TEXAS DISASTER
DEATH TOLL IN HUNDREDS AS FIRES RGE IN CITY RIPPED BY BLASTS
TEXAS CITY, TEXAS – First pictures of the worst American disaster in 30 years! Indescribable scenes of devastation and death hover over this port city following the explosion of a nitrate-laden ship which set off other blasts in chemical plants and oil refineries. The death toll is in the many hundreds, and 3,000 persons are injured. Another ship blows up the next day, further hampering rescue efforts and heroic work by firemen. Ambulances carry their grisly loads to morgues; hospitals are overflowing. Gov. Jester and Gen. Wain-wright direct the fight, as dense clouds billow over the stricken city.

EMPEROR GOES DEMOCRATIC
TOKYO – Breaking all precedent, Emperor Hirohito goes down onto the playing field to congratulate members of opposing soccer teams. Later, he and royal family attend sports show on palace grounds.

GLOBE FLIGHT MARK SET
NEW YORK – Less than 79 hours after taking off from LaGuardia Field, Milton Reynolds and his crew of two are back after circling the globe in their converted Army A-26 attack bomber. The newsreel camera also shows their stop-over in Tokyo.

LATEST PICTURES FORM TEXAS CITY
TEXAS CITY, TEXAS – Smoke and flames still rise from burning oil tanks as the stricken city counts its dead and digs out. The official toll is over 400, with hundred still missing. Grim evidence of the three-day battle against the flames is shown in these dramatic scenes.

TRUMAN URGES PRICE CUTS
NEW YORK – Addressing members of the Associated Press, the President urges immediate slashing of prices and warns that only by such reductions can this nation avoid a recession. Reductions will bring more prosperity, he avers.

KOREAN WINS MARATHON
BOSTON – Yun Bok Su, young Korean University student, wins the Boston Marathon by two-thirds of a mile, eclipsing a large field of international runners and setting a new course record.

EGG HITS NEW HIGH
NEW YORK – You won’t believe it until you see it – eggs dropping down ten stories and bouncing off a rubber mat. They don’t break (well, on the rebound maybe). You can even play ping-pong with eggs these days!

“LEAFS” WIN STANLEY CUP
TORONTO – 15,000 rabid hockey fans jam the Maple Leaf Gardens for the finals in the Stanley Cup series and see the Toronto ice stars clinch the trophy by defeating the defending champs, the Canadiens, by a score of 2-1.

RUSSIA – Foreign correspondents fly down from Moscow to tour the ruins of the famous city, turning point in the Russian fight against the Nazi horde. Amid the rubble left by war, thousands work and re-build.

NEW YORK – Francis Cardinal Spellman makes a touching appeal for your support in the 28th annual drive for Catholic Charities. Surrounded by youngsters at the Foundling Hospital, he says the sick and poor need your help.

NEW YORK – The General Assembly of the United Nations meets to undertake settlement of the thorny Palestine question. Brazil’s Aranha is named president of the session.

PALESTINE – Terrorists strike again! At Rehovoth, the Cairo-Haifa Expess is blown up and derailed. Eight are killed and forty-one injured.

MARSHALL HOME FROM MOSCOW
WASHINGTON – Secretary of State George Marshall arrives by plane from Moscow. Pres. Truman and other government officials greet the returning soldier-statesman who strived for peace and unity at the Four-Power Conference.

TEST MINE DISASTERS
BRUCETON, PA. – The Bureau of Mines sets off spectacular coal mine explosions in a test demonstration of the Centralia disaster. The terrific force of a mine explosion is dramatically shown.

BULLET-PROOF VEST SHOWN
PHILADELPHIA – Nerve wracking scenes, these, watching police fire point blank at a demonstrator dressed in a new type bullet proof vest. But, think how the fell a feels who’s “it”??

NEW YORK – It’s “Babe Ruth Day” for the nation’s baseball fans, and at the Yankee Stadium 59,000 fans cheer the beloved “King of Swat” as he steps up to home plate and says his “thanks”.

WASHINGTON – Miguel Aleman, the Mexican President, receives a tumultuous welcome in the United States. Pres. Truman greets him at the airport; he attends state functions, and lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier. Later, Mr. Aleman addresses a joint session of Congress.

5 DEAD IN TERROR BLAST
PALESTING – Five police officers are dead, and a heavily-guarded police compound a shambles, following a dynamite blast set off by terrorists. Several were injured in the daring daylight attack.

MADRID VICTORY PARADE
MADRID – On the eighth anniversary of victory in the Civil War, hundreds of thousands jam the streets to watch an impressive military review. General Franco receives a mass demonstration.

ROYALTY IN RHODESIA
SOUTH AFRICA – The Royal Family sees the sights in Rhodesia. After a look-see at Victoria Falls, Britain’s monarchs cross into Barotseland, where native drums beat and natives race their novel canoes.

GREEK KING TAKES OATH
ATHENS – During impressive ceremonies at the Greek Parliament, King Paul, accompanied by his Queen, takes the oath of office as head of the Greek state. Archbishop Damaskinos administers the oath.

HOUSTON, TEXAS – Canadian “Cheerio” champs demonstrate their technique for youngsters at high school. “Cheerio” is like yo-yo, but these talented twirlers come up with some amazing new twists!

“Jet Pilot” Wins At Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, KY. – It’s a close finish in the 1947 Kentucky Derby! “Jet Pilot” sets the pace the whole way, with the favored “Phalanx” coming up fast at the end but losing out by a head. “Faultless” is third in thrilling race, with 115,000 fans whooping it up at Churchilll Downs.

AFRICANS HAIL AURIOL
DAKAR – The French President steps ashore in West Africa during his tour of French colonial possessions. In Senegal, dusky native hail his arrival, and fierce camel riders and Spahis stage a thrilling salute.

YOUTH CENTER OPENED
LOS ANGELES – The $350,000 “Lou Costello, Jr., Youth Foundation” is opened to the public by the two donors, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. Thousands of happy youngsters flock to the new play center.

APPLIE BLOSSSOM TIME
WINCHESTER, VA. – In a setting of rustic beauty, “Queen” Jean Lane of Maryland holds court with her retinue of pretty maids-in-waiting, as the Apple Blossom Festival gets underway with colorful parade.

CHICAGO – Something sweet has been added to Milady’s hat. Sugar! Chef John Zenker of the Congress Hotel dishes up an icing-topped millinery creation of novel beauty – and pretty models simply eat it up!

LIMA, PERU – Five Norwegians and one Swede set out in a 40-foot balsa-wood raft for Tahiti and other Pacific islands, to prove a theory that ancient Incans discovered the far-off isles long before Columbus.

BRITISH FILM AWARDS
LONDON – The presentation of the National Film Awards to British stars and producers is a colorful event. Margaret Lockwood and J. Arthur Rank are among those honored.

FILM EXECS GET AWARD
WASHINGTON – Three motion picture theatre officials receive Presidential Certificates of Merit for their efforts during the war. Navy Under-Secretary Sullivan makes the awards.

NATIVES DANCE ON STILTS
CONAKRY, FR. GUINEA – Natives dressed in quaint African costumes dance on stilts during the visit of the French President, Auriol, to Colonial possessions in Africa. Other natives perform strange tribal dances.

PORPOISE ROUND-UP
FLORIDA – Experts from Marineland snare a wily porpoise off the Florida coast. Using a special tail-grabber, the anglers bring back one of the playful mammals and teach him to “stand up” for his lunch!

“FAULTLESS” WINS PREAKNESS
BALTIMORE – The first four horses in the Kentucky Derby come in first in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico – but the order is scrambled. First is “Faultless,” with “On Trust” second, and “Phalanx” third, before 40,000 racing fans. “Jet Pilot” is fourth.

BRITISH FILM LEADER HERE
NEW YORK – J. Arthur Rank, British motion picture producer, arrives on the “Queen Elizabeth” for a U.S. visit. He is honor guest at a World’s Sunday School Assn. banquet; and later he attends a press conference with high American film executives.

SPECTACULAR TOKYO FIRE
TOKYO – Smoke and flames take their toll in the “Ginza,” Tokyo’s colorful shopping district. Several stores are gutted, and the damage is great, as fire sweeps through an entire city block. Firemen are hard pressed.

WORLD’S CHAMPION ”MOM”
CHICAGO – When the Micahel Latorias sit down for dinner at Riccardo’s Restaurant, it takes two chefs and six waiters to handle them all. Eighteen children and Father honor “Mom” on Mother’s Day.

GRAND RIVER DAM OPENED
LANGLEY, OKLA. – The $25,000,000 Pensacola Dam spanning the Grand River and creating a 50,000-acre lake is officially opened by Gov. Roy Turner. Dedication of the huge structure was delayed by the war.

ANIMAL BLESSING IN SPAIN
BARCELONA – The festivity of the Holy Abbott Saint Anthony brings out the throngs in gay attire for the traditional blessing of the animals. Horses receive saintly blessing, as well as dogs – and even a turtle!

PAPAL GUARD TAKES OATH
VATICAN CITY – The Swiss Guard, colorful protectors of Popes, take part in traditional rites on the anniversary of the 1527 Massacre. One by one, the armored guardsmen take the oath of allegiance.

FILM STAR VISITS
DENVER – Yvonne deCarlo, one of the screen’s loveliest, arrives by plane for a visit to the “Mile High City.” She goes to the Children’s Hospital and presents flowers to the happy youngsters.

T.N.T. “KAYOS” STUNT WOMAN
ATLANTA – Helen Howe, daring stunt woman with Jimmy Lynch’s Death-Dodgers, crawls into a chest for a novelty trick – but the dynamite explodes prematurely and, badly burned, she is rushed to the hospital.

NEW YORK – Impressive scenes take place in Central Park, where thousands of new citizens take a mass oath of allegiance. A stirring and inspiring sight for all Americans.

RUNYON CANCER DRIVE OPENS
NEW YORK – Stars of radio and screen take part in ceremonies opening the Damon Runyon Memorial Fund for Cancer Research. A pre-engineered house, to be given to slogan prize winner, now serves as headquarters.

VARIETY CLUB PEACE AWARD
The variety Club presents its Humanitarian Award to former Secretary of State James Byrnes, at Washington ceremony. In Los Angeles, the showmen hold their International get-together in the film capital.

GOLF AIDS YOUTH PROGRAM
WASHINGTON – Supporting Att’y Gen. Clark’s youth guidance program, Gen. Eisenhower, Adm. Nimitz, Gene Tunney, Jack Dempsey, and many other notables, tee off in the Nat’l Celebrities Golf Tourney. Gene Sarazen wins.

VALENCIA – The traditional “Fallas Festival” is a quaint fiesta of novel paper-mache figures representing various phases of city life. Climax comes at night when the grotesque statues are burned.

MONKEY-SHINES AT ZOO
ST. LOUIS – At the Zoological Gardens, the Chimps put on a show that wows the youngsters. Pony riding, bicycle capers and other cut-ups are but a few of the mirth-provoking novelties.
