200 DEAD IN SPAIN BLAST
CADIZ – Appalling scenes of the explosion of the naval torpedo and mine factory, which brought death to hundreds and injured additional hundreds in the nearby vacation resort. Rescue workers dig in grim ruins for the victims.

NATIONAL AIR RACES
CLEVELAND – Sport flying puts on its roughest and toughest show at the National Air Races, with two records broken and several mishaps. The Bendix race and the Thompson Trophy classic provide speed and thrills, and the stunt fliers stage a breath-taking exhibition.

GIANTS BEAT ALL-STARS
NEW YORK – 52,000 football fans jam the Polo Grounds to see the “pro” Giants rout the touted collegian All-Star gridders by a score of 21-0. Blachard and Davis, the touchdown twins, fail to hit pay dirt in the night tilt.

LABOR DAY PARADE
PRINCETON, IND. – Members of John L. Lewis’ “District 50” are in the line of march as thousands of workers, including coal miners, stage a monster Labor Day rally parade.

LITTLE WORLD SERIES
LOS ANGELES – The American Legion’s “Junior World Series” begins at Gilmore Field, with Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey and other notables on hand to give the kid players a regal send-off.

WESTERN GOLF OPEN
SALT LAKE CITY – A New Western Golf Assn. record is set when Johnny Palmer of North Carolina scores a 270 in the finals of the Western Golf Open. Palmer noses out Locke and Oliver by one stroke.

CIVIL STRIFE IN PUNJAB
INDIA – Indian against Indian – Hindu against Moslem – brings civil strife, rioting and bloodshed to the Punjab. Thousands have died, and millions are homeless. Tragic and pitiful scenes of death and refugees fleeing from ancient hates let loose.

U.S. AID FOR ITALY
GENOA – Italy, striving to avert chaos and desperately short of coat, is cheered by the arrival from the U.S. of 9,500 tons of the much needed mineral U.S. Ambassador Dunn is thanked by Count Sforza.

ENGLAND’S TALLEST MAN
ASFORD, MIDDLESEX – There’s no shortage of one thing in Britain, at least. He’s Ernest Evans, all 7-foot-7 of him and weighing over 350 pounds. He’s a man that the girls can look up to, and do.

FRENCH HAIL “MONTY”
FRANCE – Field Marshal Montgomery gets a warm welcome from the French people and from Pres. Auriol. He sees the new French army in training – and tough training it is – commando style!

TUNA BY THE TON!
OFF NOVA SCOTIA – Thrilling fishing scenes filmed off Nova Scotia. Seven fishermen, using nets, hit a tuna jackpot. Huge 800 lb. monsters are caught, and what a battle it is to bring them aboard!

PHILADELPHIA – The City of Brotherly Love looks to the future, with a scale model of a “Greater Philadelphia” drawing expectant throngs to exhibition. The amazing model affords a glimpse into the future.

TREASURY HEAD TO LONDON
NEW YORK – John W. Snyder, Secretary of the Treasury, sails for England on the “Queen Elizabeth.” Mr. Snyder will attend the meeting of the International Bak and Monetary Fund.

MISS AMERICA CROWNED
ATLANTIC CITY – Pretty hazel-eyed Barbara Jo Walker of Memphis wins the coveted “Miss America” title from a galaxy of talented American beauties. She then heads the traditional boardwalk parade of pulchritude.

TRUMAN LEAVES RIO AFTER GALA PARADE
RIO DE JANEIRO – Pres. Truman takes part in stirring Independence Day ceremonies and reviews a monster parade of Brazil’s armed might, before leaving for home on the “Big MO.” Mrs. Truman wins new friends as the American “good neighbor.”

FREEDOM TRAIN ROLLS
ALEXANDRIA, VA. – The Freedom Train, a streamliner carrying 98 priceless historical documents, including the Bill of Rights, begins its U.S. tour. All Americans can see the Freedom Train and its trainload of democracy.

OBELISK CROSS REPLACED
ROME, ITALY – Replacing the cross on top of the ancient “Lateranense” obelisk at St. Johns (knocked off by the wind) is a perilous and spectacular operation. Skilled steeple-jacks make the dangerous climb.

14 DEAD IN SHIP BLAST
PITTSBURGH – Twisted wreckage, tomb for 14 and possibly seven more, is all that remains of the “Island Queen,” famed Ohio River excursion boat, swept by flames following an explosion at her pier.

P.O.W.’s HOME FROM SOVIET
GERMANY – Hungry and ill-clothed, some of them crippled, former Nazi “supermen” come home from Russian prison camps. At border they are fed and clothed, and then they go home – if they have a home.

AQUAPLANE MARATHON
HERMOSA BEACH – Fighting rough water all the way from Catalina Island, Price Sloan skips across the finish line ahead of a field of thirteen. Sloan’s time for the 44 miles – one hour and a half. Several rough spills occur enroute.

SCOTTISH GAMES HELD
SCOTLAND – The bag-pipers set the stage for the “Cowal Games,” with the royal family on hand to see the kilted lads and lassies participate in highland contests and feats of skill.

INDIA’S HOMELESS MILLIONS
INDIA – Here is a grim and terrifying story of terror and hate let loose in India. Refugees by the millions stream towards safety in friendly areas, as fire and bloodshed take an increasing toll.

BREAD RIOTS IN PARIS
FRANCE – Thousands of unionists stage an orderly demonstration in Paris, protesting the lowered ration of bread and the government’s policy on contracts. There is no bloodshed, but it’s part of the world unrest.

U.S. WHEAT FOR ITALY
NAPLES – Thousands of tons of vitally-needed grain arrive on the “Jericho Victory,” to aid in achieving freedom and self-rule. Ambassador Dunn presents the gift to Premier De Gasperi.

POPE PRAYS FOR PEACE
ROME – Stirring scenes in St. Peter’s Square, where 300,000 devout, including delegates of the Catholic Action group, receive a special blessing and a prayer for world peace from Pope Pius XII.

FRENCH ROLLER DERBY
PARIS – No holds are barred when French roller-skating dare-devils of both sexes get away in a wild and wooly marathon derby. There’s fisticuffs enroute, and plenty of nasty spills take their toll.

KAYAKS RACE IN RAPIDS
AUSTRIA – “Kajac Slalom” is a combination of skiing skill and shooting the rapids. One hundred starters get away but only a few survive the tricky turns and the swirling rapids.

U.N. FOLK DANCES HELD
NEW YORK – Attired in native costumes, dancers from Scotland, Sweden, Mexico, the United States, and other United Nations, take part in colorful folk dancing at Radio City.

HURRICAND RIPS FLORIDA
FLORIDA – First pictures of the Florida hurricane! Wrecked homes, disrupted communications, uprooted trees – and death – follow in the wake of the worst tropical storm to hit Florida in 17 years. Terrific winds lash the resort town in the path of the storm, and then the hurricane cuts across the state to strike again.

RED MENACE SCORED
NEW YORK – In one of the strongest speeches yet made by a U.S. State Secretary, George Marshall calls on the U.N. General Assembly to eliminate the veto power from the Secretary Council. He also scores Russia for failing to help settle the problems of peace.

CITY HAILS FREEDOM TRAIN
PHILADELPHIA – First stop for the Freedom Train! The birthplace of independence hails the document-bearing train as it begins its nation-wide tour. Veterans stage thrilling parade, as the touring train is christened and thousands view priceless documents of U.S. freedom.

PHILADELPHIA – When the “Eagles” and the “Bears” clash before 61,000 sweltering grid fans, the heat is really on. There are trick plays galore, double laterals, and long runs. The Chicago gridders come from behind to win, 13-10.

BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS, UTAH – After many delays and unsuccessful trial runs, John Cobb of London exceeds 400 m.p.h. during a record-breaking speed dash in his streamlined Railton Mobil Special.

AT SEA – Pres. Truman comes home after a triumphal visit in Brazil. During the cruise on the battleship “Missouri,” the President and his family witness the traditional initiation rough-house for “Pollywogs” as the ship crosses the Equator.

INDIA CRISIS MOUNTS
INDIA AND PAKISTAN – On both sides of the troubled Hindustan-Pakistan border, rioting and arson and bloodshed rise daily, as terrified refugees stream towards safety across the border. The vicious cycle of communal strife reaches new highs, with the death toll in the thousands.

ITALIANS TAKE OVER
TRIESTE & GORIZIA – While Italian and Yugoslav demonstrators clash in the newly-created free city of Trieste, Italian troops move up to take over positions held by U.S. units along the troubled Italian-Yugoslav border.

BALTIMORE – The Washington Redskins come to life with a bang in the final quarter, putting over three touchdowns, but it’s not enough to beat the Green Bay Packers. The Packers scored 31 points in the first half of the National League exhibition game.

MARSHALL PLAN SIGNED
PARIS – Sixteen nations sign the final draft of the Marshall Plan, and the U.S. will be asked to back Europe’s recovery to the tune of fifteen billions. Now the plan awaits congressional action here.

BRITON RAPS RED CHARGE
NEW YORK – Hector McNeil, Minister of State, delivers blistering reply to Vishinsky’s war mongering charge and tells United Nations assembly that Russian insistence on having her own way will bring chaos.

ITALY LOSES MORE LAND
BRIGA & TENDA – The Italian flag is lowered, and thousands move out with their belongings, as the Italo-French Peace Treaty goes into effect. The actual signing is shown in Paris.

TYPHOON HITS JAPAN
HONSHU – The toll is dead and injured passes the 5,000 mark in the wake of the disastrous storm which swept over the main Jap island, destroying homes, levees and causing serious floods. Dramatic films show the incredible horror of the typhoon.

ENGLAND – Spectacular pictures of “Operation Longstop,” greatest airborne exercises since the war. Marshal Montgomery watches as 100 airplanes and 3,000 paratroopers engage in thrilling”drops.”

SEATTLE – The Boeing 6-engined jet bomber, XB-47, a new and radical-design craft with novel landing gear and swept-back wings, rolls out for the intensive ground tests prior to its maiden flight.

$5,000,000 PIER FIRE
NEW YORK – Smoke and flames swirl above New York’s waterfront during height of the disastrous Grace Line pier fire. Over 100 firemen are injured. Scenes like these add emphasis to city’s Fire Prevention Week.

WASHINGTON – Pres. Truman, responding to the urgent food crisis abroad, meets with his Citizens Food Committee. Charles Luckman heads the group, which urges the U.S. to save food. In Europe, the specter of starvation hovers over many millions, hit by droughts and crop shortages. In New York, Doug Fairbanks, Jr., head of “CARE”, spurs shipments of parcels to Europe.

NO. WALES, PA. – The Army’s largest helicopter, the Kellett XR-20, completes first test flights. The novel twin-engined “windmill” carries ten men and can be used for a variety of purposes in combat.

NOVEL HAUL OF SALMON
PORT ANGELES, WASH. – Here’s fishing a new way. Seven million cans of salmon, trapped 130 feet down in a sunken freighter, are being siphoned up by skilled teams of divers. It’s a novel salvage operation.

DALLAS – Cardinal Stritch of Chicago arrives for dedication of the Guadalupe Social Center in the heart of the Mexican district. High church dignitaries take part in the impressive rites.
