SOVIET ENVOY RECALLED
NEW YORK – Nikolai Novikov, Russian ambassador to the U.S., leaves by air after his sudden recall by his government. Envoys in other world capitals follow suite, in diplomatic moves connected with the Moscow Conference.

ROYALTY AT OSTRICH FARM
SOUTH AFRICA – Highlight of interest to the royal family during their tour is a visit to an ostrich farm, where the strange birds perform for Their Majesties, and one parts with a tail plume for the Queen.

NEW YORK – Faith ‘n begorra, it’s St. Patrick’s Day, and that calls for a parade up Fifth Ave., with wearers of the green in the line of march, and ardent Hibernians whooping it up from the sidelines.

MARCH FIELD, CAL. – Jack L. Warner, movie executive, receives the coveted Medal of Merit from Gen. “Hap” Arnold. The citation, in recognition of war-time services, is a tribute to the entire motion picture industry.

ATHENS – Huge throngs parade through the streets in a gesture of thanks for intended help from the U.S. Meanwhile, the United Nations commission completes its task of sifting facts in the internecine border strife.

WASHINGTON – Pres. Truman’s special investigator, Paul Porter, returns from Greece with his report.

NEW YORK – Ambassador Lincoln McVeigh arrives by plane to give his slant on Greek affairs to the President.

TALMADGE OUSTED IN GEORGIA
ATLANTA – By a 5-2 decision, the Georgia Supreme Court votes for the ouster of Herman Talmadge as Governor. Acting Gov. M.E. Thompson moves in as the state’s executive and calls for state-wide unity.

PEE-WEE GOLFERS TEE OFF
ORLANDO, FLA. – Ambitions youngsters from all over the U.S. get away in the “Pee-Wee” tourney. They run into the customary trouble along the way. They swing (and miss) – but watch the divots fly!

ARMY “TURTLE” TESTED
FT. BELVOIR, VA. – An inflatable rubber boat, driven by either an electric motor or a gas engine, and capable of carrying four men safely ashore through heavy surf, is demonstrated by Army engineers.

WASHINGTON – The proposed $400,000,000 loan to Greece and Turkey will not lead the U.S. to war, Acting Sec’y of State Acheson tells Rep. Mansfield of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Congress is studying the President’s request for funds and other aid.

MARTIAL LAW LIFTED
PALESTINE – An uneasy truce reigns in the Holy Land following the end of martial law. Barbed wire is torn down as the populace begins a new freedom, but terrorist attacks still continue. Trains are bombed.

FLOODS SWEEP BRITAIN
ENGLAND – Already facing serious shortages due to Winter’s hardships, England is hard hit by another ravage of nature. Floods! The loss in crops and livestock is mounting as flood waters sweep over the lowlands.

ZULU NATIVES HAIL KING
BASUTOLAND – The greatest gathering of South African natives ever seen assembles in the heart of Zulu country for ceremonies hailing the British royal family. Scantily-clad natives give their monarchs a tumultuous welcome.

WASHINGTON – Both FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover and former Ambassador William Bullitt raise their voices against the growing threat of Communism. G-Man Hoover says the “Reds” are an active “fifth column,” while Mr. Bullitt states bluntly that communism must be stopped.

MINE EXPLOSION TAKES TOLL
CENTRALIA, ILL. – Tragedy hovers around the entrance to the coal mine following the disastrous blast which cost 111 lives. Frantic relatives weep and pray as rescue parties go about their grim tasks.

FREE PRESS GROUP REPORTS
NEW YORK – The danger to freedom of the press is lack of responsible ownership and management, says Robert Hutchins, head of a fact-finding commission. He warns that society itself must guard this precious heritage.

SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT!
LOS ANGELES – U-I’s smash hit “The Egg & I” has a gala premiere, attended by Hollywood film notables AND the winning chicken in the “Slick Chick” contest. Fred MacMurray, Jimmy Durante, Ann Blythe, and others are on hand.

MOSCOW – Russia’s Foreign Minister is host at a diplomatic dinner for members of the Big Four Ministers and their wives. Mrs. Molotov receives the guests, and there’s plenty of champagne and vodka to drink.

GRIDIRON IMMORTAL HONORED
COLUMBUS, OHIO – The opening of the new University Theatre coincides with the dedication of the “Chick Harley Scholarship Fund.” Governor Herbert attends the ceremonies honoring the football star of 1917.

HOLY CROSS CAGERS WIN
NEW YORK – Beating Oklahoma by a score of 58-47 in Madison Square Garden, the “Crusader” basketeers win the National Collegiates. The top quintet thrills a huge crowd during the closely-fought East-West playoffs.

MANSION OF MYSTERY
NEW YORK – The amazing saga of the two Collyer brothers, one dead and the other missing, takes a strange turn as police search the Fifth Ave. mansion of the old hermits but find no trace of Langley, the missing brother.

WASHINGTON – As General Eisenhower issues a dramatic warning for the nation to keep its Army strong, new weapons for preserving the peace are shown for Army Week. Supersonic planes, parachute-dropped artillery, huge new mortars and other weapons are seen. A strong America is a peaceful America!

SAYS FILMS FIGHT “REDS”
WASHINGTON – Eric Johnston, film czar, tells the House Un-American Activities Committee that reports of communist infiltration into Hollywood are unfounded. He states that U.S. films are “The No. 1 Hate” of the communists, and adds that “Reds” boycott American motion pictures.

THE GRAND NATIONAL
AINTREE, ENGLAND – “Caughoo” – a 100-to-one shot from Ireland – wins the 103rd Grand national Steeplechase Handicap. A huge throng of 300,000 racing fans sees 23 of 57 starters finish the tough classic, over a muddy course. Several nasty spills add to the excitement.

KING PAUL ON GREEK THRONE
ATHENS – Prince Paul succeeds to the Greek throne following the death of George II, his brother. The new monarch takes the helm during critical times for his country, beset by internal strife and hopeful of aid from the United States.

BIG FOUR AT THE BALLET
MOSCOW – The Big Four Foreign Ministers take time off from peace-treaty conferences and go to a performance of “Romeo & Juliet” at the Bolshoi Theatre, Secretary marshall joins Molotov. Bidault and Bevin in the colorful theatre.

THE CIRCUS IS COMING!
SARASOTA – There’s a hustle and bustle in the winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus – and it means Spring, and the “Big Top.” All the thrills are here to see!

ALL-ASIA CONFERENCE
NEW DELHI, INDIA – Delegates from twenty-one countries, including china, India, Iran, Russia and others, assemble for the Asian Relation Conference. Their purpose: to discuss peace and unity.

WASHINGTON – The mine workers boss lashes out at Secretary Drug during testimony before a Congress labor committee, and he also blames the government for mine disasters. The fiery Lewis issues blunt challenge.

TWO DIE IN TRAIN WRECK
DOWNERS GROVE, ILL. – Two are dead and 38 injured, and a streamliner is a mass of twisted wreckage after freak rail mishap. The speeding train hit an obstruction in the tracks and side-swiped a station.

PHONE STRIKE HITS U.S.
An unprecedented coast-to-coast walk-out of 300,000 telephone workers begins on schedule following break-down of long negotiations. Long lines and non-dial phones are crippled, and the nation faces another crisis.

ZULULAND, SO. AFRICA – The greatest Zulu trek in history takes place as natives converge on Eshowe to pay homage to the King and Queen. A traditional native war dance highlights the impressive display.

RAIN DOUSES TRACK OPENER
JAMAICA, N.Y. – A heavy downpour drenches 37,000 racing fans at the track’s opener, and turns the track itself into a muddy quagmire. There’s a winner – “Fighting Frank” splashing home through the mist and muck.

NEW DELHI – The spiritual leader of India’s Hindus comes from busy peace missions in strife-torn Bengal to confer with Viscount Mountbatten, the new British Viceroy.

DEARBORN, MICH. – Henry Ford is dead! The American auto pioneer and wealthy industrialist dies at the age of 83. The nation mourns the great mechanical genius, whose rich and full life is shown in newsreel clips depicting the highlights of his career.

NEW LONDON, CONN. – Latest-type undersea warships go down during thrilling maneuvers commemorating the 47th anniversary of the first submarine. The newsreel camera records the tense moments during submerging and re-surfacing.

“QUINTS” AS BRIDESMAIDS
CALLANDER, ONT. – The five famous Dionne sisters officiate as bridesmaids at the wedding of their older brother Ernest. The quintuplets, who’ll be thirteen this year, are all decked out in wedding finery for the event.

LAST RITES FOR GREEK KING
ATHENS – Impressive scenes of religious and military splendor mark the funeral rites of the late George II. Preceded by a royal guard, the cortege passes through the streets jammed with thousands of mourners.

WARSAW – Bridges topple and crash into ice-jammed rivers as spring floods sweep Poland, bringing death and destruction. Many vital spans are swept away by the ice floes as the relentless waters crush flimsy timbers.

RIOTING FLARES IN KOREA
SEOUL – Trouble breaks out in the Korean capital, during mass meetings commemorating the nation’s freedom. Communist and Nationalist forces clash, shots are fired, and local police are busy rounding up rioters.

FLAMES GUT NAVY BASE
SAN FRANCISCO – Spectacular scenes of the $500,000 blaze that swept one of the main buildings on Treasure Island, world’s fair site and now a Navy base. Firemen battle the holocaust for hours.

150 DEAED IN TORNADO
OKLAHOMA – Striking with terrific fury, killing 150 and injuring a thousand in five minutes of devastation, a tornado rips a path of death and wrecked homes through Texas and Oklahoma. Incredible scenes of disaster.

PHILADELPHIA – The Navy tests the first of its new ten-place transport helicopters, largest of its type in the world. The novel Piasecki craft lifts a one-ton jeep off the field during its flight tests.

FLORENCE, ITALY – The “Scoppio del Caro” Festival, during which a rocket-propelled “dove” ignites a chariot covered with fireworks, draws thousands to this year’s reenactment of the historic 14th Century spectacle.
