IKE WARNS OF COST RISE IN MISSILE RACE:
OKLAHOMA CITY – In a major address to the nation, President Eisenhower proposes a “very considerable” increase in defense spending to counter recent advances by Russia in the missile race.

TRUMAN HONORED:
In New York, former President Harry S. Truman receives a plaque honoring him for his efforts in the cause of civil rights.

NEW FRENCH SUB:
France launches a new conventional sub, and announces that her first atomic sub is now under construction.

MARCH OF DOLLS:
In New York City, a “Treasury of Hand-Dressed Dolls” is showcased in a March of Dolls for the benefit of the March of Dimes.

‘COPTER AND STEEPLE:
Sceptics scoff at a plan to remove a damaged steeple by helicopter, in Austria – and what d’ya know? They’re right!

FASHION PARADE:
In Harrison, New York, the latest in coats for colder climates are presented, a timely showing of new and old favorite fabrics and colors.

JET FLIES 480 M.P.H. TO ARGENTINA AND BACK:
The Air Force “shows the flag” with a record shattering non-stop no-refueling flight from Massachusetts to Buenos Aires, at 480 m.p.h., and a spectacular return hop to Washington, D.C. The big jet tanker plane is piloted by Air Force Vice Chief of Staff General Curtis LeMay.

B-52’s SHOW USAF POWER IN ARGENTINE FLIGHT:
Six massive B-52 jet bombers fly the length of the hemisphere and back non-stop, averaging more than 500 m.p.h. for the 21 hour flight – and impressive demonstration by the Strategic Air Command of its global striking capacity.

LLOYDS OF LONDON moves to a new home, and the tradition shattering event for the historic maritime insurers is marked by Queen Mother Elizabeth’s speech of dedication.

ROLLER SKIING:
From Holland, the newest sports craze – skiis with wheels! Just the thing for those dull snowless days, as a bevy of pretty Dutch maids demonstrate.

CAPITOL HIGHLIGHTS:
Secretary of State Dulles and Adlai Stevenson, newly designated special consultant on foreign policy, confer on the upcoming NATO meeting. President Eisenhower swears in M.I.T. head James Killian as his new top-level science adviser.

IKE IN AUGUSTA:
President Eisenhower arrives in Augusta, Georgia, for a golfing holiday. One highlight of his visit, the presentation of the “Eisenhower Cracker Barrel” to the National Golf Club.

PRINCETON-YALE:
Upset in the Ivy League game of the week, as Yale’s eleven topples the Princeton Tigers. Yale’s aerial attack turns the trick to wrap up a 20-13 victory.

OHIO STATE-IOWA:
Hawkeyes and Buckeyes in a razzle-dazzle see-saw battle for Big Ten honors. Ohio State stages a spectacular fourth period rally to come from behind and win 17-13.

NOTRE DAME-OKLAHOMA:
The upset of the season. Notre Dame, a 17-point underdog meets the Sooners – riding college football’s longest unbeaten streak, and the Irish fight ‘em to a stand still, 7-0.

SALUTE TO THANKSGIVING:
The “Singing Sergeants” of the United States Air Force offer a special musical salute to Thanksgiving, with a rendition of a favorite hymn.

MISSILE SPEED-UP is announced by Defense Secretary McElroy, after a 2-hour conference with Ike at the President’s Augusta, Georgia golfing retreat.

GERMAN PRESIDENT:
Dr. Theodore Heuss, West German chief of state, is welcomed in Rome with full diplomatic honors. It’s the first Italian visit by a German ruler since Wilhelm II.

TRAIN WRECK at Medford, Massachusetts, a tragedy that might have been avoided. A Boston bound train leaves the rails, plunges 11 feet from an overpass. 2 die, 23 are seriously injured.

SKY’S LIMIT IN STYLES at a British showing where sports and evening wear alike are pointed toward outer space. One moony maiden even carries a sput-pup!

FRANCO-U.S. CRISIS:
French Foreign Minister Pineau meets with Secretary of State Dulles, as popular indignation mounts in France over U.S. arms shipments to Tunisia.

SPORTS

JUDO MEET:
In Montreal, France challenges Canada in a judo competition. Burly grapplers meet in the squared circle for an unusual, exciting contest.

LIONS v. ‘49ers:
Pro gridiron thrills, 60,000 fans turn out in Detroit to see Bobby Layne spark the Lions to a 31-10 victory over the San Francisco eleven.

U.S. WELCOMES KING OF MOROCCO:
King Mohammed of Morocco arrives in Washington aboard the President’s personal plane, to be greeted with full honors at National Airport. The North African monarch will discuss U.S. air bases in Morocco with Ike.

EXPOSITION PARIS:
The catty side of Paris – blue-blooded felines on parade. Sleek Siamese and imperious Persians – a purr-fectly splendid show.

NEW TREES FOR ROME:
Children of the Eternal City gather in tree-planting ceremonies on one of Rome’s 7 hills, launching a nation-wide conservation program.

FRENCH PARA-TROOPS train for action in Algeria – novices and jump-masters who fall free, reaching a speed of 120 feet per second before pulling the rip-cord.

NIPPON STYLES FOR NIPPERS:
In Allentown, Pa., a novel collection of Fun in the Sun fashions, called from the Land of the Rising Sun, for tots and teenagers.

2d QUINT WEDS:
In Ontario, Cecile Dionne marries Philippe Langlois, becoming the second of the four surviving quintuplets to wed.

PIMLICO FUTURITY:
Six potential winners leave the post in the 35th Pimlico Futurity at Baltimore, a terrific race won by Jewel’s Reward, who becomes the hottest money winning two-year old in turf annals.

IOWA vs NOTRE DAME:
The Hawkeyes outfight the Fighting Irish at South Bend. Notre Dame’s defense holds Iowa on the ground, but the Irish aerial attack boomerangs twice to set up Hawkeye tallies.

SEVEN TOWNS JOIN TO FORM ‘PACIFICA’:
CALIFORNIA – America’s newest city, population 22,000 is born, as seven towns in the San Francisco bay region merge to form “Pacifica” – a hopeful addition to the map of the nation.

IKE IMPROVING:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower attends church just four days after suffering a mild stroke. Accompanied by the First Lady, Ike appears in good health and spirits. A prayer for his complete recovery is offered during the service.

KOREAN WAIFS ARRIVE:
SEATTLE – Ushering in the holiday season, 80 Korean orphans arrive by air, under the sponsorship of Harry Holt, who has played godfather to hundreds of others.

HEMISPHERE SOLIDARITY:
NEW ORLEANS – An heroic sized statue of Simon Bolivar is presented by Venezuela to the South American gateway city, a symbol of cultural and trade ties with our Good Neighbors.

TOY TRAINS:
NEW YORK CITY – Another sign of the season is open house by Lionel where scores of small boys gaze pop-eyed at the elaborate system which does everything but take ‘em aboard as passengers.

HONORABLE DISCHARGE:
GERMANY – Pvt. Teddy, the bear mascot of the 6th Infantry, a gift of the city of Berlin, leaves for the Washington Zoo. He outgrew the regiment, which sorrowfully sees him off with full military honors.

SPEEDBOAT RECORD:
SEATTLE – Streaking across Lake Washington, Hawaii Kai III chalks up a new hydroplane record at 183 m.p.h. over a measured mile, something to shoot at.

NOTRE DAME WINS:
SOUTH BEND – Notre Dame puts a convincing clincher on the season by smothering Southern California 40-12 in dazzling running attack giving a sample of things to come next year.

ARMY-NAVY CLASSIC:
PHILADELPHIA – The game of games sees favored Navy hang a 14-0 beating on the fighting Cadets. Oldham of Navy has a field day, scoring two touchdowns, one a 44 yard runback, and kicks both points.

WORLD AIRPORT OPENS:
New York’s thirty million dollar International Airport building is dedicated, a vast modernistic structure eleven city blocks long, designed to bring airport facilities into the jet age.

FORMOSA HIGHWAY:
Generalissimo and Madame Chiang Kai Shek inspect construction of a new 190 mile highway being hewn out almost entirely by hand labor.

PROTECTION:
In Protection, Kansas, protection from polio is in the air. The town completes 100% Salk shot coverage, and launches hundreds of balloons to alert the nation in the same cause.

GAS MAIN EXPLOSION:
In mid-town Manhattan, a carelessly tossed cigarette ignites gas leaking from an open main. Flames roar out of control on Broadway for an hour!

CALIF SCRAMBLE:
In Los Angeles, 5 calves are turned loose, 10 farm boys after ‘em. The winning buckaroos get to keep the calves, worth $1900 each. What a scramble!

4-H CLUBBERS:
Parade of 4-H champions is a highlight of the 88th International Live Stock Show at Chicago, as the Champion Steer is chosen, a Hereford owned by Mrs. Sue Secondino of West Terre Haute, Ind.

FASHION PARADE:
Holiday hats greeting the festive season are spotlighted in New York. Turbans and caps in luxurious fabrics – gold brocade, black velvet, satin rose petals – millinery a la mode!

‘49ers UPSET GIANTS:
At Yankee Stadium, the San Francisco ‘49ers turn Giant killers, sparked by Joe Perry and Y.A. Tittle, to push the New York team to the brink of elimination in the league race, with a 27-17 win.

MOTOR BOAT SHOW:
In Seattle, boats, boats, boats – everything from do-it-yourself kits and 7 ? foot junior runabouts to $27,000 floating palaces at the National Boat Show.

SATELLITE A BUST:
Official films show the catastrophic launching attempt of America’s first space satellite, at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The giant Vanguard rocket barely lifts off the ground before it falls back and explodes.

BRITISH TRAIN WRECK – In fog-shrouded London, Britain’s worst train wreck in years takes nearly a hundred lives, with many more injured in the collision.

GAS EXPLOSION – The town of Villa Rica, Georgia is virtually razed by a disastrous gas explosion. 12 are killed outright by the blast, which hit with A-bomb impact.

DUTCH AQUARIUM – The Amsterdam Aquarium, one of the world’s most noted, celebrate its 75th Anniversary with a showing of some of its finest finny inmates.

JET-COPTER – Holland proudly displays a new ram-jet helicopter. Tiny jets in the rotor tips give simplified construction an amazing maneuverability to the fiery whirlybird.

NEW AIR FORCE THEME:
The Air Force gets a new theme song, a stirring refrain presented to the nation by top-flight service music-makers.

NOTRE DAME BEATS S.M.U.:
At Dallas, the Fighting Irish go beserk against Southern Methodist in a wild scoring spree that at one point sees the Irish tally four times within 9 minutes! Final score, 54-21.

PHILADELPHIA HIGH SCHOOL GRID CHAMPS:
At Franklin Field, LaSalle meets Roxborough in the annual joust off Philadelphia’s high-school football championship. An exciting game as LaSalle wins the big one, 19-6.

NEW YORK SUBWAY STRIKE:
A strike of subway motormen almost paralyzes New York City with the Christmas rush nearing its peak. With subway service drastically cut, strap-hangers turn to other transport, overloading buses, trains and highways.

XMAS SEALS – In Washington, D.C., the First Lady helps a traditional good cause get under way. Mrs. Eisenhower makes the first purchase of Christmas Seals.

PARIS POOCHES – Parisian pooches, blue-bloods everyone on parade for the camera is as stylish a display of doggery as has come along in quite a while. Chic canines.

INDONESIA CRISIS – New crisis looms in Asia, as Indonesia contests Dutch right to rule in New Guinea, both in the United Nations and with economic warfare.

LIVING DOLLS – In Santa’s Village, California, a doll fashion show features living dolls paired off with the playtoys, each dresses identically, a new trend for Xmas.

RAMS BLAST PACKERS – At Los Angeles, the Rams blast the Green Bay Packers 42-17, sparked by the aerial offensive of Norm Van Brocklin who connects for four touchdown passes!

HEISMAN AWARD – In New York, the Heisman Trophy, most prized award in collegiate football, is presented to Texas A & M’s All-American John Crow.

FLYING SKIERS – In the Bavarian Alps, airmen do their flying close to the ground in competition for the U.S. Air Force Ski Championships.

IKE RALLIES NATO:
President Eisenhower becomes the first U.S. President to visit Paris since 1919 as he arrives for the NATO conference of heads of state. He and Prime Minister MacMillan set the tone of the parley as they receive a warm welcome from Paris.

USIA IN GREECE BOMBED:
ATHENS – Time bombs, believed planned by Cypriote fanatics, demolishes the United States Information Agency, while two more bombs explode at a nearby U.S. Air Force base.

LUFTWAFFE GETS BASES:
GERMANY – Germany’s Defense Minister Strauss receives four U.S. airfields on behalf of the Luftwaffe, their first post-war bases as NATO units.

XMAS ON WATER SKIS:
FLORIDA – In this sunny land, Santa arrives on water skis, and if you judge by the curvaceous reception committee, there must be something to Santa’s job – in Florida, that is.

SPORTS:
TOKLE SKI MEET – At Bear Mountain, the memory of Torger Tokle is fresh, as veterans get their winter ski legs in the Memorial Meet. Art Tokle upholds the family name with the longest jump.

RAMS BEAT COLTS – Los Angeles – the Baltimore Colts go into the game with championship hopes still alive, but Van Brocklin’s sensational passing cuts hope short, as the L.A. Rams win 37-21.

LIONS SMOTHER BEARS – Chicago – Held scoreless for half the game, the Detroit Lions claw their way into contention. Spectacular passing by Tobin Rote and driving play by Cassady wins 21-13, and earns the Lions a play.
