profits” are hauled aboard.

TRUMAN HONORS ACHESON
WASHINGTON – In a surprise ceremony in the White House Rose Garden, the President presents the Medal for Merit to Dean Acheson, retiring Undersecretary of State, for his efforts for victory and peace.

BROOKLYN – Four hundred youngsters from the Metropolitan area get away in the eliminations of the All-America Soap Box Derby at Prospect Park. Nicky Nicastro in his “Fireball Special” wins.

KID SLUGGERS LET FLY
CORAL GABLES – Pin-weight boxing! At the War Memorial Youth Center, scrappy youngsters ranging in age from three to six exchange blows in a junior-grade thriller. The kids are small but the bouts are king-size!

TRUMAN CALLS FOR WORLD COOPERATION
CHARLOTTESVILLE – World peace will not be secure until all nations work together for peace, Pres. Truman tells Independence Day throng at Monticello, the home of Tomas Jefferson. Mr. Truman also avers that some nations have taken an erroneous stand on the Marshall aid plan.

WAR CRIMINALS PAY PENALTY
SHANGHAI, CHINA – Jap war criminals, including the notorious “Tiger of Kiangyin,” pay the supreme penalty for their atrocities. They are executed, and angry mobs storm police lines to glimpse their bodies.

BEAUTY QUEENS COMPETE
PANAMA CITY, FLA. – Forty-six young Dixie belles vie for honors in beach pageant at Panama City, replete with spectacular float parade. The winner is lovely Bobby Sauls, who is crowned “Miss Southeast.”

KIDS ON POLICE OUTING
CONEY ISLAND – Seven thousand thrilled orphans are happy guests of the Police Anchor Club on an outing at Steeplechase Park. There’s rides and excitement, and plenty of good things to eat.

VAN NUYS, CALIF. – The smallest all metal airplane to the world – an 800 lb. midget with a 19 foot wing takes off for test flights. The amazing little flying Lilliputt hits 200 m.p.h.

DENVER – Mrs. George Zaharias – Babe Didrickson – comes home from her golfing victory in England, to the cheers and acclaim of her hometown friends. “The Babe” and her husband receive a warm welcome.

WASHINGTON – At United Mine Workers’ headquarters, much needed coal is assured the nation as John L. Lewis and the Coal Operators sign new contracts. Under new terms, miners win big wage boosts.

AUSTRIA – Spectacular scenes of a flood of logs, racing down mountain stream! When the dams are opened, the raging cataract of water carries the timber miles downstream, in a veritable Niagara of logs.

LOS ANGELES – The gala premier of “Black Narcissus,” the J. Arthur Rank hit featuring Deborah Kerr, draws a colorful gathering of movie big wigs, including Mr. Rank and Miss Kerr, and many others.

“ARMED” WINS STARS & STRIPES
CHICAGO – It’s a stretch duel between “Armed” and “With Pleasure” in the rich Arlington Park classic, with the former winning before a huge holiday throng of turf fanciers. This is horse-racing at its best.

AT SEA – In the iceberg-infested waters of the North Pacific, Jap whalers pursue the valuable whale. Modern methods of harpooning and cutting are used and a rich haul of the creatures results.

WASHINGTON – It’s another Republican landslide (in the 5th) when the G.O.P. ball playing Congressmen score six runs to sew up the game, 16-13. It’s all fun (no politics) and everybody gets a laugh.

ARGENTINA – Pres. Gonzalez Videla of Chile receives warm welcome, and embrace, from Pres. Peron as he arrives during his goodwill visit of Latin America.

BRAZIL – A round of glitering ceremonies awaits Videla at Rio, where Pres. Dutra confers upon him a high Brazilian decorations.

WASHINGTON – James V. Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, moves up to become new over all secretary of defense under the new merger plan. He explains his views on new unification at news conference.
