Released from exile by the British, Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus arrives in Athens, where he receives a hero’s welcome for his leadership of Cyprus’ campaign for independence.

FIREWORKS ON THE HUDSON fill New York’s skies with fiery splendor. The most spectacular display in decades celebrates the World Trade Fair.

“PINWHEEL” COPTER:
In California, a 170 pound helicopter, strapped to the pilot’s back, is demonstrated for Naval observers.

CIRCUS AT BELLEVUE:
For the 49th year, the circus comes to entertain youngsters at New York’s Bellevue Hospital – clowns, elephants and all.

TEETER-TOTTER MARATHON is a spring fever manifestation at the College of the Pacific, where two students see-saw their way to a world’s record.

SPORTS:

STANLEY CUP – Hockey’s top prize, is won by Montreal’s Canadiens in a hard fought battle with the Boston Bruins. Series score, 3-1.

FRENCH STOCK CARS – Dirt track racing with a French accent proves as thrilling, and a lot more devil-may-care than the U.S. variety.

‘TEEN WATER SKI CHAMPS – At Cypress Gardens, a 12 year old boy and 10 year old girl stage an amazing show at high speed on water skis.

DULLES REPLIES TO RED THREATS:
NEW YORK – Declaring that “collective measures are here to stay,” John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State, tells gathering of newspaper executives that the free world will not be intimidated by threats emenating from the Kremlin.

WORLD NEWS IN BRIEF:
PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND – “Mayflower II” turns her prow towards a new and vastly different world than that found by the pilgrims who sailed aboard the first Mayflower 137 years ago.

CALIFORNIA – World’s smallest (and most dangerous airport). Small plane takes off, and then lands again (after one near mishap) on top of a speeding station wagon. Luckily the car rides smoothly.

JORDAN – 22 year old King Hussein, storm center in a three-way fight for his vital Arab nation, tries to retain control of his country during series of Cabinet crisis and military resignations.

VANCOUVER – Zoo goes to school! Stanley Park Zoo curator bringer some new and terrifying animals and snakes of school classroom, but after a few qualms, the youngsters learn natural history first – hand.

NEW CHIC COIFFURES:
PARIS – Here’s a new look in hair styles, the latest creations of leading French designers. All with fancy names, the new hair-dos ought to create quite a stir in fashion circles the world around.

“BOLD-RULER” WINS PREVIEW:
JAMAICA, LONG ISLAND – “Bold Ruler,” odds-on favorite to win the Wood Memorial classic, beats off a thrilling stretch drive by “Gallant Man” to clinch the victory and become the horse to beat the Kentucky Derby.

JORDAN CRISIS:
Events move rapidly in the crisis that shakes the tiny Kingdom of Jordan. King Hussein denounces Red influences imposes martial law, and receives the homage of Bedouin chieftains, as in Washington, President Eisenhower declares the autonomy of Jordan vital to world peace, while the U.S. 6th Fleet proceeds to the area.

OLYMPIAN HONEYMOONERS:
America’s Harold Connelly, Olympic hammer throwing champion, and Mrs. Connelly, the former Olga Fikitova – Czech discus gold medalist, arrive in New York from behind the Iron Curtain.

WATER BROOM:
A garden hose attachment invented by 80 year old Clarence Fassett of Stockton, California, rakes the lawn clean and even washes a car in quick-time, with a controlled jet-spray of water.

HARDWARE HATS:
Bizarre bonnets that testify to a touch of Spring fever in San Francisco, where employees let their imagination run riot to produce some merry millinery out of their utilitarian stock in trade.

JAPANESE FASHIONS:
Western tastes are unveiled in New York – the Occidental premiere of a striking style line inspired by Nipponese history and folk-lore, from a new culture center – Tokyo.

TEENAGE TELEPHONE CO.:
In El Cerito, Cal. with 28 subscribers and 2 exchanges – built and operated on their own by 5 young businessman-engineers, testifies to youthful industry and enterprise.

CHIMP CIRCUS:
Starring the chimpanzee champs of the Hamburg circus in hilarious act rolls ‘em in the aisles.

POLIO RODEO:
Protection, Kansas, headlines the completion of a 100% campaign of anti-polio vaccinations with a gala rodeo in fine Old Western style – celebrating their foresight with a bit of looking backwards.

HUSSEIN TIGHTENS GRIP ON JORDAN:
Mass anti-government demonstrations in Jordan are sternly repressed by police before mobs can form as King Hussein takes further measures to secure his threatened regime. With strict curfew imposed, he visits Arabia’s King Saud a staunch anti-Communist ally, to plan his course.

TEXAS FLOODS:
In the wake of seven years of drought, a two week siege of tornadoes, thunderstorms and floods batters Texas and the Southwest. At least 17 are known dead, thousands homeless, while damages reach to untotaled millions – one of the worst disasters in Texas’ history.

BALD HEADED WOMAN:
Mrs. Pat Smith of San Francisco sheds her crowning glory for money and publicity – for a new movie, and publicity she hopes will advance her acting career.

FIRST BABY GORILLA ever born in captivity is Colo – born in Columbus Ohio’s Municipal Zoo – but raised by the Superintendent’s wife. Colo’s dad hardly recognizes her in bonnet and dimity baby dress.

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK for the nation is opened on the steps of the nation’s capital by Vice-President Nixon and Florida’s Sen. Smathers – who ring a bell forged from chains formerly used in mental institutions.

FAMILY FASHIONS – Mom, Pop, and the kids go for sports in look-alike fashion – gay colorful outfits designed for the entire family, and fit for any kind of outdoor fun. True match-mates.

SPORTS

SAILING SEASON opens in the Netherlands, and twenty racing sloops get the season underway at Utrecht. These Flying Dutchmen are off to a flying start as they clip along before a spanking breeze under sunny skies.

DRAKE RELAYS at Des Moines are highlighted by a series of thriller-diller track contests. 11 meet records are shattered with spectacular performances by Olympic sprint star Bobby Morrow, Wilt “the Stilt” Chamberlain of basketball fame, and many other sports stars.

2 weeks of political turmoil seems ended, as Jordan marks the end of the mouth-long religious observances of Ramadan, but King Hussein faces renewed intrigue by his foes.

SPORTS

A.A.U. GYMNASTS vie for the national championships at the U. of Chicago Field-House, Dazzling performances on trampoline, high-bar, and other exacting events add up to a fine show.

BRITISH SOCCER FINALS draw 100,000 to Wembley Stadium, for the top event in Britain’s most popular sport. A hard-fought fast-paced match that keeps the crowd in an uproar till the final minute.

At Edwards Air Force Base, Cal., the Air Force shows its newest experimental plane, a vertical take-off jet that never touches the ground. It takes off and lands from a tilting platform, gentle as a feather – but boasts delta-wing performance when airborne.

IKE GREETS DIEM:
Vietnam’s President Ngo Oinh Diem of Vietnam is greeted by President Eisenhower at the airport – a rare honor – as the Asian anti-Communist leader arrives for a 4 day visit of state.

AUSTRIAN ELECTIONS:
All Austria goes to the polls to elect the country’s 3rd post-war President. Dr. Adolf Schaerf is elected after a campaign of politeness – the sole issue, should the President be a politician?

SWISS GUARDS:
In the Vatican, 28 new members of the Swiss Guards, for centuries protectors of the Pope – are sworn in with traditional ceremony, in the presence of high Church dignitaries.

WATCH FASHIONS, shown in Switzerland’s Trade Fair – featuring stunning bracelets and rings with minuscule but precise timepieces concealed in them, as well as men’s watches with built-in flashlights and parking timers.

HYDROPLANE OUTING:
The unlimited hydroplanes, big fellows of boat racing, have their first outing of the year on Lake Chelan. Slo-Mo-Shun V. Shanty I, and other famous names compete in the Apple-Cup-Race. The winner, Maverick, after a torrid speed battle.

MOTORBIKE HILL-CLIMG:
The mechanized bronco-busters battle the law of gravity on a new, near-vertical course outside Lewiston, Idaho, 35 daredevils tackle the hill, but it’s still mountain-goat country.

CHILD AMBASSADOR – In San Francisco, the 11-year-old boy winner of a contest in international relations is greeted by the Pakistan Consul General on eve of trip to Far East as goodwill ambassador.

DIEM IS HAILED:
New York stages its traditional Broadway parade of welcome for the Vietnam president who, with U.S. aid, has proved one of communism’s greatest foes in southeast Asia.

COTY IN ITALY – The French President, Rene Coty, first chief of state from France to visit Italy since World War II, gets a royal reception in Rome during tour of famous landmarks.

MRS. AMERICA – In Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., attractive wife of Air Force officer and mother of four children, Mrs. Linwood Findley of Washington, D.C., wins coveted title from field of charming housefraus.

JET-AGE MONKEYSHINES:
ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Zoo’s 31st Chimpanzee Show is a mirth-ful, tuneful, hilarious parade of hijinks by the talented stars of the chimp family. As “Space Cadets” and ‘Rock ‘N Roll” musicians, the simian stars will delight the eyes and ears.

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY RODEO:
LOS BANOS, CALIF. – Preceded by a colorful float parade put on by the city’s youngsters, the 50th anniversary rodeo provides action and suspense right from the start. A gala show with a smash ending!

MANORVILLE, N.Y. – A desperate race with death by volunteer workers ends in amazing and heart warming triumph as 7 year old Benny Hooper is reached at the bottom of a 21 foot well, moments before a sand-slide closes the rescue shaft. A 24 hour ordeal with a joyous ending.

ARMED FORCES DAY PARAD:
New York joins the nation in hailing Armed Forces today, with a giant parade down 5th Avenue, showcasing our defense might, from infantry to guided missiles.

OKLAHOMA FLOODS:
The Cimarron River goes on its worst rampage in history, adding to the woes of the disaster-stricken Southwest. From Kansas through the Panhandle floods and tornadoes take a costly, bitter toll.

NEW FRENCH JETS:
France proudly displays its newest aircraft – ranging from sleek jets and helicopters to radically designed ram-jet and rocket craft, a glimpse of the future in today’s skies.

BOLD RULER WINS PREAKNESS:
Bold Ruler, after a letdown in the Derby, redeems his claim to turf greatness with a brilliant victory in the 81st running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, beating Iron Liege by 2 lengths.

JUNIOR RODEO:
