NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1957 (UE57001)

BOWL GAME ROUND-UP:
On East and West Coast, spectacular parades signal the climax of the football season. In Pasadena, the gorgeous Tournament of Roses Parade, in Miami, the dazzling King Orange spectacle – a prelude of pageantry to the big games.

COTTON BOWL – Dallas, TCU upsets Syracuse, 28-27, despite a fantastic show by the Oranges’ one-man gang, Jimmy Brown.

‘GATOR BOWL – Jacksonville, Georgia Tech routs a savage-fighting Pittsburgh eleven, in a bruising, 21-14 contest.

SUGAR BOWL – New Orleans, Baylor’s Bears topple favored Tennessee, 13-7, cashing in on All-America Johnny Majors’ fumble.

ORANGE BOWL – Miami, Colorado’s Buffaloes stampede to a 20-0 lead, fall behind a roaring Clemson comeback – and score again to win.

ROESE BOWL – Pasadena, Big 10 star Kenny Ploen runs wild, leading Iowa to a 35-19 triumph over Oregon State’s Beavers.

PRO BOWL – In Yankee Stadium, the New York Giants meet the Chicago Bears for the pro grid championship, and rack up an astounding 47-7 upset.

MUMMERS PARADE:
In Philadelphia, 12,000 march in the annual Mummers Parade, filled with festivity and finery, a traditional New Year’s tribute to Momus, King of Mirth.

PRESIDENT ADDRESSEES CONGRESS ON MID-EAST:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The recently assembled 85th Congress convenes in joint session to hear President Eisenhower outline his program to meet the Russian threat in the Near East, calling for economic aid and a “blank check” to use force in the event of Red aggression.

MARCH OF DIMES:
MacDILL A.F.B., FLA. – Famed clown Emmett Kelly entertains a crowd of airmen’s youngsters including 4 year old Marlene Olsen, 1957 March of Dimes Poster Girl, as the anti-polio campaign for this year is launched.

BEGUM AGA KHAN IN U.S.:
NEW YORK – The Begum Aga Khan, wife of the fabulous Indian potentate, arrives in the U.S. to appear as guest of honor at the coming Imperial Ball, and for a series of visits to Veterans’ Hospitals.

RETURN FROM SIBERIA:
JAPAN – 1,025 Japanese held by Russia since World War II return to their homeland after 11 years of captivity, the first to come home under the recent Japanese-Soviet peace treaty.

BARREL JUMPING:
NEW YORK – One of winter’s most exciting, and roughest sports – broad-jumping on ice over a row of barrels. Winner in a contest that features lots of tumbles is defending champ Leo Lebel, clearing 16 kegs to keep his crown.

ALL-EUROPEAN SKI-MEET:
GERMANY – Ski-jumpers from both sides of the Iron Curtain meet in an international contest with politics verboten. Eight nations are represented, with the highest-flying of all done by Finland’s Pentti Uotinen with a 214 feet jump.

STATE OF THE UNION:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower goes before Congress to deliver his long-awaited address on the “State Of The Union,” in which he sees our interests as world-wide and says we must assume leadership in world affairs. We cannot isolate ourselves, he says, but must keep our strength high to deter aggression.

EDEN STEPS DOWN:
LONDON – Sir Anthony Eden, long-time Foreign Minister and protégé of Winston Churchill, resigns as Prime Minister after twenty-one stormy months in office. His successor is Harold MacMillan, Chancellor of the Exchequer.

OIL FIRE:
MONTREAL – The eastern section of the city is black with smoke from a million-dollar oil refinery blaze, billowing into the sky. 34 tank cars and 40,000 gal. of gas cause spectacular fire.

PRINCESS SKIS:
AUSTRIA – Accompanied by two sisters, Crown Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands spends an energetic winter vacation, skiing in the Austrian Alps at Arlberg.

HATS OFF TO SPRING:
NEW YORK – The Millinery Institute of America unveils some charming new bonnets for the coming festive season. Four pretty models display the alluring chapeaux at a special preview.

FISTIC FIREWORKS:
NEW YORK – Youthful aspirants for boxing glory slug it out in first-round matches of the Golden Gloves. Plenty of scrappy action and knock-outs to keep ringsiders on the edge of their seats.

INTERCONTINENTAL DESTROYER:
The Snark, capable of traveling thousands of miles carrying a nuclear war head makes a remote control flight and lands on novel skids after being braked by a parachute.

GALA BENEFIT BALL:
NEW YORK – The begum Aga Khan is guest of honor at a lavish Imperial Ball for the benefit of disabled veterans. A glittering array of personalities helps make it a spectacular event.

MUNITIONS BLAST:
The small town Sezanne, France is rocked by exploding shells and rockets as a munitions train is unloaded. Three were killed, 50 injured and a number of buildings virtually demolished.

POLITICS FRENCH STYLE:
PARIS – Someone didn’t like a speech made at Mendes-France’s Radical-Socialist rally and tossed tear bombs, starting a few fires and lots of commotion at the Palais des Sports.

BATHING SUITS IN THE SUN:
Swim suits on the Bermuda beach show decided versatility in adjustable size, exotic fabrics and novel styling.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

FOOTBALL:
LOS ANGELES – The Pro Bowl game provides color and excitement, with long runs, hefty heaves and some kicking deluxe. Bert Rechichar kicks four field goals to lead the Western all-stars to victory, 19-10.

SKI JUMPING:
BEAR MOUNTAIN, N.Y. – Art Tokle is the popular winner of the Torger Tokle Memorial tournament, named in honor of Art’s hero brother. Some nasty spills keep the onlookers on edge.

PRESIDENT IN “DUST BOWL”:
President Eisenhower, getting a first-hand look at the appalling drought conditions in Texas, Oklahoma and other western states, talks to farmers who have suffered through years of parched lands and returns to Washington with a program of help for the stricken states.

SUEZ CLEARING RUSHED:
EGYPT – Latest film from the strife-torn Middle East, where clearing of the Suez Canal results in freeing of several freighters, and where thousands who fled during the invasion return to Port Said.

FOUR-FOOTED “STARS” ON LOT:
UNIVERSAL CITY, CALIF. – Studio executives and pretty starlet welcome handsome Clydesdale horses of brewery fame to the lot. It’s a red-carpet welcome for handsome steeds and mascot.

AIR FORCE HANGAR FIRE:
McCORD AIR FORCE BASE, WASH. – Four aircraft including a giant Globemaster are destroyed or damaged in pre-dawn hangar blaze that takes big toll in vital planes.

A WINTER’S TALE:
BOSTON – Ice-coated fishing boats back from the banks tell vivid story of sub-zero weather that has gripped much of the northern part of the nation. Can’t see the boats for the ice!

LIGHT-WEIGHT HELICOPTER:
CULVER CITY, CAL. – New bantam “egg-beater” goes for test flight at Hughes plant. The cameraman gets a dizzy ride as small craft displays amazing maneuverability – and amazing safety features.

FIVE-MILE CABLE CAR:
CARACAS, VENEZUELA –So steep are the slopes to the Hotel Humboldt atop Mount Avila that it can only be reached by cable car – whose inaugural run provides a breath-taking panorama of Caracas.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

BOXING:
NEW YORK – Round two in the Golden Gloves brings further fistic fury for fight fans, with young hopefuls tossing leather with plenty of pep. A sizzling knock-out winds up the exciting show.

NEW FLORIDA TURNPIKE:
FORT PIERCE, FLA. – A new 110-mile super highway, the Sunshine State Turnpike, opens for business. The dual road which eliminates 94 traffic lights will save the motorist an hour’s driving time.

INAUGURATION:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Before an estimated crowd of 750,000, President Eisenhower is sworn in for his second term. Auspiciously the sun breaks through as the President and Vice-President are sworn in by Chief Justice Warren. A parade lasting three hours winds through the streets of the capital following the ceremony.

ROUND THE WORLD H-BOMBERS:
CALIFORNIA – Historic milestone in aviation! Three B-52 jet bombers take off and fly non-stop around the world, refueling in flight during the 45 hours flight, pointing up the long reach of our Strategic Bomber Command. Wives and families of the tired but happy crew members greet them on the completion of their epochal mission.

ATOM POWER PLANT:
CALIFORNIA – A ten million dollars reactor nears completion – the first of its kind on the west coast. The plant, which will deliver 5,000 kilowatts is expected to be in operation within a year.

POWDER BLAST KILLS 6 :
OLYMPIA, WASH. – An estimated 3,000 lbs. of dynamite blows up killing 6 workers, and injures a score. It leaves a wide area of devastation and wrecked buildings.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS

SKI JUMPING:
FOX RIVER GROVE, ILL. – Jack Frost plays his “aces” in a thrilling meet at the Norge Ski Club, with top jumpers risking their necks for a large crowd. A breath taking leap of 172 feet wins the event.

BOAT SHOW:
New York’s biggest boat show ever draws huge crowds to look (and get their orders in) at 1957’s line of snappy outboards and luxurious cabin cruisers. Pretty girls make a nautical scene even more dazzling.

“MAD BOMBER” CAUGHT:
The arrest and confession of New York’s “Mad Bomber” ends a 16-year campaign of revenge that baffled police, and injured 15 persons in the explosion of home-made pipe bombs. Scenes show the Bomber, George Metesky, his Waterbury, Conn. Home and workshop, and high points of the case.

U-I CAMERAMAN DIES FILMING GRANARY FIRE:
CHICAGO – A 10-story granary blazes out of control through the night. As half the fire dept. battles to stop it from spreading, the story is covered by Universal Newsreel cameraman Floyd Traynham, whose collapse and death ends a 25-year career.

POLIO MOTHER OF YEAR:
In New York, Mrs. David W. Phillips of Los Gatos, Calif., is named “Polio Mother of the Year,” for her achievement in regaining “almost normal” family life after she and her three children were stricken.

ITALIAN FASHION PREVIEW:
ROME – Buyers from America preview Italy’s latest contributions to Haut Couture, a full line of new outfits for the spring and summer seasons featuring ideas and workmanship that will be reflected in tomorrow’s trends.

INTERNATIONAL SKI THRILLS:
KITZBUEHEL, AUSTRIA – Star ski-birds of eight nations view in the famed Hahnenkamm downhill event, with Olympic champ Toni Sailer blazing down the spill-ridden course to cop top honors. Spectators see some harrowing brushes with death.

MONACO REJOICES:
A daughter is born to Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco, and the principality goes all out to celebrate the arrival.

ROYAL WEDDING:
France’s big social event is the wedding of Dreux of Princess Helene, lovely daughter of the Count of Paris, pretender to the throne and a Belgian count.

POPE VISITS OLD SCHOOL:
Pope Pius XII makes one of his rare appearances outside the Vatican, to visit a school he attended 62 years ago as it celebrates its 500th anniversary.

PRINCESS’ BIRTH HAILED IN MONACO:
Joyous Monagasques hail the birth of a Princess, made official by a notice in Prince Rainier’s own hand. Scenes include the Prince’s own films of the baby and Princess Grace (nee Kelly).

CYPRUS VIOLENCE:
Violence flares anew on Cyprus as angry Turks take revenge for the slaying of a Turk policeman. They set seventy fires in the Greek section of Nicosia before British troops clear the streets.

JEWISH REFUGEES:
GREECE – Nearly 1,000 refugees from Egypt arrive, bringing the number fleeing Nasser’s regime to 10,000 thus far.

HUB CAP THEFTS:
SAN MATEO, CAL. – Local police launch a campaign to check a wave of hub-cap thefts, engraving license plate numbers on hub-caps to identify them.

WINTER CARNIVAL:
ST. PAUL, MINN. – King Winter reigns supreme for a day of seasonal celebration and pageantry. Cold and windy weather fails to mar the gala parade that opens the festival.

STATENDAM ‘BAPTISED’:
HOLAND – The newest Dutch cutry on the sea-lanes, the “Statendam” is named by Princess Beatrix in a unique ceremony.

MRES. IKE AND MOTHERS’ MARCH:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The First Lady of the land is the first to contribute to the 1957 Mothers’ March of Polio.

SPORTS

ICE BOATING:
LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – One of winter’s rarer thrills, ice-boating, on Great South Bay. Brisk wind and flashing sails make for exciting sports as the ice-boats streak over the frozen bay.

SANTA ANITA MATURITY:
ARCADIA, CAL. – 46,000 see a turf thriller in the Santa Anita Maturity, worth $170-,000. The winner, 25-1 shot Spinney!

SERIES OF AIR TRAGEDIES HITS U.S.:
3 air tragedies strike the U.S. within 48 hours. At Pacoima, Cal., a transport and jet fighter collide, crashing into a schoolyard, and killing 8, injuring 77 – most of them pupils. In northern California, a “flamed-out” jet hits a residential area, damaging 35 homes, but killing only 1. The worst came in New York when a Miami-bound airliner crashed and exploded within seconds after take-off in a blinding snow-storm. 101 were aboard. Twenty were killed, 14 more critically injured.

STABLE MABEL, a new one-man helicopter, debuts in Philadelphia. The odd rocket-powered craft demonstrates its controllability with a series of spectacular stunts.

COMMUNION BREAKFAST is attended by 1,200 members of the motion picture industry in New York, after the celebration of Pontifical Mass at St. Patrick’s.

HEARTFUND CAMPAIGN for 1957 is launched in the nation’s capital, as Mrs. Richard Nixon and Dr. Paul Dudley White take part in torch-lighting ceremonies.

CHINESE NEW YEAR is ushered in by San Francisco with traditional festivities including the flamboyant Dragon Parade, and lots and lots of firecrackers.

SPORTS

ROUGH AND TUMBLE RODEO at Palm Springs features some terrific tussles between man and beast, with losses and tosses pretty fairly divided. Rodeo clowns shine, luring enraged Brahmas away from downed riders.

BABY BOBSLEDS IN ALPS:
At Garmisch-Partenkirchen, tiny two-man sleds provide winter sports thrills, streaking down a twisty, glassy track at breath-taking speed, babies in name only – grown-up excitement!
