100 cities across the country are hit by simulated atomic air raids in the 4th annual nation-wide civil defense drill. In Washington, President Eisenhower is evacuated from the White House by helicopter, and in key “target” cities, streets are deserted as hundreds of millions take shelter.

50,000 Boy Scouts gather at Valley Forge, Pa., for their 4th National Jamboree. A day of worship and dedication opens the youth group’s encampment.

En route home from the Commonwealth Conference in London, India’s Prime Minister Nehru and his sister Madame Pandit are guests of Queen Juliana in the Netherlands.

CHICAGO FLOODS:
A day-long torrential downpour wreaks millions of dollars’ damage on Chicago and the surrounding area, cutting off public utilities and washing out foundations of suburban homes.

NEW STAR GREETED:
Lovely Swiss movie star Liselotte Pulver is greeted by U-I executives as she arrives in Los Angeles. She’ll play a leading role in the film version of Erich Maria Remarque’s recent bestseller, “Also Time To Love.”
