NATO CALL

IKE INSTILLS NEW HOPE IN FREE WORLD:
PARIS – President Eisenhower speaks of NATO accomplishments and urges new dedication to its principals. “Ike’s” speech precedes accord by NATO nations on missile bases.

WORLD NEWS IN BRIEF:
GIRARD HOME – San Francisco – Private William Girard, convicted killer of a Japanese woman on mortar range, comes home with Japanese wife. His sentence was suspended.

ANNIVERSARY – Kitty Hawk, N.C. – The 54th anniversary of the world’s first powered flight is marked with ceremony at monument enshrining Wilbur and Orville Wright.

LANDING VEHICLE – The Navy’s newest amphibious landing vehicle, a 100-ton monster that can carry the heaviest armored vehicles ashore, takes a bow in Washington.

SUBMARINE ESCAPE – England – A new “built-in breathing” system of escaping from a submarine is demonstrated by the British Navy.

TRANSFER AT SEA – A sick crewman is transferred from the U.S. submarine Bergall to another Navy vessel in rough seas.

SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS:
SAILFISHING – A big fleet of fishing boats sets sail for the 23rd annual Metropolitan Miami Fishing Tournament. Plenty of “beauties” are hooked, and one prize 56-pounder by a blonde beauty who’s “Princess” of the tourney.

IN MEMORIAM:
President Magsaysay of Philippines dies in plane crash. Millions mourn passing of Aga Khan.

SPOTLIGHT ON ROYALTY:
Queen Elizabeth’s gala tour of New World. Royal heir born in Monaco.

TERROR REIGNS ENDED:
New York’s “Mad Bomber” George Metesky is captured by police after a 17 year rule of terror. Russia master spy, Col. Abel, is seized by Government agents in Brooklyn.

SHRINKING WORLD:
Aviations records topple. The Air Force flies round the world in 45 hours sets new speed and distance records between the U.S. and Argentina.

HURRICANE DISASTER:
The first Hurricane of the season smashes inland along the Gulf Coast, wreaking terrible tragedy in Louisiana. The town of Cameron is destroyed. Over 300 perish.

MIRACLE DELIVERANCE:
A boy in a well captures the attention and prayers of a nation. The graphic record of little Benny Hooper’s 24-hour ordeal, in New York and his hair-breadth rescue.

SPACE AGE ARRIVES:
The Age of Space dawns on mankind as Russia launches the first artificial satellites. America’s own satellite attempt is a flaming disaster. Russia’s space dog is alone in the skies as Ike and other Western chiefs of state gather in Paris for new NARO strategy talks.

PRESIDENT OPENS FESTIVE SEASON:
President Eisenhower sets the keynote for national observances of the holiday season as he addresses the nation, and then lights a 60-foot spruce. 9,000 gleams of light transform it to a symbol of the season, the season of Peace of Earth, Good Will Toward Man.

FRENCH CARRIER:
France’s newest carrier, the Clemenceau, nears completion in the graving dock at Brest.

PVT. TEDDY BEAR:
Pvt. Teddy, former mascot of the 6th Infantry in Germany, arrives in New York, headed for the zoo.

SHINTO RITES:
In San Francisco, old Shinto rites mark the christening of Japan Air Lines new trans-Pacific DC-7.

CARDINAL IN ALASKA:
Cardinal Spellman, on his annual trip to the Orient, visits G.I.’s in Alaska.

JET AIRLINER:
America’s first commercial airliner makes its maiden flight in Washington, beginning a year of tests.

LIDO OPENING:
Traditional Paris gaiety and brilliance marks the opening on the Champs Elysee of a new and piquant show. Everyone, from Dali to the Duke of Windsor is there to cheer oh-so Parisian dancers.

LIONS RALLY TO CLINCH TITLE:
In San Francisco, the 49ers surge to a 20-7 half-time lead over the Detroit Lions, sparked by Y.A. Tittle’s passing. But in one of the pro football’s most sensational games, the Lions rally, claw their way from behind to achieve a spectacular victory and clinch the League’s Western championship!
