BRITISH AIR CRASH KILLS 22:
22 perish with the crash of turbo-prop airliner into a British housing development near the Manchester airport, including a mother and infant in one of the houses struck.

IKE CRUISES TO BERMUDA:
Aboard the U.S.S. Canberra, Ike takes advantage of bright sun to bake out his persistent cold, and attends St. Patrick’s Day services with the crew.

POPE GREETS VICE-PRESIDENT NIXON:
VP Nixon visits Rome, paying an official call on Italy’s President Gronchi. Later, he and Mrs. Nixon receives a private audience with Pope Pius XII.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE:
New York observes St. Patrick’s Day with it’s traditional parade down 5th Avenue. On the reviewing stand, Dublin’s Jewish Lord Mayor Briscoe.

PHILIPPINES MOURN MAGSAYSAY:
The people of the Philippines mourn Ramon Magsaysay, their president, whose death in air crash ended the career of an outstanding leader of the free world.

PUMAS VISIT THE ZOO:
In Amsterdam, three baby pumas visit the zoo. On the outside looking in, an odd twist, they meet all kinds of new animal friends, big and litt.e

SPORTS

NEWS RELAYS:
Indoor track thrills at the Chicago Daily News Relays, with spectacular feats by miler Ron Delaney, vaulter Don Bragg, and a host of others.

SPORTSMAN’S SHOW:
Chicago outdoors’ fans see a veritable circus of sport, with events ranging from death-defying daredevil stunts to superb field dogs showing their skills.

SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE:
A series of earthquakes lasting 48 hours brings grim echoes of the disaster of 1906 to San Francisco. Numerous fires are started, and millions of dollars of damage caused by the tremblers, which shattered bridges and buckled highways within a 150 mile radius.

NEW TENSION IN MID-EAST:
The precarious mid-East settlement is strained as Egypt sending a civil administrator into the Gaza Strip, over Israeli protests. U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammerskjold discusses Suez with President Nasser, as oil begins to flow again from Syrian pipelines, and new refugees arrive in Israel.

HAIR DO’S AND DON’TS:
In Chicago, leading hair stylists from all over the country show off the newest styles, and tricks of the trade, with the aid of a bevy of lovely models.

SPORTS:
GYMNASTS – Top-flight gymnasts from 23 schools take part in the National Collegiate Gymnastic Championships at Annapolis. Team honors go to Penn State, thanks to Armando Vega’s brilliant performances.

NCAA BASKETBALL – North Carolina topples the favored Kansas Jayhawks at Kansas City, Mo., with a controlled-ball strategy that shackles the Kansas five’s fast-break game. Final score, 54-53.

BULLFIGHT – Spain’s top matadors show their steel nerves and proficiency with cape and sword in the spring corrida at Valencia. But the big brave bulls give as good as they get – splitting the honors with the toreros.

ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS:
A galaxy of stars and Hollywood notables crowds Hollywood’s Pantages Theater for the 29th annual Academy Award ceremonies. Among those receiving the ultimate accolade of filmdom are Dorothy Malone, Anthony Quinn, Yul Brynner, and Ingrid Bergman.

MIDWEST BLIZZARDS:
A 3-day blizzard blankets the Great Plains – a wintry ordeal for 5 states in which at least 38 perish, as hundreds of cars are marooned, and a crack transcontinental train buried – isolated with over 200 aboard, for days.

NEW EUROPEAN PACT:
In historic ceremonies in Rome, the 6-nation European Common Market Plan and atomic pool receive final assent of member nations, beginning an epochal experiment in Continental unity.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY:
King Paul and Queen Frederica lead an enthusiastic parade commemorating the anniversary of Greek Independence. The small but effective modern army makes an impressive appearance as it passes in review.

SUEZ CANAL CLEARED:
The last major obstacle in the Suez Canal, the tug Edgar Bonnet, is cleared from the channel, five months after it was scuttled by Egyptian forces. Troublesome questions of tolls and control remain, but the key waterway is open.

WHITE HOUSE EVENTS:
The President bestows Yougn American Medals on two outstanding youths, Edmund Zernach of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and William Steiger, of Oshkosh. Later, Ike plays host to Dublin’s Jewish Lord Mayor Robert Briscoe.

SPORTS:
HALF-PINT HOTRODS – San Francisco tots, in the 5-12 year bracket, scorch around a sand-lot track in midget racers powered by 2 hp. Lawn-mowers motors. Twenty torrid heats at a terrific 20 mph!

6-DAY BIKE RACE – Nostalgic memories of the Roaring 20’s are revived as champion bicyclists compete in Chicago. A new generation of fans cheers them through “jams” and sprints to the thrill-packed final lap.

GERMAN VETS AT U.S. PARATROOP SCHOOL:
In Germany, World War II comes full circles as German veterans of the conflict receive refresher training at the U.S. 11th airborne Division’s jump school. Learning modern methods, they’ll form cadres for the newly reactivated West Germany Army.

IKE’S DAY:
Ike boosts the Cancer Crusade, welcoming 6-year old Joyce deZeller, herself a cancer victim, to start the national campaign for cancer research funds. Also at the White House, Ike plays host to members of the National Press Photographers, posing for snapshots by the score.

MISS PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER:
In Washington, D.C., the National Press Photographers Association holds its annual beauty pageant, and 19 photogenic lassies help prove once again that one picture is worth 1,000 words.

HANDY HELICOPTERS aid French forces in Algeria. In terrain inaccessible to any other means of transport, the whirlybird ferries in troops and light equipment, then hovers low to haul jeeps out of mudholes.

SPORTS:

EAST-WEST BASKETBALL – College all-stars stage a spectacular court contest before 14,000 fans. East wins 73-63 in a fast-paced thriller, starring Len Rosenbluth, Dick Duckett and Charlie Tyra for the winners.

GRAND NATIONAL – A spectacular triumph for Sundew in the Steeplechase at Aintree, one of the turf’s greatest thrillers and great ordeals. Less than half the 35 starters finish the 30 jumps and 4 ? mile course, but Sundew stays in front all the way – a sensational feat.

TORNADOES AND SNOWS BATTER SOUTHWEST:
Tornadoes and heavy snowstorms take a toll of at least 21 lives, with over 800 injured in Texas, Oklahoma, and the Rocky Mountain States. The Dallas area is strewn with debris of shattered houses, and cars thrown about like playthings – an estimated 4 million dollars damage in the tornadoes wake.

POLIO DRIVE FOR PROTECTION – Protection, Kansas, lines up for its polio shots. An Indian medicine man and his young son join towns-folk and tots.

GOOD NEIGHBOR POLICY is in the news in Washington, D.C., as Brazilian staff chief Gen. Octavio Mazza is welcomed on an official visit, and the Pan-American Society of the U.S. presents President Eisenhower with its Achievement Medal.

EASTER SEAL CAMPAIGN is launched in Washington, D.C., by Mrs. Eisenhower who receives an Easter Lily bouquet from 5 year old Walter Bill Cash.

FASHION PARADE:
Spring fashion by leading British designers are shown in New York, key-noting “London Week” in the U.S. The emphasis is on eye-appeal, light and cheerful styles for spring.

PENTAGON CHANGES:
In top-level personnel shifts in the Pentagon, Gen. Nathan Twining becomes the first airman to hold the top military post as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a new Secretary of the Navy is sworn.

THE CIRCUS IS BACK!
The circus is back, as usual the biggest most spectacular show ever – with clowns, daredevil aerialists, and amazing animal acts keeping the action and entertainment going at a brisk pace. Dazzling new acts and all the old familiar favorites.

The Air Force’s newest and biggest aerial work horse wears skis. Task Force Sllide, in Minnesota, tests the 62 ton “Hercules” cargo carrier with the biggest aircraft skis ever – 1800 pounds each!

PARADE IN SPAIN:
Spanish forces parade in Madrid on the 18th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. Prominent are U.S. tanks and jets.

FRENCH HELICOPTERS, a new design powered by turbo-jet engines, soar over New York’s skyline. They’ll be manufactured in the U.S.

MIDGET CONVENTION in Reno takes over the town – and there’s nothing small-time about the “little people,” who do it all in a big way.

BAKERS’ DOZENS of delicious rolls for Dutch youngsters highlight the Lenten season with a traditional symbolic feast for thousands of kids.

“YOUNG STRANGER” HAS DEBUT:
In New York, “The Young Stranger,” has a glittering double debut, with a distinguished list of guests on hand to hail the new picture and its star, James MacArthur – son of Helen Hayes – in his screen debut.

GOLF “MASTERY”:
AUGUSTA, GA. – Blasting out of a bunker and into the cup on the 18th, Doug Ford of Yonkers holes out with an amazing 66 to win the Masters Golf tourney. Ford trailed Sam Snead by three strokes beginning the final round.

DIVING QUEEN DEBUTS:
Los Angeles salutes Pat McCormick in her professional debut. Pretty as a picture and an Olympic champ, Pat stars in a magnificent one-gal show.

PARIS HAILS QUEEN:
Paris receives Queen Elizabeth’s 3-day state visit with spectacular pageantry and wild popular enthusiasm. One highlight of the first evening is a colorful pageant staged on both banks of the Seine, for a span of 5 miles, to regale the royal visitor.

ROMAN LUXURY as of 2,000 years ago is unearthed in excavations at Herculaneum, sister city to Pompeii, which bare amazingly well-preserved buildings and artifacts – among them a Roman bath put to use by some pretty visitors.

‘COPTER TRANSPORT:
The helicopter joins the ranks of air transports as the new twin-rotor Vertol goes into service in Philadelphia. The last word in comfort and convenience for a 19 passenger payload.

OIL TO ELATH:
A U.S. tanker delivers a cargo of oil to Elath, Israel’s port on the Gulf of Aqaba – fulfilling America’s pledge to help Israel establish the right of innocent passage through the gulf.

HATS OFF TO SPRING, in West Berlin. 3 enterprising Frauleins choose a scenic setting in the park to set up an eye-appealing showing of new spring hats, ranging from saucy straw skimmers to floral frou-frous.

A.A.U. BOXING:
BOSTON, MASS. – Fistic fireworks in the Garden, for the finals of the National AAU championships. The busy ref stops the two bouts highlighted for action and excitement, the first won by Vince Shomo of New York, and the second by Gene Greshaw of Michigan.

60 NATIONS JOIN IN WORLD TRADE FAIR:
In New York, 60 nations join in the first United States World Trade Fair, a vast international exposition that showcases industrial goods, crafts, and agricultural products from all over the globe, and attracts record throngs to the Coliseum.

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, asked by a Japanese envoy to support Japan’s plea to stop planned H-bomb tests in the Pacific, replies with a statement of support for Britain’s policy.

CULINARY ARTS are on display in Chicago, a dazzling display of superb skill in cooking and decoration by chefs and party cooks. One highlight, a “lobster symphony.”

PRINCESS MARGARET of Holland, dedicates a memorial to the Netherlands’ 3500 merchant seamen who lost their lives during World War II – a 148 foot harbor-side edifice.

HAT FASHIONS inspired by Spring – and showing a touch of spring fever – are shown in Vancouver. The group includes the biggest hat in the world, closely rivaled in giddiness and gayety by all the others.

SPORTS

KIDS’ BOXING at Annapolis, an annual event at the Naval Academy, brings out a game crew of Navy juniors – who swing into action with the real navy spirit, firing heroic salvos and broadsides, going down with flying colors.

WHITE WATER WIZARDS challenge the boiling rapids of the surging MacKenzie River. Over 100 motley craft, manned by daredevil oarsmen, defy streaming currents, and eddies that stall craft in mid-current, an amazing sight to see.
