ADDIS ABBABA – On the anniversary of freedom from the Fascist yoke, Haile Selassie leads his people in impressive liberation rites. The Negus reviews crack units of his mounted troops.

OUTBOARDS RACE ON HUDSON
NEW YORK – Vic Scott churns down the choppy Hudson River in his “Flying Scot VI” to win the 15th annual Albany-N.Y. outboard classic. Scott averages over 31 mph for the thrilling 130-mile grind.

MORRIS-ESSEX DOG SHOW
MADISON, N.J. – The Morris & Essex Kennel Club fixture, biggest outdoor event of its kind in the world, draws 25,000 dog fanciers for this year’s contest, with 34 breeds entered. A Bedlington wins top honors.

SOLAR ECLIPSE IN BRAZIL
BOCAYUVA, BRAZIL – U.S. and Brazilian scientists set up camp in the jungle to study and photograph the total eclipse of the sun. Dramatic newsreel films of the breath-taking event show the eerie phenomenon in its entirety.

NEWS BRIEFS FROM TOKYO
In pouring rain, thousands gather at the Imperial Palace to cheer the Emperor, as Japan’s new constitutional government goes into effect. The Tokyo Silk Fair is a gala Oriental showing, with a fashion parade highlighting the event. Mrs. MacArthur it the honor gues.

16,000 SHRINERS PARADE
ATLANTIC CITY – Sixteen thousand Shriners, wearing red fezzes and bright uniforms, march in review during the annual convention, and 100,000 spectators look on. See the novel way some cool off their “achin’ dogs.”

94 DIE IN AIR CRASHES
In a freak accident at La Guardia field in New York, a huge DC-4, speeding for a takeoff, ground loops, bursts in flames and 41 persons perish. Less than twenty hours later another DC-4 crashes at Port Deposit, Maryland, killing 53, the biggest single air tragedy in U.S. history.

MEMORIAL DAY IN ITALY
NETTUNO – The thunder of guns on the Anzio beachhead has died, but remnants of America’s once mighty army in Italy, gather to honor 7,400 fallen comrades, whose graves line the bloody battlefield.

LBAOR EXCHANGE
As 100 displaced Polish girls arrive in Canada by air from Frankfort, Germany to work in rayon mills at Saint Georges de Beauce, 500 Yugoslavs return to their native land taking their goods and chattels.

AUTO SPEED CLASSIC
INDIANAPOLIS – Death rides the track as Mauri Rose of Chicago wins the 500-mile grind with an average speed of 116 miles an hour. Shorty Cantlon, veteran driver, is killed instantly as he crashes against the southwest wall.

PHALANX WINS BELMONT
BELMONT – After losing two of racing’s big crowns, the favored three-year old Phalanx comes through to win by five lengths and pick up a record $78,000 jackpot, the largest on record.

TRUMAN IN KANSAS CITY
KANSAS CITY – The President joins his “buddies” of World War I, during the first post-war reunion of the 35th Division. Mr. Truman walks more than a mile during the parade. Later, at huge rally, where the President spoke, Gen. Eisenhower urges U.S. leadership in saving the world from chaos.

WEATHER ON A RAMPAGE
In many parts of the country, it’s flood; in Sharon, Pa., a freak twister rips through town, wrecking homes and causing five deaths. In Ottumwa, Iowa, swirling flood waters take a heavy toll and leave thousands homeless.

ANNAPOLIS GRADUATION
ANNAPOLIS, MD. – Traditional scenes of stirring graduation rites and full-dress parade by the Midshipmen! Pretty Helen Nylen is the Middie’s “Color Girl.” Following commencement exercises, the new Ensigns toss their hates in the air.

WILLIE TURNESA RETURNS
NEW YORK – Willie Turnesa, winner of the British Amateur championships, and member of the winning U.S. Walker Cup team, gets rousing welcome from his family as he returns on the “Queen Elizabeth.”

BICYCLE BUILT FOR FIVE
SEATTLE – Enroute to a new home in the Northwest, the Parker Family (Papa, Mama and three kiddies) pedal their unique bicycle-built-for-five on the last lap. They came 4,000 miles on the novel vehicle.

THE ENGLISH DERBY
EPSOM DOWNS – Sporting thrills! A 40-to1 shot wins the 18th running of the British Derby. “Pearl Diver” cops the greatest of all horseracing prizes as 400,000 thrilled fans gasp. The favored “Tudor Minstrel” comes in fourth in a classic upset.

CANADA HAILS TRUMAN
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Pres. Truman receives a tumultuous welcome as he arrives for a goodwill visit with Mrs. Truman and daughter Margaret. Viscount Alexander and Prime Minister King greet him at the station, and later he gets a thunderous welcome when he addresses the Dominion Parliament.

DEATH ENDS AIR CARNIVAL
BIRMINGHAM – Death comes to the National Air Carnival. The death of a girl parachute jumper mars the finest air demonstration in city history. Mass formations, stunt flying and trick stuff highlight the dramatic aviation meet.

TEST FIRE-ESCAPE DEVICE
ATLANTA – The latest in escape devices to be developed since the disastrous Hotel Wynecoop fire is demonstrated by the inventor, Orville Brown. The woven web belt and braking device make short shrift of escaping from tall buildings.

INDIA GETS AUTONOMY
NEW DELHI – Britain’s Lord Mountbatten offers Indian leader an unconditional plan for freedom. Members of the All-India Congress, headed by Ali Jinnah and Nehru, hear British offer of dominion status.

BOSSIE’S BONNETS
KENT, WASH. – You’ll chuckle at the sight of contented cows wearing the latest in flower-and-vegetable millinery. Pretty farm lassies do the decorating, in this mirthful bit of farmyard nonsense. It’s a grade-A laugh!

50 DEAD IN AIRLINE CRASH
LEESBURG, VA. – Close upon the heels of two other DC-4 disasters, a Capital Airlines craft lies scattered on a Blue Ridge peak, twisted grave for 50 persons. Weary rescue workers and investigators comb the grisly wreckage.

“TROOPING THE COLOR”
LONDON – The King and his royal guard take part in time-honored ritual – The Trooping of the Color – at Buckingham Palace. Whether soldier or civilian, your spine will tingle at the perfection of this historic military display.

AERIAL “NOAH’S ARK” LANDS
ONTARIO, CAL. – A $100,000 cargo of animals – elephants, monkeys, leopards, bears and assorted birds – arrives at International Field on a cargo plane from Siam. The flying “Noah’s Ark” disgorges its strange collection.

OUSTED PREMIER ARRIVES
NEW YORK – Deposed Hungarian Premier Ferenc Nagy flies to the U.S. to seek American help against the forces of communism which ousted him from power. His wife and children are in exile with him.

MISS PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER
ATLANTIC CITY – Pretty Candy Toxton of New York gets the nod fro the judges as “Miss Press Photographer of 1947.” It was a close race, as you’ll see when you get a glimpse of the lovely contestants.

WORSHAM WINS GOLF OPEN
ST. LOUIS – Lew Worsham, ex-gob from Oakmont, Pa., wins a dramatic play-off in the National Open, when Sam Snead, his opponent, misses a 2 ?-foot putt on the 18th green. It was THAT close!

MANHATTAN THRILL CIRCUS
NEW YORK – Roy Rogers and “Trigger” are hosts to thousands at the Polo Grounds, where Wild West rodeo thriller combined with “Big Top” spectacles provide excitement galore. You’ll be holding your breath!

LABOR BILL IS LAW
SENATE OVER-RIDES TRUMAN VETO
WASHINGTON – The controversial Taft-Hartley labor bill becomes the law of the land, as the Senate over-rides a Presidential veto and passes measure by vote of 68-25. Earlier, the House had voted for over-riding the bill by a 4-to-1 margin, and Pres. Truman had attacked the measure as bad legislation.

OIL TANKER BLOWS UP
WILMINTON, CALIF. – Death and destruction stalk the waterfront, following a mystery blast which wrecks the tanker “Markay” in Los Angeles harbor. Almost 3 million gallons of gas go up in smoke; at least four are known dead and many missing.

P-80 SETS AIR MARK
MUROC, CALIF. – Flashing across the desert at speeds nearing that of sound, a U.S. Army jet fighter captures the world’s speed mark, eclipsing the British record. The souped-up P-80 exceeds 623 m.p.h.

THE “FLYING PANCAKE”
STRATFORD, CONN. – The Navy takes the wraps off the amazing new Vought XF5U, radically-designed flying wing aircraft. Dubbed the “Flying Pancake,” the circular-shaped craft combines high speed with unusual hovering characteristics.

NAVY WINS CREW RACE
POUGHKEEPSIE – Defeating ten rivals in the 45th annual Intercollegiate Rowing Regatta on the Hudson, the Midshipmen oarsmen make sporting history. Thousands watch the classic revival, with the Cornell shell finishing second.

“ASSAULT” TOP MONEY HORSE
NEW YORK – the King Ranch thoroughbred “Assault” wins the Brooklyn Handicap at Aqueduct and becomes the leading money winner of the world. His earnings are now $576,670. Second in the race is “Stymie,” another great money winner.
