America’s newly independent Air Forces stage a spine tingling 40th anniversary celebration over cities of the U.S. Bombers and speedy fighters flash through cloudless skies as the nation pays homage to the men of the aerial forces. In Washington, seven Superforts arrive from Tokyo.

ELLIOT ROOSEVELT TESTIFIES
WASHINGTON – The senate group investigating $40,000,000 in war-plane contracts to the Howard Hughes firm, hears the son of the late President Roosevelt testify on his role in awarding of contracts. Also, John Meyer, Hughes publicity agent, tells his side of lavis war time party expenditures.

WASHINGTON – Charges and counter-charges fly during the Senate group’s investigation of the $40,000,000 war-plane contract. Howard Hughes accuses Senator Brewster of misstatements; and Brewster takes the stand to refute the charge.

THE HAMBLETONIAN
GOSHEN, N.Y. – Harness racing’s blue-ribbon event, The Hambletonian, becomes history before 19,000 racing fans, as “Hoot Mon” annexes two out of the three heats to win the coveted trophy. “Hoot Mon” defeats the favored “Rodney,” and sets a new event record.

FERRIER WINS ST. PAUL OPEN
ST. PAUL – Big Jim Ferrier of Chicago holes out with a four under par 68 in the play-off of the Saint Paul Open tourney to beat young Freddy Haas of New Orleans. There’s some amazing shooting along the way – and plenty of laughs!

GLOBE AIR MARK BROKEN
CHICAGO – William P. Odom lands his Reynolds “Bombshell” bomber after circling the globe in 73 hours – a new record eclipsing Wiley Post’s old mark by over 100 hours. The weary flier flew almost 20,000 miles but looks shaved and rested after the harrowing ordeal.

THE FIGHT FOR PALESTINE
PALESTINE – Bomb explosions and attacks on British troops continue. Three soldiers die in blast at Labor Dept. headquarters, and the problem of the Holy Land continues. In France, refugee ship returning illegal immigrants awaits world verdict.

SENATE ADJOURNS PROBE
WASHINGTON – Unable to find a star witness, Johnny Meyer, and bogged down in further verbal clashes, the Senate group probing war-plane contracts adjourns until Fall. Howard Hughes makes final statement, blasting Senator Brewster.

THE GOLD CUP RACE
NEW YORK – In a grueling 90-mile race on the choppy waters of Jamaica Bay, Danny Foster of California pilots “Miss Peps V” to victory in the 40th Gold Cup classic. The defending champ, Guy Lombardo, is forced out in the final heat by hull damage and an oil line break. Foster wins the last heat with a broken propeller blade.

KARACHI – Partition for India! Members of Moslem congress hear historic announcement of separate Pakistan state by Britain’s Lord Mountbatten. Ali Jinnah and other leaders debate problems of India’s survival beset by strife and rioting.

U.S.S.R. – Hurtling down stream through swirling rapids on board a huge raft made of logs proves spectacular and dangerous work for the Russian lumberjacks. They navigate with amazing precision.

BABIES STRUT THEIR STUFF
WILDWOOD, N.J. – The accent is on youth (extreme) as the cream of the infant crop comes to the top for the beach resort’s annual Baby Parade. Cuddlesome kiddies proudly strut their stuff during the parade.

SCOUT JAMBOREE OPENS
MOISSON, FRANCE – The first contingent of Boy Scouts from all over the world arrives at the Jamboree site and sets up camp. There are girls in the group, too, and they pitch in just like their brothers.

19-CAR FREIGHT WRECK
ELIZABETH, N.J. – No one is hurt in the spectacular derailment of a 19-car freight train on the Pennsylvania Railroad, but thousands of commuters are delayed for hours. The wreck jams all four tracks.

PATCHOGUE, L.I. – Whizzing around a special outdoor track, tiny model racing cars hit terrific speeds as model fans cheer. The midget racers are gas-powered, and a thin wire holds them on course.

KIRKLAND, WASH. – Headline attraction of the Kirkland Summer Festival is the Pig Swimming Derby. Yes, pigs can swim! When pretty girls trip the chute, the poor porkers go splash, and start paddling.

FRANCE – Into the fertile fields of Haute Garonne in Southern France, locusts descend in swarms, to lay waste to sorely needed crops. With every means at their command, farmers fight the pests but it is a losing fight.

YANKS WED JAPS
YOKOHAMA – A former American Lieutenant registers his bride to be at the American consulate. She is the daughter of Saburu Krusu, who talked peace in Washington, as the Japs rained bombs on Pearl Harbor. One hundred and seventy five Yanks have applied for permission to wed Japanese girls.

PETROPOLIS BRAZIL – The Inter-American peace parley debates mutual assistance and other hemisphere problems. Secretary Marshall heads the U.S. delegation, which is working in close harmony with other American nations to promote goodwill and unity.

BERLIN – A Berlin theatre has a novel method of schooling actors in speaking and singing. The swim suit clad students practice laughing, singing and emoting in the most amazing positions!

BURBANK, CALIF. – Young Donny Emery, Jr. is only six but he rides his motorcycle like a veteran, at high speeds. It’s startling to see the kid champ do figure eights and other stunts, with the pose of his champion father.

MONTREAL, QUE. – Winning four matches out of five against the Czechs, in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup tourney, the Australian team, led by John Bromwich, wins the right to meet the U.S. in the finals.

CHICAGO – In a pre-season thriller, the All-Stars administer a stunning 16 to 0 upset to the touted Chicago Bears before 106,000 grid fans at Soldier Field. Ratterman and Young spark the aggressive collegians, who score two touchdowns and a field goal.

BRITISH WITHDRAW TROOPS
BOMBAY, INDIA – The first contingent of thousands to leave India since the partition sails on the “Georgic” for home. Lord and Lady Mount-batten see the “Tommies” off. All told, 50,000 will leave.

PRES. TRUJILLO INAUGURAL
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Diplomatic representatives from the U.S. are on hand for the inaugural of General Trujillo. Following a military review, Pres. Trujillo receives the acclaim of thousands at glittering ceremony.

ORPHANS REACH ZION HAVEN
PALESTINE – A shipload of Jewish orphan children arrives in Haifa from Cyprus concentration camps, freed by the British and given safe passage to the Holy Land. Meanwhile, violence still flares.

HOLIDAY TRAIN JAMMED
GERMANY – No sitting room left, and no standing room either, so Berliners anxious to get away on a vacation hang on the outside of the train r even sit on top. They get plenty of air, at least!

SWIM QUEENS IN A.A.U. MEET
CHICAGO – Capped by a spectacular exhibition of diving, the women’s A.A.U. outdoor championships sparkle with pulchritude, and with impressive free-style and diving contests.

RUSS CITIZENS QUIT CHINA
SHANGHAI – In a mass exodus, 1500 Soviet citizens embark on the Russian ship “Ditch” for home. The repatriates have been promised home and land, but the parting from friends is a sad one.

N.Y. WELCOMES THE LEGION
NEW YORK – Their ranks swelled by veterans of World War II, over One Million American Legion members swarm into the “Big City” for the annual convention. The impressive turn-out gets off to an official start at Madison Square Garden, where Gov. Dewey warns of un-preparedness and the spread of Communism.

WORLD’S AIR SPEED RECORD
MUROC, CAL. – Two pilots, one Navy and the other Marine eclipse the world’s speed record in the Navy’s Douglas “Skystreak.” Thrilling scenes show the record shattering speed runs above the Mojave Desert. Marine Major Carl sets a mark of 650 m.p.h.

BABY SEALS RESCUED
SEASIDE, ORE. – Separated from their “mamas” and helpless to fend for themselves, four baby seals are washed ashore. Helpful humans aid the youngsters ashore, and provide a free hand out of fresh fish. How the youngsters lap it up!

GALA ICE CARNIVAL
ATLANTIC CITY – A hot Summer treat is the Ice Capades of 1948, a glittering cool spectacle of flashing skaters, colorful costumes, and massed review numbers. A touch of nonsensical comedy helps round out a well-rounded show.

NEW YORK – The American Legion’s laugh-makers, the “Forty & Eight,” famed for their merrymaking hijinks aboard miniature locomotives and box-cars, swing down Eighth Ave. in a four hour parade. Millions of spectators witness the gala hoopla.

WAR TOOLS STORED
MARIETTA, GA. – The $65,000,000 Bell bomber factory is converted to the storage of millions in surplus war machines and tools. The vital equipment for making munitions will be kept under wraps for future eventualities.

BABIES ON PARADE
ASBURY PARK – It’s Baby’s day to strut at the ocean resort, where the annual baby parade brings out the cute tykes and fancy floats to show them off. The grand prize winner is a “Christmas Morning” creation.

LA JOLLA, CAL. – One of California’s most famous ocean swimming marathons – the 14th annual Rough Water contest – provides plenty of excitement and a couple of exhausted winners. More than 100 natators compete.

WILDWOOD, N.J. – A spanking breeze plus a fleet of sixty trim sailboats adds up to thrills and unexpected surprises during the Pageant of Sails regatta. Several craft capsize and their skippers get a wet dunking.
