GAS BLASTS RIP RENO:
2 die, 55 are injured as a series of explosions from a leaking gas main rock a four-block area in Reno, Nev. Fires in the wake of the blasts consume an entire section of the town, as units from all parts of the state are rushed in to fight the flames.

JOINT MANEUVERS:
Off San Diego, the Italian cruiser joins U.S. fleet units for the first Italo-American joint maneuvers in U.S. waters in 30 years.

IKE AND IRAQ PRINCE:
At the White House, President Eisenhower greets Prince Abdul Illah of Iraq, here to discuss events in the Middle East.

AIRE PROSPECTING:
Over New England, a helicopter fitted with magnetic detectors and automatic recorders prospects from the sky, the easy way.

IKE CITES HOOVER:
In Washington, D.C., President Eisenhower presents a citation to ex-President Hoover for his leadership in governmental reorganization.

NEW AMBASSADOR:
In Rome, America’s newly appointed envoy, James D. Zellerbach, presents his credentials to President Gronchi.

SPECTACULAR SLEIGH-RIDE:
One man and one kid-style sled, and a terrific spectacle of speed and spills – the natural result when a man too large and a sled too small take on a curvy, glassy, tricky bob-sled run!

Sunny Spain is the setting for a showing of Paris’ new Spring finery. Models and modes flew in for the gala showing of the latest French styles.

POWER PLANT TROUBLE MARS SEA-WOLF TRIALS:
Following the first sea trials of the Navy’s second atomic submarine, the Sea Wolf, the announcement that it’s power plant may have to be replaced reveals a major set-back in the Navy’s atomic development.

COFFEE QUEEN:
Colombia, one of the world’s chief coffee-growing countries, chooses a Coffee Queen in gala ceremonies that wind up with a hilarious bull-fight, in the Plaza del Toros.

EDINBURGH IN ANTARTIC:
The Duke of Edinburgh visits the Antarctic during his world tour, boarding a British whaling ship, and being greeted ashore by a delegation of penguins.

SCOUTS IN THE NEWS:
In Washington, D.C., the Boy Scouts of America present a report of their year’s activities to the President, their honorary leader. The Cub Scouts honor F.B.I. chief J. Edgar Hoover, making him an honorary member.

HIGH STYLE UNDER WATER:
At Florida’s Weeki Wachi Springs, graceful mermaids model new swim styles in an eye-appealing under-water ballet. Crystal clear waters show their grace and beauty to perfection.

ISRAEL-U.S. BASKETBALL:
In New York, the Israeli Olympic Basketball team begins an 11-game U.S. tour with a stunning victory over their host team from Yeshiva University, 61-59.

GOLDEN GLOVES:
New York City amateurs set out on the road to fistic glory. Slam-bang crowd-pleasing action marks the bouts at Sunnyside Gardens, with some comic touches to round out the show.

REDSTONE MISSILEE IN PRODUCTION:
DETROIT – First films of the famed Redstone missile in production. The 70 foot rocket, with combat warhead, is now in quantity production, one answer to criticisms charging a lag in our missile program.

ISRAEL DEMONSTRATIONS:
In Tel Aviv, 100,000 march in protest against the U.N. order to evacuate the Gaza Strip.

NEW ATOM PLANT:
Near Chicago, a new atomic power plant, a pilot model for future commercial plants, is shown in operation.

PHOTOPLAY AWARDS:
In Beverly Hills, the annual Photoplay Awards are made. Among those honored, George Nader, and Rock Hundson.

PLEA FOR TOLERANCE:
Ed Sullivan delivers a plea for Tolerance as National Brotherhood Week begins.

WESTMINSTER DOG SHOW:
In New York, 2,600 canine aristocrats vie for honors in the Westminster Dog Show. Winner of the coveted Best In Show award, an Afghan bound – for the first time.

BASKETBALL’S TOP SCORER:
College basketball scoring records topple as Columbia meets Penn, and the Lions’ Chet Forte scores a record 45 points. Only 5’9”, he tops ‘em all.

McCALLEN WELCOMES ROTARY CHIEF:
A gala civic welcome for Rotary International President Paul Lang as he visits McCallen, Texas.

SUEZ NEAR OPEN:
President Eisenhower cuts short his winter vacation in Georgia to return to Washington in the face of the Israel-Egyptian impasse. Meanwhile, a small Egyptian vessel makes its way the entire length of the canal. Completion of clearing is prevented by the political situation.

ROYAL REUNION:
ENGLAND – Queen Elizabeth emplanes for Portugal, where she will be reunited with the Duke of Edinburgh from whom she has been separated for four months while he was on a global tour.

BATTTLE HYMN PREMIERE:
MARIETTA, OHIO – The home town of Col. Dean Hess goes all out to show him how proud they are of him. The man whose life story is told in the Universal-International film is accompanied by Rock Hudson and stars of the film in a round of functions before the picture is unveiled for the first time at the local theatre.

FASHION AND SOCIETY:
PALM BEACH, FLA. – The home of Mrs. Horace Dodge is the back drop for the meeting of society, show people and designers for the most chic beach wear, not mention dresses that quicken the pulse.

IT’S FOR THE BIRDS:
HOLLAND – Hundreds of thousands of starlings winging south from Scandinavia settle in Holland for the winter. The din is unbelievable and the battle for perches is bloody.

NEW YORK CITY:
David and Goliath of tennis slug it out in pro tennis as Pancho Gonzales and Ken Rosewall tangle in their eighth match. This time towering Gonzales won in straight sets.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COL.:
Spectacular ski-jumping against the magnificent back drop of the Rockies. High flying Finns set some impressive marks and with perfect form.

QUEEN VISITS PORTUGAL:
On the occasion of a state visit by Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, Portugal goes all out to honor the British monarch. A lavish parade is followed by ceremonies on the field where in the 12th century Britain aided Portugal to drive out Moorish invaders.

MISS BERLIN CHOSEN:
Over 100 lovely frauleins parade in a competition for the crown of Miss Berlin. The winner, beauteous Victoria Berger, will represent the city in the “Miss Germany” contest.

ITALY EXCAVATIONS:
First films of a recently discovered ultra-swank hideaway for the social set of Julius Caesars Rome. Complete with 200 ft. heated swimming pool, it was buried by volcanic eruption.

MODERNISTIC PLAYGROUND:
Monterey, Cal., shows off an untra-modernistic playground with contraptions out of this world, designed from the kids’ viewpoint, for the ultimate in fun.

“BIG HILL” SKI JUMP:
The 26th annual ski-jump competition at Leavenworth, Wash., draws top talent for the Pacific Northwest’s big event. U.S. champion Ansten Samuelstuen tops the field with a 275 foot leap.

GOLDEN GLOVES FINALS in New York is highlighted by a sensational heavyweight slug-fest. Big Nathaniel Dixon slugs it out toe-to-toe with Luke Clark and batters his way to a thrilling TKO triumph.

MOTOR BOAT SHOW:
At Asbury Park, N.J., addicts who are counting the days till they can slide their own craft into the water, flock to an exhibit of the latest water craft.

IKE SPEAKS TO MIDDLE EAST:
In a special beamed to the Middle East, marking the Voice of America’s 15th birthday, President Eisenhower restates American foreign policy aims, and warns against international communism.

NATO MANEUVERS, spearheaded by the U.S. 6th Fleet, present a mighty show of naval strength, with latest jets from the giant Forrestal, and guided missiles utilized in mock combat.

4 BLACK LAMBS, quadruplets, and extremely rare, are raised by Elaine Knudsen, 12-year old 4H girl of Petaluma, California. A four-way bottle-feeding job, but the quads are thriving.

FASHIONS BY BALMAIN are shown in Paris, a new spring collection titled Jolie Madame de Paris. This year, the key work is suppleness – exemplified in fabric, line, and contour.

ROCK HUDSON is honored at a reception in the Korean Embassy in Washington for his portrayal of Col. Dean Hess, savior of thousands of Korean warr waifs, in U-I’s new production “Battle Hymn.”

SANTA ANITA HANDICAP:
The 20th running of the turf classic at Arcadia, Cal., sees a terrific homestretch battle for the $140,000 purse. Cornhusker tops favored Holandes 2d and Spinney by half a length.

A.A.U. TRACK MEET at Madison Square Garden features top competition on the boards. Highlight of several thrilling events shown is the mile race, where Ron Delany blazes in a sprint finish that leaves Dwyer and Tabori trailing and sets a new meet record of 4:07.

TENSION EASES IN EGYPT-ISRAEL DISPUTE:
As the leaders of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Lebanon meet in Cairo to map strategy in the continuing dispute with Israel, tension is eased with Israel’s agreement to withdraw her troops from Gaza and Aqaba. In Washington, President Eisenhower holds wide-ranging conversations with France’s Premier Guy Mollet who is credited with aid in mediation efforts.

POPE PIUS XII puts the seal of approval on clinical use of anaesthesia during an audience in which he receives 1,000 prominent physicians from all parts of the world.

BRITISH A-BOMB test in Australia is a dramatic re-assertion of our ally’s claim to status as a major power in the atomic world – second to none in technological development.

RUSSIAN ZOO, in Leningrad, boasts as its star attraction a baby elephant, 180 lbs., who’s fussed over lovingly by Mama – in tender and amusing scenes that would be the same anywhere in the world.

RED CROSS:
In Washington, President Eisenhower appeals to the nation to lend its support during the 1957 fund drive of the Red Cross.

KINGS POINT GRADUATION:
76 Cadet-Midshipmen receive B.S. degrees and officers’ tickets in graduation ceremonies at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

GOOD-WILL is the mission of an unofficial Ambassador, U.S. industrialist A.N. Spanel who visits the home of Lafayette in France – keeping alive a long tradition of Franco-American friendship.

CARNIVAL ARTISTRY IN ITALY:
VIAREGGIO, the Italian town that puts on the most spectacular pre-Lenten show in all Europe, outdoes itself this year, with the hugest, most fantastic array of animated make-believe floats ever – each one built of tons of paper-mache, during months of devoted labor – to produce on breathless, side-splitting day of Carnival.

ISRAEL ENDS MID-EAST DEADLOCK:
A major obstacle to peace is removed as the Israeli parliament decides, amid violent public argument to evacuate the Gaza-strip and the Gulf of Aqaba. In the United Nations, Foreign Minister Golda Meir announces Israel’s compliance with the General Assembly’s directive.

NIXON IN AFRICA:
Vice President and Mrs. Richard Nixon visit Rabat, Morocco, beginning a 22 day, 18,000 mile good-will tour of Africa.

PRESIDENTS MEET:
On the border between Colombia and Venezuela, the presidents of the two nations meet in a unique gesture of friendship.

PRINCESS CAROLINE is presented to the people of Monaco by proud parents Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, amid public rejoicing.

IKE & STUDENTS:
33 high school students representing 33 foreign nations are greeted by the President at the White House.

MOVIE AWARDS:
Gov. Goodwin Knight presents the Look Magazine Award to Elmer Rhoden as Theatre Man of the Year. In Los Angeles, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association makes its annual awards, honoring U-I’s widely acclaimed “Battle Hymn.”

A fabulous new turf record is set by Johnny Longden at Santa Anita as he boots home his 5,000 winner!

SPRING TRAINING:
First in series of reports on resuming diamond activity – spring training in Florida.
