BRAVES WIN WORLD SERIES:
NEW YORK – In a dramatic finale to a dramatic series, the battling Braves of Milwaukee, behind the superb pitching of Lou Burdette, trounce the incumbent champions, the N.Y. Yankees, by a score of 5-0. Burdette’s third World Series victory gives the Braves their first world’s championship.

ROYAL VISIT QUEEN ELIZABETH HAILED IN U.S.:
WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – Queen Elizabeth arrives by plane from Canada, to begin an historic 6-day visit in this country. With Prince Philip, a gracious and smiling monarch motors to historic Jamestown for the 350th anniversary of the first British settlement in the new world. Later, she flies to Washington for a state visit. President Eisenhower welcomes her at the airport and then drives with her through cheering throngs to the White House.

WORLD OF SPORTS

RUSSIAN RUNNER SETS NEW MARK:
ROME – In Italy’s new Olympic Stadium, site of the 1960 games, Vladimir Kuts of Russia sets a shattering pace to lap the field and win the grueling 5,000 meter event in world record time.

LIONS EDGE RAMS IN FOOTBALL:
DETROIT – Cashing in on six intercepted passes, the Detroit Lions win their first home game, edging the Los Angeles pro Rams in a thriller before 56,000 fans. Bobby Layne’s 25-yard field goal breaks the deadlock and the Rams win, 10-7.

NEW YORK HAILS QUEEN:
New York gives Queen Elizabeth the biggest reception of her American visit. From her ferry ride across the harbor through the tickertape parade up the “canyon of heroes” to her appearance at the United Nations, the royal visitor receives the biggest celebrity reception since General MacArthur’s return.

FOOTBALL

ILLINOIS v. MINNESOTA:
Before nearly 70,000 home fans, Illinois’ Bob Mitchell, hospitalized earlier in the week, stages an amazing display of virtuoso running to spark a smashing 34-13 upset of Minnesota.

MARYLAND v. NORTH CAROLINA:
The non-athletic highlight of the game – the presence of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in the stands, the first football game ever seen by the British monarch is a thriller all the way as the Terps thrash the Tarheels, 21-7.

‘MOON’S’ CARRIER ROCKETS 109 MILES:
At Cape Canaveral, Fla., a Viking rocket, basic unit of the three-stage rocket that will carry America’s space satellite aloft, reaches 109 miles in a test firing.

FOUR-FOR-ONE JET REFUELLING:
Off the California coast, the Navy scores an aviation first. The huge Tradewind flying-boat refuels four jet fighters simultaneously, biggest flying gas station yet.

NEW AGA KHAN INSTALLED:
In Tanganyika, members of the Ismaili Muslim sect install their new spiritual leader in elaborate ceremonies. Aga Khan IV is grandson of the late world-famed Aga.

“MY MAN GODFREY” PREMIERE AIDS MOVIE JUBILEE:
One of the most glittering events in Hollywood’s Golden Jubilee celebration is the celebrity-studed premiere of “My Man Godfrey,” U-I’s hilarious new screen comedy.

PRIME MINISTER MACMILLAN of Britain, at the end of 3 days’ talks with the President, in Washington, D.C., tells of the NATO pooling of skills and resources.

NEW VATICAN RADIO, one of the most powerful on earth, is inaugurated 12 miles from St. Peter’s. Pop Pius puts the station in operation and broadcasts a plea for peace.

FIRST “ATOMS FOR PEACE” AWARD is presented by Ike to Niels Bohr, a living legend in the world of science for his pioneering research in nuclear physics.

LEATHER FOR THE WEATHER:

MACKINAC SPAN OPEN TO TRAFFIC:
The bridge they said couldn’t be built, the titanic Mackinac Bridge linking Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas is opened to traffic. Built at $100,000,000 cost, it boasts the world’s longest single suspension span.
